From the view point of the ecological aspects, characteristics of Japanese cas- tle-town, JYOKAMACHI, was dedicated as one of important factors to identify urban planning methods. Therefore, the location of castle and its urban structure were investigated. GIS is used to analyze the loca- tion of castle and its urban structure by mean of watershed based analysis. Results showed that among 86 castle locations, about 34% of castle locations of Hilltop, Mountaintop and Flatland is located on the catchment edge, 60% is located near by the catchment edge and 6% is located in the middle of the catch- ment edge. 88% of most of the castle locations was found located at the highest elevation area comparing to its surrounding and within the catchment it’s located. It can be said that most of the castle locations tends to be located at the highest elevation area as a unit of watershed. 10 cases of overlaying maps between urban structure of castle-town in edo period and catchment maps showed that urban structure of castle-town had strong relationship with watershed.

Oleg Benesch and Ran Zwigenberg argue that Japan’s modern transformations can be traced through its castles. They examine how castle preservation and reconstruction campaigns served as symbolic ways to assert particular views of the past and were crucial in the making of an idealized premodern history. Castles have been used to craft identities, to create and erase memories, and to link tradition to moder- nity. Until 1945, they served as physical and symbolic links between the modern military and the nation’s premodern martial heritage. After 1945, castles were cleansed of military elements and transformed into public cultural spaces that celebrated both modernity and the pre- imperial past. What were once signs of military power have become symbols of Japan’s idealized peaceful past. Oleg Benesch is Senior Lecturer in East Asian History at the University of York. He is the author of Inventing the Way of the Samurai: Nationalism, Internationalism, and Bushido in Modern Japan. Ran Zwigenberg is Assistant Professor at Pennsylvania State University. It was established in 1934 as one of the fi rst national parks in Japan. 11 The park is made up of a vast number of mountains rising 3,000 meters above sea level, including the Hotaka Mountain National Park Range with Mt. Yarigatake, Mt. Norikura located at the southernmost end of the park, the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range known for Mt. Shirouma, and the Tateyama Mountain Range which contains Mt. Tsurugi and Mt. Tateyama. The parkʼs steep rock cliff s, deep and precipitous valleys, alpine belts featuring beautiful fl owers and rock ptarmigans, the Japanese grouse, valleys that remain snow-covered until the summer, glacier-eroded U-shaped valleys, and lakes, marshes, and lava plateaus formed by volcanoes all build to create a diverse mountain landscape that has captivated countless climbers over the centuries. As the park lies within mountainous terrain with heavy snowfall, snow remains during the summer, and the area is dotted with gorges of various sizes, such as Japan's three most famous snowy gorges, namely the Tsurugisawa Snow Valley, Hakuba Daisekkei Valley, and Harinoki Snow Valley. Other features include the cirques valleys and glacial troughs formed by glaciers as typifi ed by the cirques found at Karasawa, Mt. Tateyama, and Mt. Yakushi, as well as the glacial troughs at Yarisawa and Mt. Tateyama. The mountains located in the region, which includes the national park area, was named the Japanese Alps by William Gowland, an Englishman said to have been the fi rst foreigner to climb Mt.
