Saint Peter Chanel Saint Peter Chanel (Priest and Martyr) Saint Peter Chanel was born at Cuet (France) on 12 July 1803 and died on 28 April 1841 on Futuna (South-west Pacific Ocean). 28 April He was a diocesan priest for three years before joining the Society of Mary (Marists). He was sent out to evangelize the people on the Island of Futuna in the Pacific and is remembered for the mis- sionary work he carried out. He learned the local language of the people (there was no Internet or audio-visual materials available in his day) and at first he was very successful in wining converts for Christ. The local ruler Niuliki became jealous of Peter Chanel’s success (especially after Niuliki’s son and one of his friends became baptized) and so he sent some men to set upon Peter Chanel and club him to death. Saint Peter Chanel is honoured as the first martyr of the Church in Oceania. What lesson can we learn from Saint Peter Chanel’s life? What does the word evangelization mean? The biblical definition in Christianity of evangelization is the commitment to or act of publicly preaching (ministry) the Gospel with the intention to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Saint Peter Chanel was so driven by the message of the Gospel that he lost his life because of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus. The challenge Saint Peter Chanel faced is not much different today. We still have to proclaim the message of the Gospel to people who may not want to hear it.

I know that she can afford luxury goods of self-care, but I know that she MASS finds joy in giving of herself in love for the wellbeing of those around her. Weekdays: I know that there are many mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, neighbors, Tuesday at 5:30 PM parishioners, and citizens who resemble the heart of this mother. If there were not, Wednesday through Friday we would not desire to share the more that we want to share in our love and at 8:00 AM service, nor the world will continue to remain a beautiful place. It is the reflections of such hearts that continue to challenge us to give ourselves away even when we Weekend: may want to or choose to remain locked in our measured love for others. Online: 4:00 PM Saturday: 5:00 PM The shepherding hinges upon this single act: self-sacrificial love. The Good Sunday: Shepherd reveals how this love unfolds in His ministry. The blind is drawn to see, 8:30 AM & 10:30 AM the deaf is able to hear, the crippled is helped to walk, the sinner experiences forgiveness, the hungry is filled with good things, the wounded is bandaged for Confession healing and restoration, the accused is freed for love and goodness, the thirsty is Tuesday through offered the taste of eternal life, and the lost are found in His love.

  • Novena Prayer to St Peter Chanel for Vocations to the Society of Mary April 20Th – April 28Th
Novena Prayer to St Peter Chanel for Vocations to the Society of Mary April 20th – April 28th Structure of the Novena Prayer Each day the prayer consists of the readings and intercession on the appropriate page. The prayer time should conclude with one of the following prayers 1. St Peter Chanel you left your homeland to proclaim Jesus, Saviour of the world, to the peoples of Oceania. Guided by the Spirit of God, who is the strength of the gentle, you bore witness to love, even laying down your life. Grant that like you we may live our daily life in peace, joy, and in love. May your prayer and example call forth from our midst many workers for the Gospel so that God’s kingdom may reach to the ends of the earth. 2. Lord Jesus You gave the Church St Peter Chanel as an example to Marists and the people of Oceania of gentleness, compassion and love in action. Welcome many young men and women into the Marist Family, to work as Priests, Brothers and Sisters. Help us too to share our charism with lay people throughout the world and to work in partnership with them in Mission for the good of your Church and our world. This prayer we make to the father in your name and through the Holy Spirit. Amen. Mary Mother of the Church and our mother, choose more young people to follow Jesus your Son in religious life and priesthood and to bear your name as members of your Society. The biographical quotes are taken from Jan Snijders: A Mission Too Far..
