Metro line 14: accessibility for all

Every station on metro line 14 is accessible for wheelchair users travelling independently, from street level to train. Lifts have been installed in every station facilitating movement around the line for reduced mobility passengers. Furthermore, the new rolling stock currently being rolled out on metro line 14 (MP14 trains) has six priority seats in each carriage (four currently) reserved for priority passengers, and one space to accommodate wheelchair users at the front and rear of the train. 16 A NEW MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE DEPOT

The metro line 14 to Mairie de Saint-Ouen – Région île-de-France extension required a new train maintenance and storage depot to be built to accommodate the new greater capacity, 120-metre-long trains. The metro has been a place of artistic expression pretty much since the first train left the station. From the Art Nouveau canopies designed by architect Hector Guimard through to Kiosque des Noctambules by Jean-Michel Othoniel, the association between Paris’ public transport and art has long been a fount of creativity and innovation, elevating the image of both the metropolitan transit system and the city of Paris whose histories are inextricably linked. The first step of this ambitious and original policy is to give stations a complete makeover: public spaces entirely personalised to create a whole new atmosphere, immersing passengers in another world.

TOBIAS REHBERGER’S ARCH AT PONT CARDINET STATION

This sculpture by German artist Tobias Rehberger will be a permanent beacon at the station entrance with a shape reminiscent of Hector Guimard’s canopies. The commissioners of this piece co-financed with French property developer Emerige were drawn to the arch’s fun, colourful aspect as well as its hidden “binary clock” function.

What sets the installation apart is that it is composed of two parts: the first, on full display to the city, is integrated into the metro station entrance and the ground level of a futuristic building, aimed at passers-by. The second part, inside the station, will be visible to metro line 14 passengers. Only this second part will be unveiled to passengers in December 2020, just in time to mark the metro line extension entering into service. The exterior part will be installed in spring 2021.
