The hoard contained pendants and beads made of shells of marine clam Spondylus gaederopus and scaphopod Antalis vulgaris. The paper analyses the context and use wear of the objects in the hoard. The results form a basis for: the reconstruction of the role of some of the items and the ways in which they were worn; the premise that the dynam- ics and mechanisms of acquisition of ornaments made of the two Mediterranean mollusc species could have differed; and the identification of a cross-cultural pattern of deposition of ornament hoards. Depo vsebuje obeske in jagode, iz- delane iz lupin morskih ∏koljk vrste Spondylus gaederopus in pol∫kov vrste Antalis vulgaris. V ≠lanku analiziramo kontekste in sledove uporabe teh izdelkov. Rezultati nam nudijo osnovo za: rekonstruk- cijo vloge nekaterih izdelkov in na≠inov no∏enja nakita; premiso o razli≠nih dinamikah in mehaniz- mih pridobivanja okrasov iz dveh sredozemskih vrst mehku∫cev; in za prepoznavanje medkulturnih vzorcev odlaganja zakladnih najdb z nakitom. -

In an initiative to help further our understanding, invertebrate surveys over the past seven years have now revealed more than 500 species, many of which are endemic. This is an essential reference guide to these species. Illustrated with hundreds of representative photographs, it includes brief narratives on the biology and ecology of the major taxonomic groups and characteristic features of common species. It is primarily aimed at scientifi c observers, and is intended to be used as both a training tool prior to deployment at-sea, and for use in making accurate identifi cations of invertebrate by catch when operating in the HIMI region. Many of the featured organisms are also found throughout the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, the guide therefore having national appeal. Cottage Grove, Minnesota 55016 3Museum of Northern Arizona Research Associate Flagstaff, Arizona 4Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum Vernal, Utah 5Northern Arizona University Flagstaff, Arizona Introduction As impressive as the Grand Canyon is to any observer from the rim, the river, or even from space, these cliffs and slopes are much more than an array of colors above the serpentine majesty of the Colorado River. The erosive forces of the Colorado River and feeder streams took millions of years to carve more than 290 million years of Paleozoic Era rocks. These exposures of Paleozoic Era sediments constitute 85% of the almost 5,000 km2 (1,903 mi2) of the Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) and reveal important chronologic information on marine paleoecologies of the past. This expanse of both spatial and temporal coverage is unrivaled anywhere else on our planet. While many visitors stand on the rim and peer down into the abyss of the carved canyon depths, few realize that they are also staring at the history of life from almost 520 million years ago (Ma) where the Paleozoic rocks cover the great unconformity (Karlstrom et al. 2018) to 270 Ma at the top (Sorauf and Billingsley 1991). The Paleozoic rocks visible from the South Rim Visitors Center, are mostly from marine and some fluvial sediment deposits (Figure 5-1). -

Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 35.1: 71–94. Abstract Living scaphopods from the Valencian coast (E Spain) and description of Antalis caprottii n. sp. (Dentaliidae).— This paper reports on eight scaphopod species found at 128 sampling stations near the coast of Valencia (Spain) during the campaigns of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE) 2005, 2006 and 2008. Samples depos- ited in several Valencian institutions and private collections are also described. The identified species belong to four families: Dentaliidae (Antalis dentalis, A. inaequicostata, A. novemcostata, A. vulgaris, and A. caprottii n. sp., a new species described from material found on the coasts of the province of Castellón), Fustiariidae (Fustiaria rubescens), Entalinidae (Entalina tetragona) and Gadilidae (Dischides politus). We describe the characteristics and conchiological variations for each species and give geographic distribution maps on the Valencian coast for each species. INCISED DENTALIUM SHELL BEADS IN THE PLATEAU CULTURE AREA Roderick Sprague Whole dentalium and segments of dentalium shell have been used Her study of the archaeological occurrence of marine-shell as beads in the Northwest Coast and interior Plateau culture areas beads in the Fort Rock Basin within the Oregon portion of both prehistorically and ethnographically. Incised whole shells, the Great Basin revealed almost 200 shell beads of which and no more than five known examples of incised segments, have over half were olivella but only four were dentalium been recovered from the Plateau, limited to archaeological contexts. (Largaespada 2006: 19). None of the dentalium was incised. A review of the reported incising clearly shows the use of design Other dentalium in the Great Basin bordering on the Plateau elements typical of the Plateau Culture Area as often also used on are rare with Bonnichsen (1964:32) the only published bone, antler, wood, and historic copper in addition to dentalium.
