Chubusangaku National Park Is a Mountainous Park Synonymous with the Japanese Alps, Covering the Entire Northern Alps Chubusangaku Region Scale the Japanese alps and discover breathtaking mountains and tranquil valleys which the Japanese grouse calls home Chubusangaku National Park is a mountainous park synonymous with the Japanese Alps, covering the entire Northern Alps Chubusangaku region. It was established in 1934 as one of the fi rst national parks in Japan. 11 The park is made up of a vast number of mountains rising 3,000 meters above sea level, including the Hotaka Mountain National Park Range with Mt. Yarigatake, Mt. Norikura located at the southernmost end of the park, the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range known for Mt. Shirouma, and the Tateyama Mountain Range which contains Mt. Tsurugi and Mt. Tateyama. The parkʼs steep rock cliff s, deep and precipitous valleys, alpine belts featuring beautiful fl owers and rock ptarmigans, the Japanese grouse, valleys that remain snow-covered until the summer, glacier-eroded U-shaped valleys, and lakes, marshes, and lava plateaus formed by volcanoes all build to create a diverse mountain landscape that has captivated countless climbers over the centuries. As the park lies within mountainous terrain with heavy snowfall, snow remains during the summer, and the area is dotted with gorges of various sizes, such as Japan's three most famous snowy gorges, namely the Tsurugisawa Snow Valley, Hakuba Daisekkei Valley, and Harinoki Snow Valley. Other features include the cirques valleys and glacial troughs formed by glaciers as typifi ed by the cirques found at Karasawa, Mt. Tateyama, and Mt. Yakushi, as well as the glacial troughs at Yarisawa and Mt. Tateyama. The mountains located in the region, which includes the national park area, was named the Japanese Alps by William Gowland, an Englishman said to have been the fi rst foreigner to climb Mt. Yarigatake. In addition, the trailheads at Kamikochi, Tatamidaira on Mt. Norikura, and Murodo on Mt. Tateyama are easily accessible via public transportation and visitors can enjoy a view of the magnificent mountainous landscape and observe various alpine animals and plants without any strenuous hiking. ■Access 新潟県 Kurobe Unazuki Station Keyakidaira Toyama Station Station Toyama Nagano Station Hakuba Happo Station Takayama Nagano Station Tokyo Prefecture Station Nagano Shinjuku Toyama Station Station Prefecture Tateyama Nagoya 群馬県 Matsumoto Station Murodo Station Shinhotaka Hirayu National park area Kamikochi Major road Honokidaira Expressway Shinkanse Matsumoto Station JR Shinshimashima Station Private Railway Takayama Kamikochi, Station Tatamidaira Access Route Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture Approx. Before and after departure for an academic exchange, the Office of Education Abroad will remain a resource and guide for participating exchange students. Japan Japan is home to almost 128 million people spread out on over 3,000 islands. The four main islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, account for 97% of Japan’s total land area. Over 70% of the country is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural or residential use. The beauty of nature, undisturbed by humans, will surround and astound you. Legend attributes the creation of Japan to the sun goddess, from whom the emperors were thought to be descended. In acknowledgement of this, the characters that make up Japan’s name translate to “sun-origin” and give Japan its nickname of the “Land of the Rising Sun.” Japan’s culture has evolved greatly over the years from its traditional ways to its current culture, which includes influences from Europe, North American, and the rest of Asia.

On the basis of the recognition that the dissemination to overseas countries of information on the Japanese local governance system and its operation was insufficient, the objective of this project was defined as the pursuit of comparative studies on local governance by means of compiling in foreign languages materials on the Japanese local governance system and its implementation as well as by accumulating literature and reference materials on local governance in Japan and foreign countries.

THE CHRISTl4N FAITH IN JAPAN PUBLISHED BY Q:b.e iatictn for tb.e 'rotJagati.ou af tb.e Oiasutl itt Jonign fads 19 DELAHAY STREET, WESTMINSTER, S.W. 1904 PREFATORY NOTE THE aim of this little volume is not to give a complete account of missionary work in Japan, still less to provide a general description of the country or the people, but to afford to the general reader a sufficient introduction to both to enable him to appreciate the work which the 'Holy Catholic Church of Japan' has already accomplished, and its prospects of development in the immediate future. By far the greater number of professing Christians in Japan at the present time are attached to the Russian or the Roman Missions or to Missions started by various Non conformist Bodies. It is from no desire to create a false impression of the importance, from a numerical standpoint, of the Japan Church that a detailed account of these other Missions has been omitted. The omission is simply due to exigencies of space. The Rev. Herbert Moore, to whom the Society is indebted for writing this account of its work, was a member of the St. Andrew's Brotherhood, Tokyo, from 1891 to 18951 and was afterwards a missionary at Kobe for two years.
