Excerpt taken from Liturgy of the Hours Feast of St. Joseph, March 19 BULLETIN SUBMISSION DEADLINES Bulletin Date Deadline Date May 9 April 28 May 16 May 5 May 23 May 12 From the Pastor Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate World Day of Prayer for Vocations. This Sunday is also called Good Shepherd Sunday because the readings are about Jesus, the Good Shepherd. We pray that we have more Good Shepherds like Jesus to serve the Church. One such good shepherd was Padre Pio who was born today in 1887. For over 50 years, as a Capuchin Franciscan, he heard many confessions. Also on this day please remember Blessed Jose Trinidad who was asked to go to San Francisco del Rincon. It was risky because religious persecution was fierce in the 1920s in Mexico. He was discovered on April 22nd during his mission when the safe house own by some lay friends was raided by authorities. Two other priests were also there on that day and arrested. They were falsely accused of a recent train derailment. They were taken to the site of the derailment on April 25th. Before they were shot and killed, they spread their arms in the sign of the cross. They were beatified along with 10 other Mexican martyrs in 2005. April 26th is the Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel. On the Feast of St. mark in 1467, worshippers gathered at a tiny church in an Italian town near Rome which was undergoing renovations. Suddenly they saw an image of Our Lady of Good Counsel suspended in the air before the unfinished church wall. Devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel quickly sprung up after that event. The image is one of Mary tenderly holding the infant Jesus after they had returned from hearing Simeon’s prophecies at the Temple. Bishop Juan Geradi, Auxiliary Bishop of Guatemala City, investigated human rights abuses in the 36 year Guatemalan civil war which ended in 1996. Two years later he presented his findings. The conclusion was that almost 90% of the 200,000 non-combatant deaths and disappearances were caused by the military. Two days after he presented his report on April 26, 1998, military assassins ambushed Bishop Geradi in his home and smashed in his skull with a slab of cement. April 28th is the Feast of Peter Chanel who lived from 1803—1841. He wanted to be a missionary and joined the Marists at the age of 28. The Bishop left Peter and a Marist Brother on Futuna Island in New Hebrides. He promised to return in six months. The interval lasted five years. He struggles with the unknown language and the difficult adjustments with whalers, traders and warring natives. As few natives were baptized. When the chieftain’s son asked to be baptized, persecution by the chieftain reached a climax. Fr. Chanel was surrounded in his hut, clubbed to death, and his body cut into pieces. Within two years of his death, the whole island became Catholic. He is the first martyr of Oceania and its Patron. April 28th is also the Feast of St. Gianna Beretta Molla who lived from 1922-1962. She was a wife, mother and doctor. In September 1961 in her second month of pregnancy, she developed a tumor in her uterus. Before the surgical operation and conscious of the risk that her continued pregnancy brought, she pleaded with the surgeon to save the life of the child she was carrying. “If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate to choose the child. I insist on it. Save her.” On April 21, 1962 Ginna Emanuela was born. Despite all the efforts and treatment to save both of them, on the morning of April 28th amid unspeakable pain and after repeated exclamations of “Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I love you.” St. Gianna Molla died. She was canonized May 16th, 2004. The Feast of St. Louis Mary de Montfort is also on April 28th. He lived from 1673-1716. He wrote the famous book True Devotion to Mary, a book that deeply influenced St. John Paul II and where he got his motto “Totus Tuus,” all for Mary. On April 28th we also remember Blessed Luchesio and Buonadonna. St. Francis decided to establish a Third Order for lay people living in the world. By tradition, they are the first Franciscans in this Third Order commissioned by St. Francis. Both husband and wife died on the same day, April 28, 1260. April 29th is the Feast of St. Catherine Siena who lived from 1347—1380. She entered the Dominican Third Order at 18. Catherine ranks high among mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. Her spiritual testament is found in the book call The Dialogue. For her writings she is call a Doctor of the Church. April 30th is the Feast of St. Marie of the Incarnation. In 1639 she led a group of nuns to Quebec where she founded a school which became a center for French settlers and natives alike. She served over 33 years in the New World. The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker is May 1st. In response to “May Day” celebrations for workers sponsored by Communists, Pius XIII instituted the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker in 1955. Jesus was trained by Joseph to be a carpenter. Holiness is possible in the ordinary circumstances of life which Jesus lived with Mary and Joseph Yours in Christ, Fr.
