Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ.-Ի ԳԼԵՆԴԵԼԻ ԱՐԱՐԱՏ ՄԱՍՆԱՃԻՒՂԻ ՄՇԱԿՈՒԹԱՅԻՆ ԲԱԺԱՆՄՈՒNՔ Homenetmen Glendale Ararat Chapter Cultural Division Get to Know… Volume 2, Issue 10 October 2009 KHACHATOUR ABOVIAN October 15, 1809 – April 14, 1848 Khachatur Abovian was an Armenian writer and national public figure of the early 19th century who mysteriously vanished in 1848 and was presumed dead. He was an educator, poet and an advocate of modernization. Considered as the father of modern Armenian literature, he is best remembered for his novel Verk Hayastani (Wounds of Armenia), which set the trend in both style and genre for subsequent literature. Written in 1841 and published posthumously in 1858 it was the first novel published in the modern Armenian language utilizing the eastern Armenian dialect instead of classical Armenian. Abovian was born in 1809 in the village of Kanakar, now a suburb of Yerevan. At the age of ten his father took him to Echmiadzin to study for priesthood at the Gevorgian seminary in Echmiadzin. Abovian dropped out after five years and moved to Tiflis in 1822 to study Armenian studies and languages at the Nersisyan college. He graduated in 1826 and began preparing to move to Venice to further his education but the outbreak of the Russo-Persian war of 1826-1828 cut his plans. For the next three years Abovian taught briefly at Sanahin and then became employed by Catholicos Yeprem as his clerk and translator. The turning point in his life was the arrival in Armenia of Friedrich Parrot in September 1829, a professor of natural philosophy from the University of Dorpat in Lithonia. -

Riegg: Claiming the Caucasus: Russia’s Imperial Encounter with Armenians, 1801-1894 (Under the direction of Louise McReynolds) My dissertation questions the relationship between the Russian empire and the Armenian diaspora that populated Russia’s territorial fringes and navigated the tsarist state’s metropolitan centers. I argue that Russia harnessed the stateless and dispersed Armenian diaspora to build its empire in the Caucasus and beyond. Russia relied on the stature of the two most influential institutions of that diaspora, the merchantry and the clergy, to project diplomatic power from Constantinople to Copenhagen; to benefit economically from the transimperial trade networks of Armenian merchants in Russia, Persia, and Turkey; and to draw political advantage from the Armenian Church’s extensive authority within that nation. Moving away from traditional dichotomies of power and resistance, this dissertation examines how Russia relied on foreign-subject Armenian peasants and elites to colonize the South Caucasus, thereby rendering Armenians both agents and recipients of European imperialism. Religion represented a defining link in the Russo-Armenian encounter and therefore shapes the narrative of my project. Driven by a shared ecumenical identity as adherents of Orthodox Christianity, Armenians embraced Russian patronage in the early nineteenth century to escape social and political marginalization in the Persian and Ottoman empires. -

2007 - YEAR OF THE ARMENIAN LANGUAGE PONTIFICAL MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS ARAM I CATHOLICOS OF THE GREAT HOUSE OF CILICIA (click here for Armenian version) To the Diocesan Prelates, Clergy, and Church and Community Leaders of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, and the Armenian people, We greet you with pontifical blessing and warm Christian love from the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in Antelias, and we wish you a year full of divine grace, as well as rich in spiritual and national accomplishments. The year of 2006 in the life of our people was characterized by the pan-national observance of the 1600th anniversary of the invention of the Armenian alphabet. In our Pontifical Encyclical issued on that occasion, we addressed the vital importance of the Armenian language embodied in the Armenian alphabet, saying, “In the face of the frightful forces of globalization, which assimilates cultures, destroys communities, annihilates values and alters identities, the Armenian language must become, above all, a sacred forge of nation building and mighty shield of national self-defense for our people. It must remain a vital factor authentically expressing and comprehensively giving shape to the palpitations of our hearts, the flights of our souls and the conceptions of our minds. Furthermore, the Armenian language must become the unbreakable axis of the national belongingness and the strong cement of unity of our people scattered to all parts of the world.” In consideration of the 1600th anniversary of the invention of the Armenian alphabet, we proclaimed the year of 2006 as “Year of the Armenian School.” In response to our appeal, the Armenian school, along with its sacred mission of forming our men and women of the future as Armenians, was made the focal point of special programs in all dioceses of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia. -

In this context, the present paper deals with one of the most interesting periods in the history of the city. From the beginning of the 19th century, when the establishment of the Russian imperial rule started in the Caucasus, Tbilisi became an official political center of the region; political and economic changes, occurring during the second half of the 19th century, significantly influenced ethnic and religious composition of Tbilisi, its cultural lifetime and mode of life in general. For centuries-long period, Tbilisi, like other big cities (how much big does not matter in this case), was not only the Georgian city in ethnic terms; but also, it represented a blend of different religious and ethnic groups. Not only in a distant past, but just a couple of decades ago, when the phenomenon of the so called ‘city yards’ (which are often called as ‘Italian yards’ and which have almost disappeared from the city landscape) still existed in Tbilisi, their residents spoke several languages fluently. Ethnically and religiously mixed families were not rare. Such type of cities, termed as Cosmo-policies by some researchers, has an ability to transform a visitor, at least temporarily, into a member of “in-group”, in our case – into Tbilisian. -
