DIACHRONIC ASSESMENT OF THE WORDS TAMU AND CEHENNEM Abstract As in every community who believe that new life begins after death also in Turkish society it has terms of life after death. The belief that punishment or reward as a good or bad things made response in the world has brought with it the concept of heaven and hell. These terms were also frequently mentioned in Religious books. “Tamu” used to be place name where punishment was paid before Islam in the Turkish belief system, and “cehennem” word was included from Islamic Arabic word. Tamu and cehennem had been used together for a long time in the texts but later the word cehennem simply replaced .
