Ich setze mich in die Eingangshalle neben die Tür eines Büroraums. Niemand reagirt, als ich anklopfe. Ich schaue hinein: leer. Setze mich in einen von zwei Stühlen, auf dem Tisch neben mir liegen aufgefächert ein paar Broschüren, die über das Studium am Europakolleg und die Zu- sammensetzung der Studierenden informieren: welches Durch- schnittsalter, Herkunft, Zahlen, Anteil weiblicher und männlicher Stu- dierender, Fremdsprachenkenntnisse. Durchschnittlich drei Fremd- sprachen, manche können sieben! Ich blättere die Broschüre einmal durch, mir wird etwas mulmig. Noch habe ich niemanden gesehen, es ist auch vollkommen leise, vielleicht essen gerade alle? Ich schaue mich noch mal um: Mein Name steht auf einem Umschlag, der zur Hälfte hinter einer Fensterscheibe klemmt. Daneben andere Umschlä- ge mit den Namen von Professoren, die wohl auch heute anreisen. Ich fahre in dem winzigen Fahrstuhl nach oben und beziehe mein Zimmer. Vor einem der großen Fenster weht die Flagge des Europakollegs. Bei jedem Windstoß schlägt sie lärmend an die Fahnenstange. Zwei akku- rat blauweißkariert bezogene Betten, zwei Schränke, zwei Schreibti- sche, ein Sessel. Ich bin da. Bin ich da? Habe meinen Koffer ausgepackt und stehe nun vor dem blassweißen Hauptgebäude des Europakollegs nur ein paar Gehminuten von mei- ner Unterkunft entfernt. Große Fenster, Fahnen an kurzen Stangen, gegenüber einige Bäume auf einem kleinen Platz und eine Gracht, an deren anderem Ufer ein elegantes Stadthaus aus altem Backstein. Da- neben ein Luxushotel, wie es scheint. Der Marktplatz im Zentrum der Altstadt liegt gleich um die Ecke, anstelle von Autogeräuschen höre ich Hufgeklapper aus der engen Straße dorthin. Die erste Tür gleitet aus- einander, ich trete in einen kleinen Vorraum. Auch dort eine Europa- flagge auf einem Ständer. Hinter einer Glaswand das Foyer mit dunk- len Tischen und Ledersesseln. Auch dort ist niemand zu sehen. Am Empfang sitzt niemand, für die zweite Tür braucht man wohl einen Zugangscode ± eine Chipkarte. Kein Zutritt zum »Feld« also für den Moment. Ich gehe wieder nach draußen. Die Glocken des Belforts schlagen minutenlang die ¾Ode an die Freude½. Europa in meinen Oh- ren, bevor ich überhaupt mit jemandem gesprochen habe.1 1 Feldtagebuch (FTB) vom 2. Februar 2004. Im Foyer Europa, Europäische Union, Europäisierung ± drei allgegenwärtige Begriffe, die sich auf ein politisches und kulturelles Projekt und ein Konstrukt ohne Vorbild beziehen. Auch wenn EUropa1 seit Beginn der wirtschaftlichen Integration in den 1950er Jahren immer größeren Raum im Alltag von Europäerinnen und Europäern einnimmt, so be- steht weder bei diesen noch bei den politischen Eliten Einigkeit darü- ber, was EUropa ist und sein soll. Die Meinungen über die anzustre- bende äußere Form und innere Struktur EUropas gehen auseinander; heutige (und zukünftige) Mitgliedsstaaten vertreten unterschiedliche Sichtweisen zur optimalen Größe, dem institutionellen Gefüge oder der politischen »Bestimmung« der EU. Die Referenden über einen EUro- päischen Verfassungsvertrag im Jahr 2005 und die sich nach wie vor als schwierig erweisende innereuropäische Zusammenarbeit werfen ein Licht darauf, dass die nationalen und europäischen politischen Eli- ten und ein Großteil der Bevölkerung keine gemeinsame Vorstellung von der Zukunft der EU und Europas teilen. In Statistiken, Meinungsumfragen und wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wird erhoben, wie »europäisiert« die europäische Bevölkerung ist. Eu- ropäisierung meint dabei die alltägliche Bezugnahme auf Europa, die 1 Mit EUropa ist der geographische Teil Europas gemeint, der gegenwärtig Teil der Europäischen Union ist oder in Beitrittsverhandlungen steht bzw. in Kürze beitreten wird. Diese Schreibweise soll auf ein problemati- sches Verhältnis und die je nach Perspektive gegebene Unterscheid- barkeit von »EU« und »Europa« hinweisen. Die oftmals implizit vorge- nommene Gleichsetzung der beiden Kategorien führe ich hier nicht fort, sondern betone vielmehr ihren sozialer und kulturellen Konstruktions- charakter. 9 EUROPA BACKSTAGE Präsenz der EU im Mediendiskurs der nationalen Öffentlichkeiten ± und auch die Entstehung einer gemeinsamen öffentlichen Sphäre, in der über EUropa berichtet und damit zugleich zur Konstruktion Euro- pas beigetragen wird (vgl. Delhey 2004, Hall 2003, Johler 1999). Borneman und Fowler haben die EU als ein zirkulares Phänomen be- zeichnet ± sie manifestiert sich in den vielfältigen Europäisierungsdis- kursen und wird zugleich erst durch diese hervorgebracht: »[T]his circularity ± the EU as both cause and effect of itself ± begs the funda- mental question of what it in fact is.« (Borneman/Fowler 1997: 488, vgl. konträr dazu Bach 2000) Die Akteure in den Europäischen Institu- tionen arbeiten mit daran, »sich die europäische Idee anzueignen, gleichsam als wollten sie eine Deckungsgleichheit mit dem Begriff Eu- ropa und allen damit verbundenen Interpretationen erreichen.     Artistic Explorations in Cultural Memory Research workshop Faculty of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University Scheltema, Leiden, 3-4 November 2006 A Report by dr. Mariangela Lavanga Summary Artistic Explorations in Cultural Memory was a very intensive workshop on the interdependences and interrelations between contemporary creativity and cultural heritage, highlighting emblematic cases of confluence, interaction and mutual reinforcement between them. It explored the mechanisms that can be used to remember, the ways contemporary creativity uses to de-freeze and re-discover memories, to shape and alter cultural memory. The workshop, conceived and conveyed by dr. Dragan Klaic, sought to abridge the gap and compensate for a certain lack of mutual understanding between the professionals engaged in the contemporary creativity and those in the cultural heritage. This potential understanding and collaboration are to be anchored in the discovery and re-construction of a cultural memory that fuses memory sites and memory narratives (Klaic, 2005)1. Cultural heritage – in its material and immaterial forms - does not only need preservation and conservation, it also needs a process of de-freezing (Gottfried Wagner) and re- contextualization which only contemporary creativity could trigger. 1. Introduction Through the centuries and also today cultural heritage has being irrevocably lost; this loss is caused by nature- and time-generated devastation as well as human deeds and neglect. Furthermore, in a context of increasing globalisation and commodification, the immaterial cultural heritage is especially vulnerable and at risk. Immaterial heritage concerns skills and cultural artefacts sustained in memory and thus is prone to fall out of use and disappear through collective amnesia (Klaic, 2005)2.
