The Rise and Fall of the Oslo School

Eriksen, Tore Jørgen Hanisch1, Arild Sæther The Rise and Fall of the Oslo School2 Abstract In 1931 Ragnar Frisch became professor at the University of Oslo. By way of his research, a new study programme and new staff he created the ”Oslo School”, characterised by mathematical modelling, econometrics, economic planning and scepticism towards the market economy. Consequently, detailed state economic planning and governance dominated Norwegian economic policy for three decades after WWII. In the 1970s the School’s dominance came to an end when the belief in competitive markets gained a foothold and the economy had poor performance. As a result a decentralized market economy was reintroduced. However, mathematical modelling and econometrics remain in the core of most economic programmes. JEL classification: B23, B29,B31, B59, O21, P41, P51 1. Introduction The main purpose of this presentation is to tell the story of how Ragnar Frisch founded the so-called Oslo School in economics, and secondly, to outline the main features of this School and investigate its major influence on the Norwegian post-war economy. -

Justifications of deregulating financial markets in Norway and Finland Forfatter(e) Prosjektnummer Faglig ansvarlig sign. Summary The report documents that the deregulation of the Norwegian and Finnish economy primarily was about politics and political processes, and to a much lesser extent about justifications rooted in economic theory. Nor neoliberal philosophy as we know it from the US and Britain played a major role in the two countries. Instead, it was about the notion, and the emergence of, a new kind of welfare state in need of a moral legitimization of autonomy. -

Tunisian democracy group wins Nobel Peace Prize 9 October 2015, byMark Lewis And Karl Ritter Tunisian protesters sparked uprisings across the Arab world in 2011 that overthrew dictators and upset the status quo. Tunisia is the only country in the region to painstakingly build a democracy, involving a range of political and social forces in dialogue to create a constitution, legislature and democratic institutions. "More than anything, the prize is intended as an encouragement to the Tunisian people, who despite major challenges have laid the groundwork for a national fraternity which the committee hopes will serve as an example to be followed by other countries," committee chair Kaci Kullmann Five said. In 1959 EFTA was instead established, with the three Scandinavian countries included among the seven founding countries. Contemporary observers claimed that the Scandinavian cus- toms union henceforth ". at most would serve as a subject for dissertations for future researchers on Nordic cooperation".3 This article is based on my dissertation on the plans for a Scandinavian customs union, and the Norwegian attitude towards these. Norway has been judged, both by contemporaries and in hindsight by researchers, to be the most reluctant among the Scandinavian countries towards Scandinavian cooperation and a Scandinavian customs union. This conclusion will be discussed and modified in this article. My argument is that Norway throughout this period pursued a fairly consistent and positive policy towards closer Scandi- Ingrid Sogner, born 1964, Cand.
