The Training Campaign on board the Amerigo Vespucci represents a key element in the cadet professional development, passing on the Italian Navy’s core values of love for the sea, ethics, loyalty and honor. On the 19th of April the ‘most beautiful ship in the world’ set sail from the Italian Naval Base in La Spezia, to start the Training Campaign 2017 and visited so far two ports in Portugal (Sines and Funchal), then, after 20 days of navigation across the Atlantic ocean, Hamilton, in the Bermuda islands, and three ports of call in Canada: Halifax, Montreal and Quebec City. New York is the second port of call in the U.S.A., after Boston. During a port visit in Montreal (Canada) the 79 on-term volunteers (VFP4) of the 24th Course which had been on board since the unmooring from La Spezia, were replaced by the 125 Italian Naval Academy of Livorno (including 18 foreign cadets). Navy cadets learn the basics of seamanship, they put into practice what has been studied so far in the books by getting familiar with the marine equipment, climbing up the masts, and using the sextant to calculate the position of the ship with the stars.

    Biography Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence Captain Bruno Scalfaro, ITA-N Doctrine Development Branch Head Captain Bruno Scalfaro was born in Perugia on 14th February 1969. In 1987 he attended the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno from where he was commissioned as Ensign in 1991. Captain Scalfaro has spent the majority of his operational career onboard submarines. From the years 1991-1999, he served the following subsurface assignments: Navigator on the ITS GAZZANA, Weapons Officer on the ITS PELOSI, and later billeted as the Operations and Executive Officer onboard ITS LONGOBARDO. After attending the Naval Command School in Augusta and the Advanced Staff Course in Livorno, he was placed in command of the Italian Minehunter ITS RIMINI from 1999 to 2000. Later he served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer from 2002 to 2004 onboard the Submarine ITS DI COSSATO. In 2004, he was appointed head of the Personnel Section of the Italian Navy General Staff Submarine Department in Rome. He attended the NATO Defense College before being assigned to the Headquarters of the Italian Fleet (CINCNAV) at the Submarine Operations Division in Rome. The newly promoted Commander was designated in 2007 as the Commanding Officer of the Italian Submarine Squadron (COMGRUPSOM) in Taranto. Following his assignment at COMGRUPSOM, he returned to CINCNAV and was promoted to the rank of Captain and designated as Head of the Submarine Operations Division until 2012 and Head of the Personnel Branch of the General Staff until 2014. From 2014 to 2015, he was the Commanding Officer of the Special Naval Group in La Spezia (Supporting group to Italian Naval Special Forces and Divers); he later became Chief of Staff of the Command of the 1st Naval Division in La Spezia (COMDINAV1, Naval Group of the Tyrrhenian Sea mainly formed by Newly Commissioned Frigates).

Il nocciolo della questione venne individuato nell’eccessivo spostamento dell’asse formativo verso le discipline scientifiche in generale e matematiche in particolare. Gli oppositori obiettarono che la formazione matematica non fosse utile alla creazione di comandanti ed ammiragli e lamentarono un profondo e pericoloso disinteresse verso il lato umano ed emotivo della professione di ufficiale. Nel contempo in campo civile le correzioni del sistema educativo spinsero gli istituti tecnici – tra cui figuravano anche i nautici – verso una sempre maggiore presenza delle materie umanistiche, come la storia e la letteratura, nei curricola così da rafforzare la preparazione “umana” e “liberale” degli studenti.
