Mēģinot izprast šī noklusējuma iemeslus, Outka atbildi rod Pirmā pasaules kara tēmas dominēšanā 20. gadsimta sākuma sociālajā, kultūras un arī ikdienas diskursā. Viņasprāt, karš tika uzskatīts par vīrišķīgu un jēgpilnu, jo jaunu vīriešu nāve kaujas laukā bija upuris, kas atbrīvoja pasauli no ļaunuma. Turpretī mirstība no gripas bija “mazāk drosmīga, sievišķīgāka nāves forma”.1 Karavīram nāve no šķietami vien- kāršas un salīdzinoši viegli pārslimojamas kaites laupīja viņa “likumīgo iespēju nomirt kaujā”.2 Ja nāve karā bija varonīga, tad nāve no gripas bija neveiksme. Vēl vairāk, svinot nežēlīgā kara beigas, šāda nāve, jādomā, tika uzskatīta par absolūti bezjēdzīgu un pēc iespējas ātrāk aizmirstamu. Nāve, kuras iemesls bija nevis ienaidnieka lode vai durklis, bet gan nejauša tikšanās ar slimu cilvēku, bieži draugu vai ģimenes lokā, ne tikai paspilgtināja spāņu gripas pandēmijas jau tā absurdo uzvaras gājienu, bet 1 Šeit un turpmāk izmantoti secinājumi no darba: Yingying Tang. RFR 28.indd 5 07/12/20 15:06 Reliģiski-filozofiski raksti XXVIII 6 arī radīja izdzīvojušajos “neizdzēšamas vainas sajūtu”, no kuras atbrīvoties varēja, vienīgi to aizmirstot. Atšķirībā no kaujas karalaukā, kaujā ar spāņu gripu uzvarētāju nebija. Bija tikai zaudētāji: tie, kuri bija apglabājuši savus radiniekus un draugus; tie, kuri jutās vainīgi, ka izdzīvojuši vai ka bijuši līdzvainīgi citu nāvēs; tie, kuri nespēja palīdzēt šiem pandēmijas upuriem. Tomēr izrādījās, ka spāņu gripas pandēmijas izraisīto masu nāvi un ar to saistīto bezjēdzīgumu un vainas sajūtu nav tik viegli izdzēst nedz no cilvēku, nedz kultūras atmiņas. Analizējot 20. gadsimta starpkaru laika literatūru, Outka pārliecinoši rāda, ka šie mēģinājumi aizmirst pārtapa tikpat izmisīgos mēģinājumos sadzīvot ar šīm halucinogēnajām nāves klāt- būtnes sajūtām un veicināja spiritisma un zombiju kultūras uzplaukumu, “piedāvājot modernajam laikmetam kvazi-sekulārus un pseidozinātniskus augšāmcelšanās modeļus”.3 Līdz ar šiem modeļiem Rietumu kultūra svi- nēja arī nāves atgriešanos, ļaujot tai kļūt par ikdienišķu parādību cilvēka dzīvē: ar to nu varēja viegli sadzīvot, jo, saprotot, ka “mēs visi taču tāpat reiz mirsim”, un vairs neticot Dieva, kurš pieļāvis

The advantages of the region are its relief, nature, clean air and wonderful people. Next to the Baltic Country of Lakes lies a country with a poetic name “Bella Dvina”. This country is located in the area where the river Dvina – Daugava flows, which is well known since ancient times for the trade route “from Varangians to Greeks”. Looking at the map, one can conclude, that inhabitants of three countries – Russia, Belarus and Latvia – can consider the Western Dvina for their own. Its flow begins in Russia, and goes through Belarus. As it flows into Latvia, it is no longer Dvina, but rather Daugava, which then flows into the Baltic Sea. Active tourism throughout the year, fascinating cultural events, and picturesque sceneries – all of this comprises a unique mosaic, which provides true visual and aesthetical enjoyment. When ethnic Estonian and Latvian artists gained prominence in the late 1890s, their presence threatened Baltic German hegemony over the region’s culture. In 1905, revolution in the Russian Empire spilled over into the Baltic Provinces, sparking widespread anti-German violence. The revolution also galvanized Latvian and Estonian artists towards greater cultural autonomy and independence from Baltic German artistic insti- tutions. This article argues that the situation for artists before and after the 1905 revolution was not simply divisive along ethnic lines, as some nationalist historians have suggested. Instead, this paper examines how Baltic German, Estonian and Latvian artists oscillated between com- mon interests, inspiring rivalries, and politicized conflicts, question- ing the legitimacy of art as a universalizing language in multicultural societies. Since this Latvian army victory, first celebrated as Lāčplēsis Day on 11 November1920, accounts of this battle have been unrepresented, poorly represented or misrepresented. For example, the 2007 historical film Rīgas Sargi (The Defenders of Riga) uses the 1888 poem Lāčplēsis by Andrējs Pumpurs as a template to portray the Latvians successfully defeating the German-Russian force on their own without Allied military aid. Pumpurs’ dream and revolutionary legacy has provided a well used script for Latvian nation building.

Seeking Baltic German Art in the Nineteenth Century* Kristina JÕekalda The paper investigates the Baltic art historiography concerned with the heritage of medieval architecture in what is now Estonia and northern Latvia, aiming to detect possible conflicts and collisions – or at least a tense relationship – between a specifically Baltic identity and an inevitably German heritage. Against the background of the cultural and national aspirations of the German ‘motherland’, tsarist Russia and native Estonians/Latvians, the Baltic German identity constructions gradually became more and more pronounced in the course of the long nineteenth century. Asking when the need to differentiate between a German and a Baltic German heritage was first sensed, and when the research on this heritage was placed in the context of art history, the writings by the German-born, but Riga-based art historian Wilhelm Neumann serve as a case study. The focal point of the paper is the interrelation between the ‘discovery’ of the local heritage and the emergence of art history: the texts examined mirror the constructions of a Baltic identity, as much as they mirror the influence of the (German) discipline of art history. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract Over a very short period conditions for the Russian population in Latvia have changed dramatically. From being representatives of the majority nationality enjoying a special status in the Soviet multinational empire, Russians have become a national minority in a Latvian nation-state. The thesis focuses on the implications of these changes for the ethnic identity of Russians living in Latvia; the changes are analysed through the perspective of ethnopolitical developments in the country. An examination of relevant western and Latvian scholarly literature on ethnicity and nationality issues provides the theoretical framework within which to discuss the Russian question in Latvia. Conceptual issues are clarified and various explanations for the phenomenon of ethnicity are considered. The relationship between ethnicity and the political sphere is also examined.
