Staindrop 1911

One of the larger Kipling family groups is the descendants of Lionel Kipling, woolcomber of Staindrop, many of whom are now in the USA. See also Staindrop 1911 (Sunderland), Staindrop 1911 (Bradford) and Fishmonger. Most 1911 census entries are in those other notes.

Lionel may have been born in in 1730, the son of John Kipling, yeoman.1

Lionel married Elizabeth Camron at Staindrop in 1747.

Their children included Mary (1749), Joseph (1750), Lionel (1751), Ann (1754), Joseph (1756), Joshua (1758), Jacob (1760; d1764), Dorothy (1761) and Nathan (1762). Elizabeth died giving birth to Nathan.

In 1772, Lionel Kipling married a Jane Greenwell at Staindrop a few weeks before a son, Jacob, was born. He was given the name of his late step-brother.

Marriage Bonds, Durham Diocese District - Record Number: 424868.14 Location: Durham Diocese Church: Marriage Bonds (entire diocese) Denomination: Anglican 30 Sep 1772 Lionel Kipling (weaver, widower), age 36, of Staindrop obtained a licence to marry Jane Greenwell, age 30, of Staindrop, directed to Staindrop Surety: John Shaw, comber, of Staindrop [Note: married 1 Oct at Staindrop.]

1 Some have considered, based on his amended age at death (97, changed from 79, see later), that Lionel might have been born in Staindrop in 1717, in a short gap in the parish registers. In which case, it has been suggested that he could be the son of Charles Kipling and Elizabeth Bell who married there in 1717. Charles was originally from Middleton in , where his ancestors included several Lionels. However, he was a prosperous merchant, so unlikely to have had a woolcombing son, and in any case left only four daughters as co-heirs on his death in 1721.

Baptisms, Teesdale District - Record Number: 828145.0 Location: Staindrop Church: St. Mary the Virgin Denomination: Anglican 18 Oct 1772 Jacob Kipling of Staindrop, son of Lionel & Jane Kipling

Lionel’s age is given as 36, implying that he was born in 1735/6. This accords with an age at death of 79 in 1814, see below, but is inconsistent with a first marriage in 1747. It appears that he may have subtracted some years from his age by 1772, although not as many as was later added on in the burial register

Their other children were Robert (1774)….

…and Ann (1776).

Either Lionel (aged around 50) or his son, aged around 30, served in the Durham militia between 1780 and 1782. Forename Lionel Surname Kipling Corps Durham Company Capt Cathericke Rank Private Reference WO 13/608

D2. David (1793)

In March 1814, Pvt. David Kipling of the 70th Regiment of Foot is recorded as being posted from barracks in Perth, Scotland, to Tilbury Fort. The history of the regiment tells that it spent 1813 suppressing riots in Montrose and guarding prisoners of war at Perth. It was sent to reinforce the garrison in Canada during the Anglo-American War of 1812-1815 and remained there until 1827.

We also find a mention of him in Canada in 1817, in transit from Kingston (where the St Lawrence exits Lake Ontario) to York (now Toronto)3

3 HMS Netley was a 16-gun ship launched as Prince Regent in 1812 for the Provincial Marine on Lake Ontario. She was converted into a schooner in 1813 and renamed Beresford (or General Beresford). She was re-rigged as a brig in 1814 when the Royal Navy took over the Provincial Marine, and renamed Netley, Admiralty policy being not to name vessels after living people, and Niagara in 1838, at which time she served as a base ship. She was broken up in 1843.

It is not yet known who the George Kipling also on the muster roll was (he was probably not a close relation of David however) nor the Ross (?) Kipling on the Canadian muster roll. David later settled at Sodus Ridge, NY (on the south shore of Lake Ontario). He and Elizabeth Mary (Betsey) Thorne/Thern are recorded as having a child Sarah baptised at Niagara Falls in 1825. He most probably ended his period of service in Canada and chose to remain in North America.

E. Jacob (1772)

Interesting that Jacob is described as ‘junior’. This may reflect that Lionel had a previous son Jacob (b 1760, d 1764)

Jane’s fate is unknown. Thomas seems only to be recorded again in old age.

1891. Middlesborough

Thomas probably died in Middlesborough in 1893.

F. Robert (1774)

Robert is a difficult charater to follow. He is likely to be the Robert Kipling aged 80 born Staindrop living at Bolam in 1851 (see ‘Bolam 1911’)

This Robert married an Anne Orton at Bolam in 1800 and was a labourer/husbandman. However, the record below appears to contradict this.

St Mary’s, Barnard Castle, 1811

More confusingly still, a Robert Kipling of Sunderland had married a Hannah Harwood there in 1809 and had a daughter in 1815, when Robert is recorded as being a sailor.

Marriages, Sunderland District - Record Number: 351514.1 Location: Sunderland Church: Holy Trinity Denomination: Anglican 7 Feb 1809 Robert Kipling of this parish married Hannah Harwood of this parish, by banns Witnesses: Nicholas Dowson, Thomas Arlot

And there are birth records which support either (Robert of Sunderland being from a seafaring family - see ‘Monkwearmouth 1911’).
