The ACU was originally called the Ukrainian Society for Aid to the Motherland (USAM) which was established on July 26, 1941. The primary goal of USAM was the provision of support and material assistance to the Soviet Union after the Nazi German attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Membership was drawn from former members of the Ukrainian Labour and Farmer Temple Association (ULFTA) which was banned by the federal government on June 4, 1940 along with the Communist Party of Canada and affiliated societies and organizations. The name of USAM was changed to the Association of Canadian Ukrainians (ACU) in June, 1942. After the end of the Second World War, the ACU continued the work of the ULFTA and had expanded their activities into almost all Ukrainian communities in Canada. By the 1950's, the AUUC had branches in most Ukrainian communities across Canada and the national headquarters were in Toronto. These branches included women, junior and English-speaking branches. Plans and activities were initiated and monitored at the National Conventions held every two years. A national executive was elected at that time which formed the national executive committee (NEC). In western provinces, provincial conventions were held and provincial executives were elected. In most provinces, district and local committees were also elected. During the early years, the language of communication was Ukrainian however, many branches especially those in western Canada began to conduct their activities in English and for this purpose English-speaking branches were created. The NEC of the AUUC communicated with provincial, district and branches and individual members through correspondence and the NEC circulars. This correspondence forms the core of this Association of United Ukrainian Canadian Fonds and correspondence is found throughout the Fonds. The NEC of the AUUC also communicated with their membership and the larger Ukrainian Canadian community through the Ukrainian-language newspapers Ukrainske Zhyttia, Ukrainske Slovo and the English-language periodical, The Ukrainian Canadian. The AUUC preserved and promoted the Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada and undertook various language and cultural projects for this purpose. These activities were mainly in the area of Ukrainian song, dance and performing arts and were conducted in their halls and in some cases at the AUUC summer camps. The cultural activities attracted new and younger members and helped to maintain their older membership. Since there was practically no immigration directly from Soviet Ukraine after the Second World War, almost all of the AUUC recruitment of new members was from Canadian-born Ukrainians. In the 1970's and 1980's, dance instructors and performers were invited from Soviet Ukraine to conduct seminars and workshops and participate in cultural events in Canada. In other cases, students were sent to Soviet Ukraine to learn and improve their language and artistic skills. Tour groups to the Soviet Ukraine were promoted to encourage closer contacts with the country of origin and familiarize Ukrainian Canadians with the history and culture of Soviet Ukraine. There were a number of organizations and enterprises associated with the AUUC such as the Workers Benevolent Association (WBA), Ukrainska Knyha, Globe Tours and others. The AUUC worked closely with other national and international organizations which pursued the same goals and activities such as the Canadian Peace Congress, Society Ukraina and the World
