Gajung (House) Church Ministry As a Renewal Movement for Korean Protestant Church - Focusing on the Ministry of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas ABSTRACT Gajung (House) Church Ministry as a Renewal Movement for Korean Protestant Church - Focusing on the Ministry of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas After Protestant missionaries came to the Korean peninsula in 1884, the Christian faith began to spread among Koreans, and Korean Protestant churches started to grow. During the modernization and industrialization of Korean society beginning in the 1960s, Korean Protestantism even saw the emergence of mega-churches like Yoido Full Gospel Church, Kwanglim Methodist Church, and Myungsung Presbyterian Church. Many people from both inside and outside the churches, however, currently criticize Korean churches. Critics even derided Christians who during their mission trip to Afghanistan in 2007 were kidnapped and killed by the Taliban. This research focuses on how to renew Korean churches through Gajung (House) church ministry as a response to the current situation of Korean Protestant churches. Chapter one introduces the statement of the problem, research questions, the theoretical framework, and the research methodology of this case study of Seoul Baptist Church of Houston, Texas, USA, (SBCH) and three other local churches in Korea participating in the same Gajung church ministry. Chapter Two outlines Korean church history from the earliest contact with the Christian faith, even before the coming of the first official missionary, the efforts to spread the gospel, and the remarkable church growth and the efforts promoting discipleship. Finally, the chapter discuses the need for church renewal in Korean Protestant churches in terms of socio-phenomenological and theological concerns. Chapter Three outlines the basic philosophy of Gajung church ministry of SBCH. This ministry has, as core values, three axes (Sunday Corporate Worship, Gajung church meeting, and Life Bible Study) and four pillars (Saving souls and making disciples as raison d'être of the Church [Matt. 28:19-20], Discipleship Training with Demonstrations [Mark 3:14-15], Biblical Distribution of Church Ministry with lay people [Eph. 4:11-12], and Servant leadership [Mark 10:43-45]). As communities pursuing the recovery of the first century church’s faith community, Gajung church ministry seeks balance among the whole congregation, the Gajung church meeting, and Life Bible Study. For historical background and perspective comparisons between this ministry and early Methodism, Missional church, Organic church, Fresh Expression, and Cell church perspectives are provided. Chapters Four and Five provide analysis demonstrating that this Gajung church ministry, as a renewal movement, has strong signs of having the ten marks of the mediating model of Howard Snyder. The ministry shows 1) the rediscovery of the gospel in terms of relationship with God and other people, 2) the existence of Mokjang church as eccelsiola, 3) Mokjang as small group gathering, 4) Mokjang with a structural link with a local church (for instance, SBCH) and with denomination as an institutional church, 5) commitment to the unity and wholeness of the larger church by participating in various ministries of local churches and in providing seminars and conferences, 6) mission orientation for reaching VIPs (Very Important Person denoting the non-believers in this ministry) and spreading the ministry among other churches, 7) Mokjang as a distinct community of an extended family for mutual love and fellowship, 8) Mokjang as the field to practice care for each other, to reach non-believers, and to raise new leaders, 9) contacting others and the poor, and 10) emphasis on the Bible and the Spirit through Bible study, worship services, and prayers. Chapter Six explains how hospitality through Mokjang leaders and members open the hearts of the VIPs (non-believers). The three elements of Aristotelian ethos were confirmed in this ministry: through serving activities in Mokjang, VIPs experience love and sacrifice in those serving activities (virtue) that are needed in the particular situation (practical wisdom) for their spiritual and physical benefit (good will). In addition, by serving others, the members in this ministry experience their personal growth in faith through the desire to resemble Jesus in the ministry and in their character. Chapter Seven addresses the missiological implications for Korean Protestant churches, suggesting that 1) Gajung church ministry helps Korean churches to have a new understanding of evangelism in terms of kingdom growth instead of church growth, 2) Gajung church ministry gives a new paradigm for discipleship in Korean churches by recovering hospitality as the Christian habit through serving others, 3) Gajung church ministry gives a more developed picture of relationship among the churches in their network, 4) Gajung church ministry provides the possibility of being missional where they are, beyond the boundary of Gajung church, and 5) Gajung church ministry addresses the tendency of seeking material blessings in the Korean churches.     ABSTRACT Effective Evangelistic Strategies for North Korean Defectors (Talbukmin) in South Korea South Korean churches eagerness for spreading the gospel to North Koreans is a passion. However, because of the barriers between the two Koreas, spreading the Good News is nearly impossible. In the middle of the 1990’s, numerous North Koreans defected to China to avoid starvation. Many South Korean missionaries met North Koreans directly and offered the gospel along with necessities for survival in China. Since the early of 2000’s, many Talbukmin have entered South Korea so South Korean churches have directly met North Koreans and spread the gospel. However, the fruits of evangelism are few. South Korean churches find that Talbukmin are very different from South Koreans in large part due to the sixty-year division. South Korean churches do not know or fully understand the characteristics of the Talbukmin. The evangelism strategies and ministry programs of South Korean churches, which are designed for South Koreans, do not adapt well to serve the Talbukmin. This research lists and describes the following five theories to be used in the development of the effective evangelistic strategies for use with the Talbukmin and for use to interpret the interviews and questionnaires: the conversion theory, the contextualization theory, the homogenous principle, the worldview transformation theory, and the Nevius Mission Plan. In the following research exploration of the evangelization of Talbukmin in South Korea occurs through two major research agendas. The first agenda is concerned with the study of the characteristics of Talbukmin to be used for the evangelists’ understanding of the depth of differences.

ABSTRACT This study provides a new theological approach for interpreting the Non- Church Movement (NCM) in Korea. Previous studies have been written from a historical perspective. Therefore, an examination of the spirituality and characteristics of the NCM from a theological standpoint is a new approach. The present study investigates the connection between the NCM and Confucianism. It attempts to highlight the influence of Confucian spirituality on the NCM, in particular the Confucian tradition of learning. It also examines the link between the NCM and Quakerism, in particular the influence of Quaker ecclesiology on the NCM. This too has not been examined in previous studies. The thesis argues that the theological roots of NCM ecclesiology lie in the relatively flat ecclesiology of the Quaker movement in the USA.

Through the cases of Horace and Ethel Underwood, this paper illustrates that the missionary role in the US military government, Korean society, and Korean state formation must be understood from within the complexities of missionary experience under colonialism, approaches to missions and society, and the personal histories of missionaries with Korea. Beginning with conflicts within the Presbyterian missions in Korea and rooted in Horace Underwood’s pre-colonial Korean childhood, both Underwoods became committed to Korean autonomy and sovereignty, a stance which guided their interactions with their mission and with the American military government. In those interactions they displayed confidence in the promise of a liberal democratic society in Korea as they urged their colleagues to seek and to defer to Korean opinion. Wary of both communism and the authoritarianism displayed in the early Syngman Rhee administration, their words and actions demonstrated a strong faith in the potential of Koreans to forge and participate actively in a vibrant, open, liberal society. A new species of church is emerging throughout North America. Hungry for community and relationship, people are learning the values of the kingdom by first-hand participation. They meet in small groups in homes, offices, boardrooms or restaurants. For them church has become a way of life where discipleship and growth occurs naturally as everyone develops their gifts and “learns by doing,” under the mentorship of spiritual fathers and mothers. Within the next ten to fifteen years, I believe these new house church networks will dot the landscape of North America just as they already do in other nations of the world. They are called house churches because each one functions as a little church. They are networks because they work together to foster accountability and encouragement. The New Testament church was defined as the people. Believers did not go to church or join the church; they were the church. All members functioned as priests because everyone served as ministers. Each person got on-the-job training and learned how to make disciples. These followers of Christ practiced their faith in spiritual families, met in homes and radically changed their world. The constant need for new wineskins New wineskins are continually needed to accommodate the believers who do not fit into the current church structures. It didn’t take long to conclude that we must find ways to plant new churches (new wineskins) and begin the process of handing over the reins to the next generation.

Cha* Introduction The phrase “unequal treaties” and term extraterritoriality are evocative, conveying more than simply the stale concepts that treaties are unequal or that foreigners are not subject to local laws. Indeed, observing that nearly alltreaties are inherently unequal, Dong Wang, a scholar of China who has written extensively on the topic of unequal treaties and popular historical memory in China, has noted that during the twentieth century the phrase unequal treaties and term extraterritoriality have served both to refer to China’s history of past humiliation and as a clarion call for various socio-political mobilization projects in the country. 1 Likewise, these concepts hold a degree of symbolic meaning in Korea. In particular, they often refer to the weakness of the Chosŏn government during the “open ports” period, paint a picture of rapacious Western and Japanese nations hungering to devour the peninsula, and serve as harbingers of Korea’s pending colonization and division. To a degree, all of these characterizations are accurate and have advanced our understanding of late-nineteenth century Korea.
