The Sacrament of Confirmation

As I mentioned last fall, we usually have two Confirmation Services during the year. However, because of the current health crisis, we had six services in the Fall in order to maintain proper social distancing. Our first two services took place at the end of August, and there were four more during the month of September. Since the are not doing Confirmations at this time, Pastors have been given delegation. It is my great honor to Confirm our young people again this year. Therefore, we will have five Confirmation Services in April so that we will not have too many parishioners in church at one time.

As a parish family, we pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten and strengthen the Confirmandi. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, may they be good Christian ladies and gentlemen who truly live the Gospel in their lives.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. George

From the book of Confirmation Within Mass we read:

The Apostles, who had received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost in fulfillment of the Lord’s promise, had power to complete the work of by the giving of the Holy Spirit, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles. When Paul had laid his hands on certain people who had been baptized, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

The Bishops, as successors of the Apostles, possess the same power and, either in their own right or through Priests lawfully appointed to fulfill this ministry, they confer the Holy Spirit on those who have already been born again in Baptism.

Even if today the coming of the Holy Spirit is no longer widely made manifest by the gift of tongues, we know by faith that the Spirit, through whom the love of God has been poured into our hearts and through whom we are gathered in unity of faith and in diversity of callings, is received by us and is working invisibly to make the Church holy and one.

Our Lady of the Lakes Parish

In the next month we have both our teens making the sacrament of Confirmation and our young ones making their First Holy Communion. Do you recall when you made these sacraments? Who was with you and how did you celebrate?

We are asking our congregation to prayer for our candidates both as a group and individually. Today after Mass there are some baskets with numbers in them and we ask you to take one or more so that you can pray for that student by name. You can email me Deacon Mark at [email protected] and I will respond by giving you their first name and last initial for you to pray for them. For privacy reasons we do not want to give out any other information. If you do not have a computer call me at 847-587-2301 and I will respond with the same information. The goal is not to pick a particular person but to pray for whomever you happen to get. Perhaps this could be the Holy Spirit pairing you up with a special person who needs those prayers. So, all you prayer warriors pick a number (or two) for our young men and women in their sacramental life.

Religious Education News Many of our classes are finishing the year in the next few weeks. This has been a very trying year with all remote classes and home classes. A very large thank you to our catechists and parents for all the extra work Zooming and teaching at home. With my own health issues this year it was hard to be out of the office recovering from surgery and COVID. So, my special prayers and blessing for all that you have done. I will continue to be a Deacon at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish but will be retiring from full time ministry at the end of June. I miss seeing all my little ones each week, but I will still see them at church and in the community. God Bless You All!

I am seeking persons who want to help with the Evangelization programs at Our Lady of the Lakes in the future. We just finished from our FORMED membership the program called THE SEARCH which all of you have access to and I encourage you to watch the programs. All who came shared on ZOOM and had both great discussions and growth in their faith. Thanks to all, if you have that desire to share the faith call me at the faith formation office and we can talk.

14 OUR LADY OF THE LAKES PARISH - ST. PETER CHURCH ANTIOCH, IL - ST.BEDE CHURCH INGLESIDE IL Fourth Sunday of Easter

There is nothing like belonging. Many of our deepest experiences in life are of the belonging we feel among family or close friends. We may experi- ence belonging within our parish, even saying we are “at home” in our faith community. Sometimes, we say we belong to a school alumni association or social club. Our deepest belonging, however, is in the heart of God. We are God’s children, precious in God’s sight. We are so treasured that Jesus laid down his life for us. Knowing that we belong to God in Jesus Christ gives us a new, eternal perspective on life. Peter understood this when he explained that his healing of the man who had been disabled from birth had been accomplished through Christ. Jesus describes the relationship between him and those who believe in him in intimate terms—we who are in relationship with Christ know that our very lives depend upon him.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD The difference between the good shepherd and the hired hand is the difference between life and death. Unlike a hired hand who only works for pay and would run away at the first sign of difficulty, Jesus is a good shepherd who willingly lays down his life for his sheep. The good shepherd draws the sheep near to him. They belong to him—not as a possession that can be discarded, but as precious ones who are assured that they can rely on his care and protection. The sheep owe their very lives to the shepherd. Without him, they will be scattered and left on their own in what is often a dangerous world.

BECOMING GOOD SHEEP No sheep with any sense would wander off and leave the fold. The shepherd provides food and safety. Away from the fold, the sheep risks death in the jaws of wolves or starvation in the desert. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and invites us to be good sheep. Jesus has experienced the best and the worst of all that life has in store. He has known the simple joys and the deep disappointments of life; he has known temptation, anxiety, and fatigue. Jesus walks ahead of us, leading the way. We may be tempted to wander away, lured by temporary pleasures and tempted by the illusion of something better over the horizon. In the noise of daily life, surrounded by messages that compete with God and God’s ways, it is easy to become distracted from what is important and lasting. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, invites us to be good sheep who are so close to him that we hear and recognize his voice. As good sheep, we are called to follow the voice of the Shepherd, trusting that he will guide us to the best pasture, where we can thrive.
