Title of Thesis/Project/Extended Essay Hidden on the Farm: Remembrances of a Ukrainian Canadian Immigrant Farm Woman Author: - - (Signature) Pamela Joan Sinclair (Name) ABSTRACT Until recently, there have been few published works on the roles women played in the settling of Canada. Mainstream historians have, for the most part, ignored women's roles as homesteaders, wives, mothers, and immigrant farmers. Women from marginalized groups with a vast array of their experiences, lived in the process of nation-building, have been rendered virtually invisible. The focus of this work is on my own grandmother, a Ukrainian-Canadian immigrant farm woman. My grandmother's stories illustrate the importance women had in the settlement of Canada. Their contributions have remained undervalued in historical records. This work provides the ethnohistorical record with the voice of a Ukrainian immigrant female. Such stories are unavailable in most historical archives. This study employs a particular form of case study - the life history. This approach builds on an individual's account of their own life situation. Using this approach, I met with my grandmother during the fall of 1988 to tape record conversations about her life. Her stories generated three general themes related to her understanding and perceptions of her experience as an immigrant farm woman. The first is related to her work which encompassed domestic labour and production labour on the farm, as well as paid employment when necessary. Secondly, she discussed issues that immigrant women still face today related to immigration policy, racism, and isolation. Finally, she discussed the importance of the extended family. Her stories illustrate that for immigrant farm women like her, there was no gendered division of labour on the farm in the way that we think of the division of labour today. The narratives of her experiences demonstrate the interrelationship of gender, class, and ethnicity experienced by my grandmother as a new immigrant - to Canada at the beginning of this century. ... 111 The implications of this work in education are related to two areas. The history curriculum at all levels should include the contributions immigrant women made in the settlement of Canada. School counsellors like myself who become aware of their own ethnic background can become more sensitive to the needs of children immigrating to Canada.     Ukrainian language in Canada: From prosperity to extinction? Khrystyna Hudyma University of Saskatchewan In this paper I want to explore in what way and due to what factors the Ukrainian language in Canada evolved from being a mother tongue for one of the biggest country’s ethnic groups to just an ethnic language hardly spoken by younger generations. Ukrainian was brought to the country by peasant settlers from Western Ukraine at the end of the 19th century; therefore, it is one of the oldest heritage languages in Canada. Three subsequent waves of Ukrainian immigration supplied language retention; however had their own language-related peculiarities. Initially, the Ukrainian language in Canada differed from standard Ukrainian, with the pace of time and under influence of the English language they diverged even more. Profound changes on phonetic, lexical and grammatical levels allow some scholars to consider Canadian Ukrainian an established dialect of standard Ukrainian. Once one of the best maintained mother tongues in Canada, today Ukrainian experiences a significant drop in number of native speakers and use at home, as well as faces a persistent failure of transmission to the next generation. Although, numerous efforts are made to maintain Ukrainian in Canada, i.e. bilingual schools, summer camps, university courses, the young generation of Ukrainian Canadians learn it as a foreign language and limit its use to family and school settings. Such tendency fosters language shift and puts Canadian Ukrainian on the brink of extinction in the nearest future. 1 Introduction The first records of immigrants arriving from the territory of modern Ukraine to Canada go back to 1892, and thus, have more than a century of history.

    Volume 3.1 / Fall 2016 Differences and Similarities in Attitudes towards Intellectual and Visual Culture within the Ukrainian-Canadian Community in Edmonton, Alberta.1 Susanna M. Lynn Abstract Ukrainian-Canadians are a relatively well-established group in Canada. This paper draws on data gathered from ten interviews about ethnic identity discourses which I conducted with new and established members of the Ukrainian-Canadian community in Edmonton, Alberta. Using critical discourse analysis, I investigate the responses to nine of the original thirty-seven interview questions, which included two ranking questions; these questions inquired about participants’ opinions and evaluations of [Ukrainian] literature, language, music and important “kinds” and aspects of culture. Responses exposed some of the similarities and differences in attitudes the two groups held towards intellectual and visual culture, highlighting the evolving nature of this community, and providing detail that enhances understanding of these attitudes. I present key arguments as to why these similarities and differences may, at least in part, correlate to the unique socio-cultural environments in which each group has been developing culture since Ukraine’s Independence. In particular, I posit that “the linguistic factor” (a term I use to summarize the interconnected influence that language, literature, and linguistic ability have on each other) is one of the most salient forces in shaping and informing these similarities and differences in attitudes towards intellectual and visual culture. 1 This research received support from the Shevchenko Scientific Society of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).     The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies: Foundations Volodymyr Kravchenko University of Alberta Abstract: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) became the second academic institution in the Western world to fully specialize in exploring Ukrainian history, culture, and current affairs after the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI). Establishment of the CIUS in Edmonton was not predetermined. There were other ideas and competing projects with regard to place, profile, and institutional model of Ukrainian studies in Canada. Edmonton became a winner due to a unique combination of Western regionalism, multiculturalism, the makeup of the Ukrainian local community, and the personal qualities of that community’s leaders. Contrary to widespread opinion, the CIUS did not copy the institutional model of the HURI. The CIUS model is unique, as it embraces a broad, interdisciplinary research agenda, and community-oriented activities related to education and culture.
