ABSTRACT Effective Evangelistic Strategies for North Korean Defectors (Talbukmin) in South Korea South Korean churches eagerness for spreading the gospel to North Koreans is a passion. However, because of the barriers between the two Koreas, spreading the Good News is nearly impossible. In the middle of the 1990’s, numerous North Koreans defected to China to avoid starvation. Many South Korean missionaries met North Koreans directly and offered the gospel along with necessities for survival in China. Since the early of 2000’s, many Talbukmin have entered South Korea so South Korean churches have directly met North Koreans and spread the gospel. However, the fruits of evangelism are few. South Korean churches find that Talbukmin are very different from South Koreans in large part due to the sixty-year division. South Korean churches do not know or fully understand the characteristics of the Talbukmin. The evangelism strategies and ministry programs of South Korean churches, which are designed for South Koreans, do not adapt well to serve the Talbukmin. This research lists and describes the following five theories to be used in the development of the effective evangelistic strategies for use with the Talbukmin and for use to interpret the interviews and questionnaires: the conversion theory, the contextualization theory, the homogenous principle, the worldview transformation theory, and the Nevius Mission Plan. In the following research exploration of the evangelization of Talbukmin in South Korea occurs through two major research agendas. The first agenda is concerned with the study of the characteristics of Talbukmin to be used for the evangelists’ understanding of the depth of differences. -

Korea Journal, vol. 60, no. 4 (winter 2020): 86–114. doi: 10.25024/kj.2020.60.4.86 © The Academy of Korean Studies, 2020 Korean Sovereignty, Liberal Democratic Society, and the Underwoods, 1916–1951 Elizabeth UNDERWOOD Abstract Protestant missionaries present in Korea during the period of the US military government and the formation of the Republic of Korea (1945–1948) were observers of and, to some extent, participants in the development of an anti-communist state increasingly aligned with Korean Protestantism. Through the cases of Horace and Ethel Underwood, this paper illustrates that the missionary role in the US military government, Korean society, and Korean state formation must be understood from within the complexities of missionary experience under colonialism, approaches to missions and society, and the personal histories of missionaries with Korea. Beginning with conflicts within the Presbyterian missions in Korea and rooted in Horace Underwood’s pre-colonial Korean childhood, both Underwoods became committed to Korean autonomy and sovereignty, a stance which guided their interactions with their mission and with the American military government. In those interactions they displayed confidence in the promise of a liberal democratic society in Korea as they urged their colleagues to seek and to defer to Korean opinion. Wary of both communism and the authoritarianism displayed in the early Syngman Rhee administration, their words and actions demonstrated a strong faith in the potential of Koreans to forge and participate actively in a vibrant, open, liberal society. Underwood and Korean-American Relations, 1934-1948 An Jong Chol When the US Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK) was established in September 1945 after the end of World War II, the United States was entering unfamiliar terrain and was struggling to manage the situation in Korea. Therefore, General John R. Hodge, the commander of USAMGIK, eagerly sought to obtain experts on Korea. Considering the lack of information about Korea, American missionaries were the only well-organized group who had affection for and information about Korea. Horace H. Underwood in particular was ideally qualified to act as advisor since he had managed the Chosen Christian College (CCC: today’s Yonsei University) as principal from 1934 to 1941. During the latter part of the colonial period, Shinto shrine worship, the ritual that the colonial government enforced upon all the schools, including mission schools, had become a controversial issue. It led to many internal tensions among missionaries, who were divided on the question of how to respond toward the colonial policy. Underwood argued that mission schools should follow the government policy on Shinto worship rather than closing mission schools, so as to maintain Christian influence in the schools. After Underwood returned to the US under an exchange of prisoners of war deal, he cooperated with the US military information agencies in providing Korea-related information. When the war ended, he became an influential advisor to General Hodge and to Archer L. -

Rust, Chair Under the slogan of internationalization, Korean universities have opened international colleges that promise an educational experience on par with elite universities anywhere in the world. These colleges conduct their classes in English and hire Western faculty members as a way to create campus settings that better attract and accommodate foreign students. What is the meaning of “international” in this context? Based on 12 months of fieldwork, my dissertation offers an ethnographic study of an international college in South Korea to uncover underlying assumptions and meanings in the internationalization of higher education. By using an international college as a point of entry, I argue that internationalization reforms equate to the adoption of Anglo-Saxon academic paradigms by which Korean universities have been modeled after in the internationalization of higher education more broadly. With international colleges in particular, the kinds of research activities that count as ii international are not just being adopted, but the knowledge workers themselves—“imported” faculty members from the United States and Western Europe—are brought into a Korean university setting as a way to attract as many foreign students as possible. -

Pioneer Protestant Missionaries in Korea Seoul/1887 William Elliot Griffis Collection, Rutgers University This rare early photograph includes several of the most prominent pioneer American Presbyterian and Methodist missionary families just a year or two after their arrival in Korea. At the far left in the top row is John W. Heron, the first appointed Presbyterian medical doctor who died of dysentery in 1890, only five years after his arrival in Korea as a missionary. In the middle of the same row is Henry G. Appenzeller, the pioneer Methodist missionary educator who established the first Western-style school in Korea known as the Paejae Academy. At the far right is William B. Scranton, the pioneer Methodist medical missionary who perhaps is most remembered today for having brought his mother to Korea. In the middle row at the far left is Mrs. John “Hattie” Herron, who in 1892 became Mrs. James S. Gale following her husbandʼs untimely death. To the right are Mrs. Henry Ella Dodge Appenzeller, Mrs. William B. Scranton, and the indomitable Mrs. Mary F. Scranton, the mother of William B. Scranton, who founded the school for girls that developed into Ewha University. In the bottom row (l–r) are Annie Ellers—a Presbyterian missionary nurse who later transferred to the Methodist Mission following her marriage to Dalzell A. Bunker—Horace G. Underwood, the first ordained Presbyterian missionary in Korea who is most prominently remembered as the founder of the predecessor to Yonsei University, and (probably) Lousia S. Rothwilder, who worked with Mrs. Mary F. Scranton at Ewha and succeeded her as principal. -

Fass, Chair This dissertation examines the career of Horace Newton Allen, an American physician who became the first Protestant missionary to reside in Chosŏn Korea. It focuses specifically on the initial decade of his tenure on the peninsula (1884-1894), the period when he transitioned from a participant of the Protestant foreign mission movement to a member of the American diplomatic service. These years also comprised the formative era of relations between the United States and Korea. Through a close look at Allen’s work and activities, this study uses his story as window into the broader dynamics of the early American-Korean encounter. Conclusion Korea Presbyterian Journal of Theology Vol. 47 No. 3 (2015. 9), 59-82 60 KOREA PRESBYTERIAn JOURNAL OF THEOLOGY Vol. 47 No. 3 Abstract This article discusses the seminary preparation, in America, of the missionaries Horace Underwood (1859-1916) and Henry Appenzeller (1858-1902), both of whom spent most of their adult lives in Korea after their arrival there in 1885. It presents them, in their documented actions and relationships in their seminary years at, respectively, New Brunswick Theological Seminary and Drew Theological Seminary (as it was then called) as being both influenced by, and exemplifying, a spirit of renewed urgency about world mission—a spirit that had begun to manifest itself in American evangelical circles in the early 1880s, and was epitomized in the notion of a “crisis of missions” popularized by the pastor and theologian A. T. Pierson. Both Underwood and Ap- penzeller had direct contact with the broader missionary movement that embodied this renewed spirit of mission, through the then-young organization called the Inter-Seminary Missionary Alliance, the annual meeting of which they both attended in October of 1883, at around the time when they were coming to their decisions to respond to the call to serve in Korea. -

Skinner, Ph.D. Mitchell B. Lerner, Ph.D. Copyright by Hye-jung Park 2019 Abstract This dissertation examines music in US-Korea relations from 1941 to 1960. Beginning during World War II, the US government disseminated Western classical and American music in Korea. After the war, the United States also gained the confidence of Koreans by supporting Korean traditional music that had been suppressed under Japanese colonial rule. Yet South Koreans were not merely passive recipients of US propaganda. As the Korean War divided Korea into North and South, South Korean officials used music to affirm the anti-Communist alliance between South Korea and the United States. American music spread rapidly in South Korea, contributing to the formation of South Korean identities different from those of the Communist North. By tracing a history of musical relations in the transitional period from the colonial era to the early Cold War, this project emphasizes that US Cold War music propaganda programs were not an entirely new initiative but built on the foundations laid in the 1940s. By demonstrating that a peripheral country used music as a tool for political negotiations with a superpower, this project also expands the horizons of scholarship on music propaganda, which has focused overwhelmingly on US and Soviet interventions in Europe. -

ABSTRACT Gajung (House) Church Ministry as a Renewal Movement for Korean Protestant Church - Focusing on the Ministry of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas After Protestant missionaries came to the Korean peninsula in 1884, the Christian faith began to spread among Koreans, and Korean Protestant churches started to grow. During the modernization and industrialization of Korean society beginning in the 1960s, Korean Protestantism even saw the emergence of mega-churches like Yoido Full Gospel Church, Kwanglim Methodist Church, and Myungsung Presbyterian Church. Many people from both inside and outside the churches, however, currently criticize Korean churches. Critics even derided Christians who during their mission trip to Afghanistan in 2007 were kidnapped and killed by the Taliban. This research focuses on how to renew Korean churches through Gajung (House) church ministry as a response to the current situation of Korean Protestant churches. Chapter one introduces the statement of the problem, research questions, the theoretical framework, and the research methodology of this case study of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas, USA, (SBCH) and three other local churches in Korea participating in the same Gajung church ministry. Chapter Two outlines Korean church history from the earliest contact with the Christian faith, even before the coming of the first official missionary, the efforts to spread the gospel, and the remarkable church growth and the efforts promoting discipleship. Finally, the chapter discuses the need for church renewal in Korean Protestant churches in terms of socio-phenomenological and theological concerns. Chapter Three outlines the basic philosophy of Gajung church ministry of SBCH.
