Fass, Chair This dissertation examines the career of Horace Newton Allen, an American physician who became the first Protestant missionary to reside in Chosŏn Korea. It focuses specifically on the initial decade of his tenure on the peninsula (1884-1894), the period when he transitioned from a participant of the Protestant foreign mission movement to a member of the American diplomatic service. These years also comprised the formative era of relations between the United States and Korea. Through a close look at Allen’s work and activities, this study uses his story as window into the broader dynamics of the early American-Korean encounter. And to my comrade in everything else, David Kyung-il Park: Thank you for reminding me daily of the best things. iii Introduction Few names are more recognizable to students of early American-Korean relations than that of Horace Newton Allen. And for good reason. During the twenty years the angular, bespectacled physician from Ohio lived in Chosŏn Korea, he supervised the kingdom’s first Western-style hospital and medical school, cultivated close ties with the monarch, helped secure gold mining and other concessions for American business, played a central role in Korean migration to Hawaii, and, for nearly a decade, served as the United States ambassador in Seoul. As historian Wayne Patterson summarizes, “In the one hundred years since Korea was opened to the West no foreigner became more involved in Korea’s affairs than Horace Allen.”1 Yet despite Allen’s significance to the late-nineteenth-century encounter between the United States and Korea, little has been written in depth about this missionary-turned- diplomat. Fred Harvey Harrington’s God, Mammon, and the Japanese, published more than half a century ago (and at a moment, Harrington later noted, when there was so paltry an interest in Korea that he decided to omit its name from the main title), remains the single, classic work.2 At the same time, however, Allen continues to be the favored reference in general discussions about early US involvement on the peninsula. It is as if he has been cloaked, one could say, in a kind of superficial ubiquity. A few reasons might account for these trends. On the one hand, though part of Allen’s historical importance lies in his having been the first Protestant missionary to reside in Korea, his record is not exactly the stuff of missionary hagiography. His fewer than five years as a Presbyterian mission agent shrink when compared to the multiple decades others gave to the mission endeavor. But it was not only time; it was also the contentiousness of his tenure. In fact some of the most biting criticism of Horace Allen— for example, that he was never a “real” or genuine missionary—have come from those directly involved in or sympathetic to the Protestant mission cause.3 On the other hand, Allen has also been portrayed, often in broad strokes, not as an exception but as an exemplar—as a representative embodiment of America’s growing 1 Wayne Patterson, “Sugar-Coated Diplomacy: Horace Allen and Korean Immigration to Hawaii, 1902- 1905,” Diplomatic History 3 (winter 1979): 19. 2 Fred Harvey Harrington, God, Mammon, and the Japanese: Dr. Horace N. In particular he has attracted arguments about how the United States’ outward religious, economic, and political impulses were intimately, even indistinctly, interconnected. One of the consequences of this assumption has been a flattening of Allen into a single-dimensional figure, and one not always entirely believable. In turn his range of activities, too, can collapse into a monolithic illustration of American expansionism.4 This dissertation is an attempt to begin reconstructing and reexamining Horace Allen’s remarkable career. It concentrates on the first ten years of his connection to Korea (1884-1894), the period when he transitioned from a participant of the Protestant foreign mission enterprise to a member of the American diplomatic service. These were foundational, at times greatly unsettling, years for Allen. They are also, I believe, the most misunderstood. Indeed in contrast to impressions that from the outset Allen was a freewheeling opportunist—someone who, as one historian described, “nicely combined his Presbyterian missionary dedication with a robber-baron passion for making money”— the evidence reveals a more complicated story.5 Allen himself was a person of varied characteristics. He was ambitious and self- conscious, cantankerous and persevering, adroit and evasive. He seemed to make enemies almost as easily as he made friends. The primary concern here is not, however, Allen’s personality, though intriguing in its own right and obviously fundamental to his decision- making. While its focus lies on one person, this study is intended to be less a biography than an exploration of the circumstances, events, and ideas that shaped Allen’s choices and actions. A fresh look at his first decade, I would argue, will allow us not only a clearer picture of his career on the peninsula, but also greater insight into the early US- Korea relationship. Horace Allen arrived in Seoul, the capital of the Chosŏn dynasty, during one of the most turbulent periods in modern Korean history. The last of the major states in East Asia to sign treaties with the West, the kingdom also faced peculiar challenges as it confronted a collapsing Sinocentric world order. Like other countries in the region, Korea witnessed firsthand the manifestations of the Western intrusion into Asia starting in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet in part because of its ideological resilience, the peninsula was able to avoid entering into the modern international system—a system based, in theory, on individually equal states—until the century’s last quarter.

    ABSTRACT Effective Evangelistic Strategies for North Korean Defectors (Talbukmin) in South Korea South Korean churches eagerness for spreading the gospel to North Koreans is a passion. However, because of the barriers between the two Koreas, spreading the Good News is nearly impossible. In the middle of the 1990’s, numerous North Koreans defected to China to avoid starvation. Many South Korean missionaries met North Koreans directly and offered the gospel along with necessities for survival in China. Since the early of 2000’s, many Talbukmin have entered South Korea so South Korean churches have directly met North Koreans and spread the gospel. However, the fruits of evangelism are few. South Korean churches find that Talbukmin are very different from South Koreans in large part due to the sixty-year division. South Korean churches do not know or fully understand the characteristics of the Talbukmin. The evangelism strategies and ministry programs of South Korean churches, which are designed for South Koreans, do not adapt well to serve the Talbukmin. This research lists and describes the following five theories to be used in the development of the effective evangelistic strategies for use with the Talbukmin and for use to interpret the interviews and questionnaires: the conversion theory, the contextualization theory, the homogenous principle, the worldview transformation theory, and the Nevius Mission Plan. In the following research exploration of the evangelization of Talbukmin in South Korea occurs through two major research agendas. The first agenda is concerned with the study of the characteristics of Talbukmin to be used for the evangelists’ understanding of the depth of differences.

The First Beginnings The Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch was born at 4:30 pm on June 16, 1900, when a founding meeting attended by seventeen men (all but four of them missionaries) was held in the Reading Room of the Seoul Union Club. On that day officers were elected and a constitution (based on that of the London RAS) was adopted. Among those present were the acting British Chargé d’affaires, J. H. Gubbins, and the missionaries James S. Gale, Homer B. Hulbert, George Heber Jones, Horace G. Underwood, H. G. Appenzeller, D. A. Bunker and William B. Scranton. Other missionaries who were members of the RASKB from the very start included H. N. Allen, O. R. Avison and M. N. Trollope. The first paper presented to the Society, on “The Influence of China upon Korea,” was given by James Scarth Gale on October 24, 1900 and it was the first paper published in Volume One of Transactions a few months later. It stressed the overwhelming influence of Chinese culture on Korea. The second paper, by Homer B. Hulbert, on “Korean Survivals,” sought to contradict it and stress the role of native Korean traditions and values. In the two years that followed, seven more lectures were given and 2 more volumes of Transactions were published. But, after a final lecture about Ginseng at the end of 1902 and the publication of Volume 3 of Transactions soon after, everything stopped.

ABSTRACT This study provides a new theological approach for interpreting the Non- Church Movement (NCM) in Korea. Previous studies have been written from a historical perspective. Therefore, an examination of the spirituality and characteristics of the NCM from a theological standpoint is a new approach. The present study investigates the connection between the NCM and Confucianism. It attempts to highlight the influence of Confucian spirituality on the NCM, in particular the Confucian tradition of learning. It also examines the link between the NCM and Quakerism, in particular the influence of Quaker ecclesiology on the NCM. This too has not been examined in previous studies. The thesis argues that the theological roots of NCM ecclesiology lie in the relatively flat ecclesiology of the Quaker movement in the USA.

Through the cases of Horace and Ethel Underwood, this paper illustrates that the missionary role in the US military government, Korean society, and Korean state formation must be understood from within the complexities of missionary experience under colonialism, approaches to missions and society, and the personal histories of missionaries with Korea. Beginning with conflicts within the Presbyterian missions in Korea and rooted in Horace Underwood’s pre-colonial Korean childhood, both Underwoods became committed to Korean autonomy and sovereignty, a stance which guided their interactions with their mission and with the American military government. In those interactions they displayed confidence in the promise of a liberal democratic society in Korea as they urged their colleagues to seek and to defer to Korean opinion. Wary of both communism and the authoritarianism displayed in the early Syngman Rhee administration, their words and actions demonstrated a strong faith in the potential of Koreans to forge and participate actively in a vibrant, open, liberal society. George Clayton Foulk, the 1st Naval Attaché to the United States Legation and the 2nd U.S. Minister to Korea, brought his intellectual ability and passion to this East Asian country. He hoped for Korea to become an independent, modernized state. Due to the strong Chinese opposition and lack of assistance from the U.S. government, Foulk failed to realize his dream and left Korea in disgrace. However, his service instilled a positive image of America in the minds of many Koreans. By closely examining his letters and journals, this thesis brings an image of a cosmopolitan who expressed genuine understanding of and sympathy for Korea. More importantly, this thesis introduces his vision that America must become an exceptional country which spreads its values across the world through peaceful means.

Cha* Introduction The phrase “unequal treaties” and term extraterritoriality are evocative, conveying more than simply the stale concepts that treaties are unequal or that foreigners are not subject to local laws. Indeed, observing that nearly alltreaties are inherently unequal, Dong Wang, a scholar of China who has written extensively on the topic of unequal treaties and popular historical memory in China, has noted that during the twentieth century the phrase unequal treaties and term extraterritoriality have served both to refer to China’s history of past humiliation and as a clarion call for various socio-political mobilization projects in the country. 1 Likewise, these concepts hold a degree of symbolic meaning in Korea. In particular, they often refer to the weakness of the Chosŏn government during the “open ports” period, paint a picture of rapacious Western and Japanese nations hungering to devour the peninsula, and serve as harbingers of Korea’s pending colonization and division. To a degree, all of these characterizations are accurate and have advanced our understanding of late-nineteenth century Korea.     St. Simon Berneux Catholic.net The Korean Martyrs were the victims of religious persecution against Catholic Christians during the 19th century in Korea. At least 8,000 (as many as 10,000) adherents to the faith were killed during this period, 103 of whom were canonized en masse in May 1984. Paul Yun Ji-Chung and 123 companions were declared "Venerable" on February 7, 2014, and on August 16, 2014, they were beatified by Pope Francis during the Asian Youth Day in Gwanghwamun Plaza, Seoul, South Korea. There are further moves to beatify Catholics who were killed by communists for their faith in the 20th century during the Korean War. Background At the end of the 18th century Korea was a country ruled by the Joseon Dynasty. It was a society based on Confucianism with its hierarchical, class relationships. There was a small minority of privileged scholars and nobility while the majority were commoners paying taxes, providing labour and manning the military. Below them was the slave class. Even though it was scholars who first introduced the Gospel to Korea, it was the ordinary people who flocked to the new religion. The new believers called themselves "Chonju kyo udul" literally "friends of the teaching of God of Heaven". The term "friends" was the only term in the Confucian understanding of relationships which implied equality. History During the early 17th century, Christian literature written in Chinese was imported from China to Korea. On one of these occasions, around 1777, Christian literature obtained from Jesuits in China led educated Korean Christians to study.
