With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight." This weekend would have been the first of three weekends that the girls and boys of our parish were to celebrate and receive their First Holy Communion. Among all the things that the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted and postponed, it is especially painful for our faith community that First Communions, along with weddings and baptisms and funeral masses, have had to have been put off for another day. The families preparing for these sacramental moments must feel a little like the 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus in today's gospel. There they were with Jesus. He was walking and talking with them, catechizing them, teaching them. They finally come to that moment of celebration at table with the Lord, and then all of a sudden he is gone ("he vanished from their sight"). Yet still they go back to the apostles with joy and excitement ("Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way") that they had seen the Risen Lord! The celebration of many of our sacraments have been delayed, but they have not vanished. Jesus walks and talks with us through this whole crisis as we find new ways to live our faith. Jesus walks and talks with us in our homes, in our hospitals, in our supermarkets, in our food pantries, in the work of first responders, healthcare workers, teachers. and everyday workers and volunteers who provide us with what we need. And some day soon we will celebrate those special moments you have been preparing for. A SPECIAL WORD TO OUR FIRST COMMUNION BOYS AND GIRLS: You will receive Jesus in Holy Communion when it's OK for us to come back to Church together. You will celebrate AND WE WILL ALL CELEBRATE WITH YOU! Sometimes waiting for something a little longer makes it taste that much more delicious. I'm sorry you have to wait, but don't worry. We will celebrate with you. And you will recognize Jesus IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD! May our hearts burn with Love for Jesus! And may we all some day soon see him in the breaking of the bread! Peace, COMI NG SOON…. OUR BRAND NEW WEBSITE! STAY TUNED FOR OUR LAUNCH DATE! In our joys and sorrows, in the midst of trust and fear, may we continue to grow into a more loving and welcoming community founded in prayer and good works. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK: Holy Communion will be ministered by appointment to those confined to home. Contact the Rectory Office to schedule a visit by one of our Eucharistic Ministers. Those who are dangerously ill should request a priest for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. BECOMING A CATHOLIC: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community and receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

  • Saint Peter Chanel
Saint Peter Chanel Saint Peter Chanel (Priest and Martyr) Saint Peter Chanel was born at Cuet (France) on 12 July 1803 and died on 28 April 1841 on Futuna (South-west Pacific Ocean). 28 April He was a diocesan priest for three years before joining the Society of Mary (Marists). He was sent out to evangelize the people on the Island of Futuna in the Pacific and is remembered for the mis- sionary work he carried out. He learned the local language of the people (there was no Internet or audio-visual materials available in his day) and at first he was very successful in wining converts for Christ. The local ruler Niuliki became jealous of Peter Chanel’s success (especially after Niuliki’s son and one of his friends became baptized) and so he sent some men to set upon Peter Chanel and club him to death. Saint Peter Chanel is honoured as the first martyr of the Church in Oceania. What lesson can we learn from Saint Peter Chanel’s life? What does the word evangelization mean? The biblical definition in Christianity of evangelization is the commitment to or act of publicly preaching (ministry) the Gospel with the intention to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Saint Peter Chanel was so driven by the message of the Gospel that he lost his life because of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus. The challenge Saint Peter Chanel faced is not much different today. We still have to proclaim the message of the Gospel to people who may not want to hear it.

Weekdays: I know that there are many mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, neighbors, Tuesday at 5:30 PM parishioners, and citizens who resemble the heart of this mother. If there were not, Wednesday through Friday we would not desire to share the more that we want to share in our love and at 8:00 AM service, nor the world will continue to remain a beautiful place. Novena Prayer to St Peter Chanel for Vocations to the Society of Mary April 20th – April 28th Structure of the Novena Prayer Each day the prayer consists of the readings and intercession on the appropriate page. The prayer time should conclude with one of the following prayers 1. St Peter Chanel you left your homeland to proclaim Jesus, Saviour of the world, to the peoples of Oceania. Guided by the Spirit of God, who is the strength of the gentle, you bore witness to love, even laying down your life. Grant that like you we may live our daily life in peace, joy, and in love. May your prayer and example call forth from our midst many workers for the Gospel so that God’s kingdom may reach to the ends of the earth. 2. Lord Jesus You gave the Church St Peter Chanel as an example to Marists and the people of Oceania of gentleness, compassion and love in action. Welcome many young men and women into the Marist Family, to work as Priests, Brothers and Sisters. Help us too to share our charism with lay people throughout the world and to work in partnership with them in Mission for the good of your Church and our world. This prayer we make to the father in your name and through the Holy Spirit. Amen. Mary Mother of the Church and our mother, choose more young people to follow Jesus your Son in religious life and priesthood and to bear your name as members of your Society. The biographical quotes are taken from Jan Snijders: A Mission Too Far..
