HITCHING The Shore’S only locally owned newSpaper Chincoteague Storytelling Guild Story Swap Theme is Nature Submitted Article The Chincoteague Storytelling Guild is hosting its monthly Story Swap on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., at the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance (CCA) building, 6309 Church St. The theme for the evening is “Nature.” At every Story Swap, members of the audience are invited to share a short story to the crowd. This gathering provides a welcoming environment and safe space to try out the craft of storytelling. Each Story Swap this year has been bigger and more fun than the last, with a record turnout in August. So get the creative juices flowing and come join in the fun. In September, experienced members of the guild will be sharing stories about camping trips gone awry, learning how to dig for clams, surprise spider visits, and more. The host for the evening, Sarah Mason, will be telling a story about climbing trees. The success of each Story Swap relies on en- thusiastic audience participation. These monthly events are offered free of charge, including free refreshments, and occur on the last Friday of the month, March through October. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the storytelling begins promptly at 7 p.m. To celebrate Halloween, the final Storytelling Guild Event in 2018 is on Oct. 26. The third annual Spooky Stories event will be held outside around a fire and feature creepy crawly ghost tales. And there will be treats. For more information, visit https:// www.chincoteagueca.org

Submitted Article The museum is off and running with plans for Heritage Days 2019 exhibits and programs. The museum partners with many of the Chincoteague Island groups and nonprofits to bring a fun and educational opening weekend in March. The theme this year, chosen by local resident Nancy Lane, will be Historic Downtown Chincoteague. The museum is requesting old photographs of buildings, businesses, and events down- town. The museum will use the memorabilia for research and exhibits. Home movies of downtown are also accepted. On October 9, at 10 a.m., anyone with stories, memories, photo- graphs, or home movies can join others at the museum for a roundtable discussion of downtown Chincoteague. For those with questions about the event or to lend photographs or movies, contact the Museum of Chin- coteague Island’s Executive Director Maria Grenchik, at 336-6117. The Way I See It A Coastal Disturbance By Dan Hillman Dear Editor: The following is an essay response to the Assateague Refuge Manage- ment Plan/Public Beach Relocation. A Come-Here to this little island, a “mane” runs through it. Sea grasses sway and tides are persevering. Early evening quiet and winds a-gust. A line of lights narrow and vessels tied up for the evening. The public drives, walks and bikes to their morning destination. Through the wood, to the other side, the jour- ney’s trek is captured. Chargers and marsh offer an image. Salt air swirls and waves break onto the face while crabs and chairs speckle the shore. The dunes piled up again and again, without enough time to take root. A lit- tle girl runs barefoot up and over toward the water closet. Four wheel drives and rods squeak by. Sand like sugar offers a challenge. Abandoned structures and relaxed minds with an old storm breach beneath your feet. Let us move this journey to another end. Let the dunes again be trodden and the sea- grass circled. Push the shell and smooth the ripples. Another vine wraps through al- ternative wood. Turtles duck and deer look up. To what toll will we be assembled? Claude S.
