The mighty trees look like sturdy towers. Dad, I’m starving to death and exhausted. Look! My hurt feet are bleeding. I’m scared of snakes, tigers, and foxes. Dad, are we going to reach our destination? Daughter, there is no place in this world that only is pleasant and easy. Our paths are not carpeted with beautiful flowers. But you need to carry on, although it breaks your heart into pieces. I see a thorn punctured your soft skin. Your blood is a ruby dangling on a blade of grass near the river. Your tears, shed on green bushes, like diamond on emerald, shine brightest. For humanity, do not retreat from being brave and suffering. Be patient and thoughtful. She closely follows Her projects and visits people in the project areas. 11 พระราชกรณียกิจที่ทรงสืบสาน Continuing the Legacy 12 ลัญลักษณ์อุณาโลมแดง มีความหมายถึง สิริมงคล สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ทั้งในศาสนาพราหมณ์และพระพุทธศาสนา รวมทั้งองค์พระมหากษัตริย์เจ้า เป็นเครื่องยึดเหนี่ยวทางจิตใจ เป็นธงชัยของผู้เสี่ยงชีวิตเข้าปฏิบัติหน้าที่ตามอุดมการณ์ของกาชาดสากลในวิกฤตการณ์ ร.ศ.๑๑๒ สภากาชาดไทย เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๖ ได้เกิดกรณีพิพาทระหว่างประเทศสยามกับประเทศฝรั่งเศส เรื่องดินแดน ฝั่งซ้ายแม่น�้าโขง ซึ่งส่งผลให้ทหารบาดเจ็บล้มตายมาก แต่ไม่มีองค์กรการกุศลที่ท�าหน้าที่ช่วยเหลือ พยาบาลและบรรเทาทุกข์ ดังนั้น ท่านผู้หญิงเปลี่ยน ภาสกรวงศ์ จึงได้ชักชวนสตรีอาสาสมัครขึ้น และ ได้กราบบังคมทูล สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสว่างวัฒนา พระบรมราชเทวี เพื่อขอพระราชทานพระบรมราชา- นุญาต ตั้ง ‘สภาอุณาโลมแดงแห่งชาติสยาม’ เมื่อความทราบฝ่าละอองธุลีพระบาทพระบาทสมเด็จ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มีพระราชกระแสว่า เป็นความคิดอันดีตามแบบอย่างประเทศที่เจริญแล้ว จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระบรมราชานุญาตให้จัดตั้ง สภาอุณาโลมแดง (ต่อมาได้ เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น สภากาชาดไทย) ขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ ๒๖ เมษายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๖ และทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสว่างวัฒนา พระบรมราชเทวี ทรงเป็น สภาชนนี สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าเสาวภา ผ่องศรี พระวรราชเทวี ทรงเป็น สภานายิกา และท่านผู้หญิงเปลี่ยน ภาสกรวงษ์ เป็นเลขานุการิณี 13 The Thai Red Cross Society Siam and France fought the Franco-Siamese War of 1893 to determine who would control the left bank of the Mekong River. There were a lot of casualties but there was no one to care for them. Than Phu Ying Plien Pasakornravongs gathered female volunteers to help care for the casualties and proposed the idea to Queen Savang Vadhana (wife of King Rama V). King Rama V agreed—saying Thailand should have a charitable organiza- tion to treat war casualties, as developed countries did at that time. The Red Unalom So- ciety of Siam was founded on April 26th, 2436 B.E. under Royal patronage and would later become the Red Cross Society. Queen Savang Vadhana was appointed Sapha Chon- nani (literally Mother of the Council) by King Rama V and Queen Saovabha Phongsri as Sapha Nayika, meaning President of the Red Unalom Society of Siam.
