PETER CHURCH ANTIOCH, IL - ST.BEDE CHURCH INGLESIDE IL From Pastor Fr. George Koeune The Sacrament of Confirmation As I mentioned last fall, we usually have two Confirmation Services during the year. However, because of the current health crisis, we had six services in the Fall in order to maintain proper social distancing. Our first two services took place at the end of August, and there were four more during the month of September. Since the Bishops are not doing Confirmations at this time, Pastors have been given delegation. It is my great honor to Confirm our young people again this year. Therefore, we will have five Confirmation Services in April so that we will not have too many parishioners in church at one time. As a parish family, we pray that the Holy Spirit will enlighten and strengthen the Confirmandi. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, may they be good Christian ladies and gentlemen who truly live the Gospel in their lives. Yours in Christ, Fr. George From the book of Confirmation Within Mass we read: The Apostles, who had received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost in fulfillment of the Lord’s promise, had power to complete the work of Baptism by the giving of the Holy Spirit, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles. When Saint Paul had laid his hands on certain people who had been baptized, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. The Bishops, as successors of the Apostles, possess the same power and, either in their own right or through Priests lawfully appointed to fulfill this ministry, they confer the Holy Spirit on those who have already been born again in Baptism. Even if today the coming of the Holy Spirit is no longer widely made manifest by the gift of tongues, we know by faith that the Spirit, through whom the love of God has been poured into our hearts and through whom we are gathered in unity of faith and in diversity of callings, is received by us and is working invisibly to make the Church holy and one.     Saint Peter Chanel Saint Peter Chanel (Priest and Martyr) Saint Peter Chanel was born at Cuet (France) on 12 July 1803 and died on 28 April 1841 on Futuna (South-west Pacific Ocean). 28 April He was a diocesan priest for three years before joining the Society of Mary (Marists). He was sent out to evangelize the people on the Island of Futuna in the Pacific and is remembered for the mis- sionary work he carried out. He learned the local language of the people (there was no Internet or audio-visual materials available in his day) and at first he was very successful in wining converts for Christ. The local ruler Niuliki became jealous of Peter Chanel’s success (especially after Niuliki’s son and one of his friends became baptized) and so he sent some men to set upon Peter Chanel and club him to death. Saint Peter Chanel is honoured as the first martyr of the Church in Oceania. What lesson can we learn from Saint Peter Chanel’s life? What does the word evangelization mean? The biblical definition in Christianity of evangelization is the commitment to or act of publicly preaching (ministry) the Gospel with the intention to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Saint Peter Chanel was so driven by the message of the Gospel that he lost his life because of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus. The challenge Saint Peter Chanel faced is not much different today. We still have to proclaim the message of the Gospel to people who may not want to hear it.

Pope Francis has made 2021 a special Holy Year honoring Saint Joseph, and we are grateful for this gift –– a reminder to all of us, especially spouse’s and par- ents, are called to a life of holiness amid struggles and challenges. We will bless the statue at the 5:00 PM Mass next Saturday, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. The statue will soon be placed near the Sacred Heart at the west exit doors of the church.
