First, notice how the disciples tell this traveler (Jesus) about all that had happened in Jerusalem and then Jesus’ response to them. He says: “‘Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not nec- Monday, April 27 essary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?’ Then beginning Adoration, with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Confession Scriptures.” & Benediction (SM) 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Isn’t this exactly what happens at Mass? In the first part of Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, we hear the readings from Scripture. These readings usually come from the Law or the Prophets, then a Psalm (Old Testament), then a New Testament reading and a passage from the Gospel. One purpose of the homily or sermon is precisely to show how Wed, April 29 all these readings relate to Jesus, who He is and what He means for us. Adoration, Confession Second, when they arrive at Emmaus, we can see how Jesus’ identity is revealed. & Benediction “So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were St. Katharine Drexel opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.” Why did He vanish? at St. Patrick’s, He vanished because He is the Bread. In this short passage we have a basic outline of the Macedon Mass: the Scriptures are read, they are explained, and – just as we see Jesus doing at the Last Supper and in our Gospel today – the priest takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to the people since it is truly Christ’s own Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. At each Mass, Jesus comes to us, personally, to offer Himself at the hands of the priest, as our food for the journey. “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” In Christ, Father Amato April 26, 2020 St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish page two Pastor: PARISH INFORMATION Mary Ann Hallman, Gerard Fr. • Saint Peter Chanel
Saint Peter Chanel Saint Peter Chanel (Priest and Martyr) Saint Peter Chanel was born at Cuet (France) on 12 July 1803 and died on 28 April 1841 on Futuna (South-west Pacific Ocean). 28 April He was a diocesan priest for three years before joining the Society of Mary (Marists). He was sent out to evangelize the people on the Island of Futuna in the Pacific and is remembered for the mis- sionary work he carried out. He learned the local language of the people (there was no Internet or audio-visual materials available in his day) and at first he was very successful in wining converts for Christ. The local ruler Niuliki became jealous of Peter Chanel’s success (especially after Niuliki’s son and one of his friends became baptized) and so he sent some men to set upon Peter Chanel and club him to death. Saint Peter Chanel is honoured as the first martyr of the Church in Oceania. What lesson can we learn from Saint Peter Chanel’s life? What does the word evangelization mean? The biblical definition in Christianity of evangelization is the commitment to or act of publicly preaching (ministry) the Gospel with the intention to share the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Saint Peter Chanel was so driven by the message of the Gospel that he lost his life because of his commitment to the teachings of Jesus. The challenge Saint Peter Chanel faced is not much different today. We still have to proclaim the message of the Gospel to people who may not want to hear it.

Novena Prayer to St Peter Chanel for Vocations to the Society of Mary April 20th – April 28th Structure of the Novena Prayer Each day the prayer consists of the readings and intercession on the appropriate page. The prayer time should conclude with one of the following prayers 1. St Peter Chanel you left your homeland to proclaim Jesus, Saviour of the world, to the peoples of Oceania. Guided by the Spirit of God, who is the strength of the gentle, you bore witness to love, even laying down your life. Grant that like you we may live our daily life in peace, joy, and in love. May your prayer and example call forth from our midst many workers for the Gospel so that God’s kingdom may reach to the ends of the earth. 2. Lord Jesus You gave the Church St Peter Chanel as an example to Marists and the people of Oceania of gentleness, compassion and love in action. Welcome many young men and women into the Marist Family, to work as Priests, Brothers and Sisters. Help us too to share our charism with lay people throughout the world and to work in partnership with them in Mission for the good of your Church and our world. This prayer we make to the father in your name and through the Holy Spirit. Amen. Mary Mother of the Church and our mother, choose more young people to follow Jesus your Son in religious life and priesthood and to bear your name as members of your Society. The biographical quotes are taken from Jan Snijders: A Mission Too Far..
