Yet scientists have recognized a set of common characteristics shared by all animals, including sponges, jellyfish, sea urchins, and humans. The kingdom Animalia is a group of multicellular Eukarya. Animal evolution began in the ocean over 600 million years ago, with tiny creatures that probably do not resemble any living organism today. Since then, animals have evolved into a highly diverse kingdom. Although over one million currently living species of animals have been identified, scientists are [1] continually discovering more species. The number of described living animal species is estimated to be about 1.4 million, and there may be as many as 6.8 million. Understanding and classifying the variety of living species helps us to better understand how to conserve and benefit from this diversity. The animal classification system characterizes animals based on their anatomy, features of embryological development, and genetic makeup. -

The hoard contained pendants and beads made of shells of marine clam Spondylus gaederopus and scaphopod Antalis vulgaris. The paper analyses the context and use wear of the objects in the hoard. The results form a basis for: the reconstruction of the role of some of the items and the ways in which they were worn; the premise that the dynam- ics and mechanisms of acquisition of ornaments made of the two Mediterranean mollusc species could have differed; and the identification of a cross-cultural pattern of deposition of ornament hoards. In an initiative to help further our understanding, invertebrate surveys over the past seven years have now revealed more than 500 species, many of which are endemic. This is an essential reference guide to these species. Illustrated with hundreds of representative photographs, it includes brief narratives on the biology and ecology of the major taxonomic groups and characteristic features of common species. It is primarily aimed at scientifi c observers, and is intended to be used as both a training tool prior to deployment at-sea, and for use in making accurate identifi cations of invertebrate by catch when operating in the HIMI region. Many of the featured organisms are also found throughout the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, the guide therefore having national appeal. We present a revision of the species of Polyschides from Brazil, with the description of a new species. Polyschides tetraschistus (Watson, 1879) and P. portoricensis (Henderson, 1920) were confirmed for Brazilian waters, with the known geographic distribution of the latter extended southward to the state of Rio de Janeiro (21ºS). Comparisons of shell morphometrics show that: (1) P. xavante n. sp. is significantly smaller and less arched than P. tetraschistus and P. portoricensis; (2) the maximum diameter, height and width of the anterior aperture, and the height and width of the apical aperture were also significantly smaller in P. xavante; (3) the maximum diameter in P. xavante n. sp. and P. tetraschistus is located closer to the aperture than in P. portoricensis. A Dis- criminant Function Analysis based on seven shell morphometric variables (length, maximum diam- eter, length to maximum diameter ratio, anterior aperture width, anterior aperture height to anterior aperture width ratio, maximum diameter to posterior aperture width and distance of point of maxi- mum curvature from the apex to length ratio) were 100% efficient in discriminating among the three species.
