METROTENERIFE is a Consulting, Engineering and Operation&Maintenance company within the railway infrastructure sector. The firm was constituted in in 2001, as a Public Private Partnership, in order to launch and alternative means of transport in the form of railway lines on the island of Tenerife.

Based on the extensive knowledge accumulated at each stage of a railway transportation project: studies and design, construction management, testing and commissioning, operating and maintenance; the firm provides a variety of consultancy services tailored to its client’s needs.

Currently, METROTENERIFE employs a team of 180 experts and subcontracts a team of 40 professionals. In addition, the company has provided technical assistance to clients located in four continents. The enterprise has its headquarters in Spain and has offices in Ecuador and Peru.

METROTENERIFE is a member of:

Consultancy and Engineering services

METROTENERIFE provides the expertise in engineering and consultancy needed for the development and management of their clients’ transport systems. Moreover, METROTENERIFE has an extensive experience in O&M, which give them the ability to integrate operations and maintenance constraints from the design stage: the key to guaranteeing that a line is functional and maintained in line with budget forecasts throughout its useful life.

1. Planning. We assist government administrations and private companies to make decisions on infrastructure and transportation services: master plans, transport system plans, analysis and management of mobility, technical and economic feasibility studies, assistance with Public-Private Partnerships (privatization, outsourcing, BOT, management contracts), design of operational-maintenance-financial models, concept studies and demand studies.

2. Design. Detailed design and engineering, technical assistance in project management, planning, drafting of the technical and administrative specifications, management of tenders, drafting and revision of technical and functional specifications, development of interfaces, definition of a charging structure, accessibility plan and Rolling-Stock assessment. 3. Construction. Management and technical assistance on site, planning, follow up, building and quality certificates, execution and interfaces controls.

METROTENERIFE has provided consultancy services in planning, design and construction to clients from Europe, Latin America, Africa and Middle East, involving urban and interurban rail transport.

Operation & Maintenance

METROTENERIFE has and extensive experience in O&M, endorsed by the positive results obtained in the different projects it has managed. The firm has been involved in the pre-operation and operation of the following Light Rail Train systems: (Spain), Zaragoza (Spain), Malaga (Spain), Cadiz (Spain), Rabat (Morocco), Jerusalem (Israel) and Cuenca (Ecuador).

Based on this knowledge, the company offers technical assistance services aimed at operators and Transport Authorities:

1. Tests and trials. Drawing up, implementation and follow up of tests (of the systems, interfaces and integration), stress tests, tests on degraded modes of the system, etc.

2. Pre-operational stage. Assessment in Human Resources and Labor Relations, drafting of operational documentation, maintenance plans and tender documents, depot lay-out, theoretical and practical training of staff, deployment of temporary drivers and drivers training.

3. Service simulation. Development, programming and management of the “empty running” tests, service demonstration and validation of procedures.

4. Running and maintenance. Development of the operating program, definition and optimization of the service, management of obsolescence, revision and optimization of the maintenance plan, RAMS studies, financial and operational management, operational benchmarkings, operation of LRT/tramways and conventional trains lines, maintenance of rolling-stock and fixed installations, assistance and training in maintenance management, etc.

I+D+i

Transporting millions of passengers every year has allowed METROTENERIFE to know firsthand the needs of the sector in terms of safety, technology and energy. The engineering team develops innovative solutions that meet the needs of operators worldwide, as well as the creation of safer and more efficient transport systems. Some of the innovations are the following:

1. Speed Monitoring and Control Safety System (SIMOVE). Development, testing and deployment of a system that continuously monitor and control the speed of its vehicles, comparing the position and speed of any railway vehicle with the appropriate speed for any given section of the lane. In case the driver over speed the system warns the driver and if not reduced the system stops the vehicles avoiding the risk of the vehicle overturning on curves due to excessive speed. SIMOVE has a very strong back-office that becomes a powerful tool for the railway operator to monitor aspects such as traffic signal priority, time spent at stops and termini, commercial speed per line section, quality of driving in terms of braking and acceleration consistency, accelerations module to analyse passengers comfort and falling due to jerk, etc. SIMOVE is a key tool in order to detect speeding not detected before and to produce statistics to evaluate driving behaviour.

SIMOVE has been installed in two LRT systems in Spain and recognized as a significant safety system by operators across Europe and Latin America. Moreover, SIMOVE has been highly commended as Project of the Year at Smart Rail Awards 2018, highly commended as Significant Safety Initiative at the Global Light Rail Awards 2017 and Shortlisted at the XV Technological Innovation Award of Talgo Foundation 2015.

2. “VIA-MOVIL” is an integral ticketing system that unifies, by means of the user’s mobile telephone and without the need for a paper ticket, the purchase, validation and ticket control process, and which allows for a direct communication between the transport operator and passengers. VIA-MOVIL enables management of complex ticketing systems in multi-operator environment. 3. Update of the first section of South Train due to the changes in the Tenerife’s Infrastructure Master Plan. This section is 9,20km. long of double track, starting next to the existing modal interchange station at Santa Cruz (bus-tramway-taxi). The detailed design includes: a new rail station next to the modal interchange that reaches 14 meters underground with a level of 5 meters below sea level, 3 underground tunnels, a viaduct and the extension of the docking port located in the vicinity of the oil refinery. The South Train defines a railway platform with 79,55km. of double track that runs parallel to the TF-1 motorway, sharing the same infrastructure corridor. It connects 7 interchange stations, one of these at the Tenerife South International Airport and 2 freight terminals. The design crosses more than 300 ravines and the railway system is designed for a maximum speed of 220 km/h. The expected demand is 16 million passengers per year.

The suburban rail line of Regiotram is a mass transport system for the city of Bogota which connects the neighbouring municipalities. This tram-train system uses a light electric vehicle with dual functionality. The tramway infrastructure is currently equipped with a magnetic ticketing system, in use since the beginning of commercial operation in 2009. The project consists on the migration of the current magnetic ticketing system to a contactless system based on MIFARE DESFIRE for the general card and ULTRALIGHT C for the low cost flexible card. The existing ticketing system in the bus fleet (independent operator) is also magnetic, therefore the migration of both infrastructures, buses and tramways, will proceed simultaneously, unifying the fare system of all the public transport in the island of Tenerife (urban buses, intercity buses and trams).

The bus operator (urban and intercity) has a fleet of 524 buses and the tram operator a fleet of 26 vehicles, with 35.6 and 14 million passengers per year, respectively. Therefore, the fare integration will require multimodal interoperability: transferring, among others.

To execute the project, it was necessary to perform an obsolescence analysis, which is a project that aims to identify market alternatives for the renewals of the systems that no longer offer the functionality required, or whose equipment no longer have spare parts or whose supply has been discontinued. Subsequently, it was necessary to implement the following: a central ticketing management system shared between the tram and bus operators, in addition to the competent Transport Authority. Moreover, the replacement of all the hardware equipment of both means of transport: vending machines, equipment in commercial offices, validators and other embarked equipment on buses and trams, control terminals and central system equipment. The bus operator's positioning system is also included in the contract.

Although the magnetic system will be replaced, operators will continue to use the existing mobile ticketing system (QR code), and therefore the integration of the contactless and mobile ticketing systems must be managed and implemented, so that they are compatible. Additionally, it is necessary to foresee and manage the coexistence between the two technologies: magnetic and contactless for a certain period of time, until the new system is fully available.

The project includes the design, management and execution of information campaigns for users of both modes of transport: buses and tramways.

ten+VAO is an free application for smartphones developed by Metrotenerife that complements the private vehicle and the tram by means of a system of rewards for carpooling users (free parking, free parking space, points exchangeable for a variety of cultural services, among others) which allows a rapid transfer free of charge from the private vehicle to the tram.

The island of Tenerife has become the part of Spain with the second largest number of vehicles per kilometre of road. This system was developed in order to reduce the traffic congestion in the metropolitan area of Tenerife and promote the use of the tramway system, as a part of the firm’s search for more sustainable solutions for the benefit of the environment.

With the aim of increasing the impact of ten+VAO, the system have been included as an additional benefit of the Smartphone application of the tram ticketing system called Ten+. 30% of tram users buy and cancel their tickets using this system and at present there are 116,000 users

The pilot phase of ten+VAO begun in June 2018 and, with duration of three months, achieved a reduction of 75% in the use of private vehicles for ten+VAO users, with the consequent increase in demand for the tram, an average saving of 3, 4674 grams of CO2 for each journey of thirteen kilometres with three users and groups of up to four users in a single vehicle.

SIMOVE is a Speed Monitoring and Control Safety System developed by Metrotenerife to monitor the speed of the vehicles. This safety innovation allows the operator to continuously monitor and control the speed of its vehicles combining GPS reporting and the vehicle’s odometer, to compare the position and speed of any railway vehicle with the appropriate speed for any given section of the line. In case the driver over speed the system warns the driver. In case the speed is not reduced, the system stops the vehicles avoiding the risk of the vehicle overturning on curves due to excessive speed.

VIA-MOVIL is an innovative integral ticketing system that unifies, by means of the user’s mobile telephone and without the need for a paper ticket, the purchase, validation and ticket control process, and which allows for a direct communication between the transport operator and passengers. It is based on users’ own smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android).

Via-Movil makes travelling easier for users by enabling them to purchase tickets wherever they may be and at any time, and by means of a secure payment gateway. The application is also advantageous for the operator, as the virtualisation of the ticketing system does not require actual paper tickets, special equipment or infrastructure (cancelling machines) on board the vehicles; it needs only QR code stickers for ticket validation. It can be deployed in 2-3 months, with low investment and without on-board infrastructure, supplying information in real time and compatible with other kinds of activities unconnected with public transport.

After succeeding the design, development and piloting phase in the tramway infrastructure, the system

was implemented in the bus fleet of the island (sole operator company TITSA), that includes all urban and intercity lines. This action included fare integration between operators, tram and buses.

In December 2015 the system was fully implemented and operational in the LRT and buses of the Tenerife’s island.
