STEFANO Long before the disastrous Battle of Battin the Latin Kingdom ... was beginning to lean more and more upon the military religious orders ... Continually reinforced from Europe by a regular flow of recruits of the very best military type, their efficiency was unimpaired by the adverse Oriental environment, and they remained the only really stable and wholesome elements in the state ... there can be no two opinions as to the entirely devoted and self-sacrificing manner in which they carried out their arduous duties. 1 The great Orders of chivalry, Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic Knights, became as much states within a state, having their own policy ... often dictated by their financial interests and opposed to the most evident needs of the country .... They did not care about this derisory state except in so far as they could occasionally make it serve their ends, involving it in their personal wars for their particular interests. 2 These irreconcilable views of the Military Orders are extreme expressions of two schools of history. To the first have belonged nearly all the historians of the Military Orders, the majority of whom, it should be remembered, were themselves connected with descendant branches of the Order of St. John. To the second has subscribed nearly every historian of the Crusades and the crusader states. The supporters of the first argue that the members of the Military Orders were robust exponents of a worthwhile ideal. While admitting that they were often selfish and disorderly, they believe that their qualities far outweighed their defects. They claim that they made up the back­ bone of a decaying state, arguing that they were largely responsible for its survival over two centuries. In short, they take too uncritical a view of the Military Orders, who, it must be admitted, are not at first sight attractive. The early purity of their ideals was soon corrupted. Overmighty subjects in the Latin East, they shared the vices of all great mediaeval institutions: selfishness, greed and an obsession with litigation. Too often their disputes dissolved into fratricidal violence. K.S.J.-Q 2 473 474 CONCLUSION they expressed knightly ideals in an accentuated form and that their savagery was a concomitant of extreme chivalry. 1 We would argue that it was a product of conditions in Latin Syria, where in the thirteenth century all institutions tended to express themselves in physical violence. The second school of historians maintains that the Orders were entirely selfish and egotistical. Concerned only with self-aggrandise­ ment, they were too short-sighted to look to the true interests of the Holy Land. This view, however, ignores the serious way in which they approached their responsibilities. No one can question the great expenses undergone by the Hospitallers in the care of the sick or by all Orders in the prosecution of war. On campaign and in council we have seen them taking a position that was rational, can often be shown to have been sensible and realistic, was consistent and, while it was unpopular with westerners, was often that held by the Syrian barons themselves. The Orders certainly weakened Latin Syria and their own position by their violent political disputes; but the questions that almost always divided them, relations with the Saracens and the succession to the throne, were important matters to all institutions in the settlement. The Templars were baronial and anti-monarchical, the Hospitallers royalist; but these were both valid viewpoints. It can be reasonably argued that the basic, perhaps unconscious, motives behind these were selfish; but the consistency with which the Templars and Hospitallers held their points of view does suggest that a kind of corporate political philosophy had grown up within each Order. The survival of the Holy Land was after all the reason for their existence. This they knew well. And they also knew how ruthless was public opinion in the West: all too ready to judge them by immediate results. They could not take a line openly opposed to the necessities of the Latin East; it is arguable that they never did so. In fact both views of the Military Orders have oversimplified their history. One is too partisan, the other too critical. Both, and this is where they share a fundamental failing, credit them with more effi­ ciency, more wealth and more power than they actually possessed. Their organisation has been called a 'hierachy of iron'. I But all great institutions in the Middle Ages suffered from inefficiency, incompe­ tence and corruption within their ranks. The Order of St. John was greater than most, and we have shown how, in spite of all the attempts of the Chapter General, the vast international machine was rarely able to function as its creators intended. The Convent in Syria relied upon responsions from Europe that were not often paid in full, while its organisation was too adversely affected by the failings of individual Masters and officers. A study of the Order in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries reveals inherent contradictions. It was highly organised, perhaps over­ organised, but it was inefficient. It was rich in lands and properties and absolved from much secular taxation, but it suffered from a chronic shortage of money. It was a great exempt Order of the Church with wide-ranging privileges from the papacy, but in those states where it was most powerful it was never able to exercise these privileges in full. In Syria it possessed great palatinates in the north, in which it could behave as an independent prince and from which it directed a highly aggressive war against small Muslim neighbours. But in the Holy Land itself, the kingdom of Jerusalem, its estates were never inde­ pendent of the crown and, faced by two great Saracen powers, it sup­ ported a policy of integration into Oriental politics by means of alliances, being suspicious of Crusades that could upset a delicate status quo. Its political influence in the twelfth century has been exaggerated. It achieved power slowly and haphazardly, its rise accompanied by humiliating reverses. Its emergence as one of the few institutions governing the settlement came about by default as others grew weaker in the collapse that followed the Battle of Hattin, while the monarchy passed to an absentee dynasty in the West. We can find no constitutional basis for the position held by the Masters in the government of the settlement. At this very moment, moreover, the Order of St. John became dependent upon supplies from Europe whose transhipment could be hindered by the actions of developing national governments. Its international organisation was a creation I Grousset, croisades1 foe. cit. CONCLUSION of the twelfth century that was already out of date in political terms by the thirteenth. If historians have exaggerated the Order's strength, they have under­ emphasised its real historical importance. Not only was it one of the most important institutions in the Latin East, but its officers were great men in many western states. It was one of the first internationally organised exempt Orders of the Church. Its ideal of the care of the sick poor set a standard that was followed by many in the later Middle Ages. It proclaimed, perhaps most characteristically, the crusading ideal: that mixture of charity and pugnacity that had so profound an influence on all western thought in the High Middle Ages. It was an instrument of the popes in the centuries of their political pre-eminence, while in its internal history it reflected the changing social and economic structure of Europe: the rise of the knightly class, but also the emer­ gence of a capitalist monetary economy. It was, however, only with its move to Rhodes that its headquarters became independent of secular control; and this new independence naturally changed its character. But if in its first centuries its central organisation was still answerable to a lay government, never again were its members to be able to fulfil their vocations in the truest sense, for they were never able to return to that Promised Land whose welfare had been the reason for the Order's existence. Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away. APPENDIX THE POSSESSIONS OF THE ORDER OF ST. JOHN IN THE LEV ANT IN the documents of the Order of St. John, historians have an unparalleled source for the possessions of an important institution in the Latin East. 1 It is now possible to map the estates of the Hospital, for distinguished topo­ graphical works in the last seventy years have identified most of the places. First and most important of these is the map of the kingdom of Jerusalem composed by Prawer and Benvenisti. I have consulted both these scholars and their advice and help has been of great value. 2 I have also used the studies of Beyer, Rohricht, Abel, Deschamps and Dussaud and an earlier map of Palestine by Johns. 3 The northern crusader colonies have not yet received such treatment. Rohricht's articles were again valuable, but Dussaud's conclusions were the basis for identifications in Tripoli, Antioch and Edessa.

Introduction In the present article we consider military relations between Latins and Georgians (Iberians) in the period of the Crusades. The research draws on Georgian and non-Georgian medieval sources as well as relevant secondary historical publications and reassesses some of the opinions expressed in the works by Georgian researchers. One of the first mentions of Georgians (Iberians2) in the Medieval Latin sources is a letter of a 12th century Latin clergyman, Ansellus, the Cantor of the Holy Sepulchre, addressed to Gallon the Bishop of Paris [Ansellus 1902: 729-732]. However, the major source of information about the Georgians is Historia Orientalis by Jacques de Vitry, bishop of Acre (†1240) [Jacques de Vitry 2008]. The chronicle was written at the time of the Fifth Crusade.     ‘The Conquest of the Holy Land by Saladin’ This account of Saladin’s conquest of the Holy Land has come down to us in association with the Chronicon Anglicanum of Ralph of Coggeshall, a Cistercian from Essex who was one of the most important historians of early thirteenth-century England. However, while the author who compiled the tract may have been English, Ralph himself was not the person responsible. The particular value of this tract is that while in its present form it probably dates from c. 1220, it incorporates an earlier eye-witness account from a soldier who took part in the defence of Jerusalem and was wounded during the siege. The later compiler expanded this, adding details concerning the holy sites taken by the Muslims, quite possibly taken from a contemporary pilgrim guide, a brief account of the subsequent Third Crusade, which seems to have been taken from the much longer ‘Itinerary of King Richard’ by Richard de Templo, 1 and various passages of lamentation and moralising over the supposed iniquities of the Christians that had led God to allow the Muslims to succeed. The text has been translated from the De Expugnatione Terra Sanctae per Saladinum, in Ralph of Coggeshall, Chronicon Anglicanum, ed. J. Stevenson (Rolls Series, London 1875), 209-62. Use has been made of a previous translation of some passages from this tract by James Brundage, The Crusades: A Documentary History, (Milwaukee, 1962), 153-159, although the version here, which is a complete translation, and thus much fuller than the extracts used by Brundage, has been made afresh from the Latin text.

Introduction: The first Crusade, a massive and unprecedented undertaking in the western world, differed from the majority of subsequent crusades into the Holy Land in an important way: it contained no royalty and was undertaken with very little direct support from the ruling families of Western Europe. This aspect of the crusade led to the development of sophisticated hierarchies and vassalages among the knights who led the crusade. These relationships culminated in the formation of the Crusader States, Latin outposts in the Levant surrounded by Muslim states, and populated primarily by non-Catholic or non-Christian peoples. Despite the difficulties engendered by this situation, the Crusader States managed to maintain control over the Holy Land for much of the twelfth century, and, to a lesser degree, for several decades after the Fall of Jerusalem in 1187 to Saladin.

This thesis offers the first full assessment of the thirteenth century principality of Antioch since the publication of Claude Cahen’s La Syrie du nord à l’époque des croisades et la principauté franque d’Antioche in 1940. It examines the Latin principality from its devastation by Saladin in 1188 until the fall of Antioch eighty years later, with a particular focus on its relationship with the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia. This thesis shows how the fate of the two states was closely intertwined for much of this period. The failure of the principality to recover from the major territorial losses it suffered in 1188 can be partly explained by the threat posed by the Cilician Armenians in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.

Mitchell (University of Cambridge; [email protected]) Introduction The crusade of King Richard I of England and Philippe Augustus 11of France was ill-fated. In 1191, after just a few days of intense fighting before the walls of Acre, both kings fell ill from an enigmatic illness known in Latin as arnaldia and in French as leonardie. For weeks both Richard and Philippe were close to the brink of death, before they finally recovered. In the summer of 1192 another epidemic struck the crusader army and Richard again became dangerously iIl- this time with a malady referred to asfebris emitritea. For nearly three months his condition was so serious that once again his men feared for his life. At this point Richard had to abandon his plan to capture the Christian holy sites, for Jerusalem was out of the reach of a king lying on a sickbed. After he had made peace with Saladin, Richard immediately returned to Haifa to receive medical treatment. He left the Holy Land in October 1192 and it is likely that his impaired health had been a major factor influencing his return to Europe at that time. The present article describes Richard and Philippe's crusade in terms of the diseases and the medical treatment received.

    The Second Crusade, 1145-49: Damascus, Lisbon and the Wendish Campaigns Abstract: The Second Crusade (1145-49) is thought to have encompassed near simultaneous Christian attacks on Muslim towns and cities in Syria and Iberia and pagan Wend strongholds around the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. The motivations underpinning the attacks on Damascus, Lisbon and – taken collectively – the Wendish strongholds have come in for particular attention. The doomed decision to assault Damascus in 1148 rather than recover Edessa, the capital of the first so-called crusader state, was once thought to be ill-conceived. Historians now believe the city was attacked because Damascus posed a significant threat to the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem when the Second Crusaders arrived in the East. The assault on Lisbon and the Wendish strongholds fell into a long-established pattern of regional, worldly aggression and expansion; therefore, historians tend not to ascribe any spiritual impulses behind the native Christians’ decisions to attack their enemies. Indeed, the siege of Lisbon by an allied force of international crusaders and those of the Portuguese ruler, Afonso Henriques, is perceived primarily as a politico-strategic episode in the on-going Christian-Muslim conflict in Iberia – commonly referred to as the reconquista. The native warrior and commercial elite undoubtedly had various temporal reasons for engaging in warfare in Iberia and the Baltic region between 1147 and 1149, although the article concludes with some notes of caution before clinically construing motivation from behaviour in such instances. On Christmas Eve 1144, Zangī, the Muslim ruler of Aleppo and Mosul, seized the Christian-held city of Edessa in Mesopotamia.

    The Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia (also known as Little Armenia; not to be confused with the Arme- nian Kingdom of Antiquity) was a state formed in the Middle Ages by Armenian refugees fleeing the Seljuk invasion of Armenia. It was located on the Gulf of Alexandretta of the Mediterranean Sea in what is today southern Turkey. The kingdom remained independent from around 1078 to 1375. The Kingdom of Cilicia was founded by the Rubenian dynasty, an offshoot of the larger Bagratid family that at various times held the thrones of Armenia and Georgia. Their capital was Sis. Cilicia was a strong ally of the European Crusaders, and saw itself as a bastion of Christendom in the East. It also served as a focus for Armenian nationalism and culture, since Armenia was under foreign oc- cupation at the time. King Levon I of Armenia helped cultivate Cilicia's economy and commerce as its interaction with European traders grew. Major cities and castles of the kingdom included the port of Korikos, Lam- pron, Partzerpert, Vahka (modern Feke), Hromkla, Tarsus, Anazarbe, Til Hamdoun, Mamistra (modern Misis: the classical Mopsuestia), Adana and the port of Ayas (Aias) which served as a Western terminal to the East. The Pisans, Genoese and Venetians established colonies in Ayas through treaties with Cilician Armenia in the thirteenth century.[3] Marco Polo, for example, set out on his journey to China from Ayas in 1271. For a short time in the 1st century BCE the powerful kingdom of Armenia was able to conquer a vast region in the Levant, including the area of Cilicia.

From the beginning of the twelfth century, the Syrian cities and the Crusader States preserved the balance of power through economic agreements and military alliances. However, Zangi, ruler of Aleppo, refused to maintain this balance-of-power policy and started to advance southward in Syria to recover lost territories from the Crusaders and obtain farmland which was under Damascus' rule. John carried out his expedition at this time. John compelled Raymond of Poitiers, the consort of the heiress of Antioch, to become his liege vassal. John and Raymond agreed that Raymond would hand Antioch over to John in return for cities, currently in Muslim hands, which John would capture leading a joint Byzantine-Cru- sader army. But Raymond had John attack cities whose power Raymond himself wanted to reduce. Also, as the nobility of Antioch, who had come from south Italy, had influence over Raymond, John could not appoint a Greek Orthodox cleric as patriarch of Antioch. Furthermore, an encyclical issued by Pope Innocent II stating that all Latins serving in the Byzantine army were forbidden to attack Christians in Crusader States, forced John to reduce his claims on Antioch, being conscious of the West's eyes.

PART I of this paper, published in the last volume of the Journal, was concerned with the dat- ing of King John’s Irish REX coinage.1 This second part explores the coinage’s symbolism. Although this is a subject that has intrigued antiquaries and numismatists for the past three centuries its treatment has in its nature been highly speculative since there is no contemporary testimony to throw any light on the significance of the imagery; indeed, the most one can hope to achieve is an informed guess at what was intended. What immediately catches the eye in Fig. 1 (above) is the triangle that is the prominent fea- ture of both the obverse and reverse of each of the three denominations of the coinage. The earliest authorities such as Sir James Ware and Bishop Nicholson believed that it represented a harp.2 By John Lindsay’s time, however, such an interpretation had fallen into disfavour although there was little agreement as to an alternative, some believing that it referred to the presumed geographical outline of Ireland. Lindsay himself came to accept Richard Sainthill’s view that the triangle was an emblem of the Trinity, an argument that Sainthill thought was strengthened by the presence of the cosmic symbols on the coinage’s reverse that he regarded, not implausibly, as having religious significance.3 James Simon, a century earlier, had come to the more prosaic view that the triangle was intended simply to distinguish the Irish coinage from that of England.
