Emphasis during this term is on problems related to the study and conservation of organic materials found in art and archaeology from ancient to contemporary periods. The preparation, manufacture, and identification of the materials used in the construction and conservation of works of art are studied, as are mechanisms of degradation and the physicochemical aspects of conservation treatments. Enrollment is limited to conservation students and other qualified students with the permission of the faculty of the Conservation Center. This course is required for first-year conservation students. Emphasis during this term is on the chemistry and physics of inorganic materials found in art and archaeological objects from ancient to contemporary periods. The preparation, manufacture, and identification of the materials used in the construction and conservation of works of art are studied, as are mechanisms of degradation and the physicochemical aspects of conservation treatments. Each student is required to complete a laboratory assignment with a related report and an oral presentation. -

ZDZISŁAWA TOŁŁOCZKO* AT THE CONFLUENCE OF ART NOUVEAU AND ECCLECTIC EARLY MODERNISM IN RIGA’S METROPOLITAN ARCHITECTURE U ZBIEGU ART NOUVEAU I EKLEKTYCZNEGO WCZESNEGO MODERNIZMU W ARCHITEKTURZE METROPOLITALNEJ RYGI Abstract The aim of this paper was to draw attention to the coincidence of streets intersections ending, in general, in corner buildings making up typical and picturesque parts of the townscape of the 19th c. European cities, including the central quarter of Riga. This type of town-planning establishments perfectly compose with the art and aesthetics of Art Nouveau in Riga. An additional and very important component of the town- planning-architectonic solutions is the decorative finial of the corner houses (not only inJugendstil , but also the Latvian national romanticism) creating a harmonious composition in respect of art and town-planning, ideally completing the townscape of this Baltic metropolis. Keywords: Latvia, Riga, Cracow, New York, London, Berlin, history of architecture and city-planning, Art Nouveau, Modern Art, Jugendstil, National Romanticism Streszczenie Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na koincydencję zbiegów ulic zakończonych na ogół wyraźnymi narożami, tworzącymi typowe, a jednocześnie malownicze, fragmenty krajobrazu dziewiętna- stowiecznych miast europejskich, w tym również śródmieścia Rygi. Tego rodzaju założenia urbanistyczne doskonale komponują się ze sztuką i estetyką Art Nouveau w Rydze. Dodatkową i jednocześnie niezwy- kle ważną komponentą rozwiązań urbanistyczno-architektonicznych są umieszczone na narożach ozdobne zwieńczenia (nie tylko w stylu Jugendstil’u, ale także łotewskiego narodowego romantyzmu) komponujące się wspólnie i harmonijnie pod względem artystycznym i urbanistycznym, uzupełniając znakomicie pejzaż tej nadbałtyckiej metropolii. Колар, че е избран за длъжността „градский архитектор“. Няколко месеца след Освобождението, на мястото на бъдещата българска столица, той заварва едно изостанало Пориенталско селище с около 3000 къщи, 20 джамии и десетина хана, сбутани около непроходими от кал улички без канализация, водопровод и осветление. С делото на А. Колар, който създава първия й градоустройствен план, започва историята на евро- пейска София. Само за няколко десетилетия, благодарение на труда и таланта на плеяда европей- ски, а по-късно и български архитекти и инженери, тя напълно се променя. Наред с всичките си останали задължения, Антонин Колар проектира и първите публични сгради и обществени пространства: Военното министерство и Военното училище, Градската градина, Грандхотел „България“, Паметника на Васил Левски, Централна- та гара, Офицерския клуб. Те се превръщат в средище на важни обществени събития и прояви, в място за срещи, на които се взимат исторически решения и се раждат идеи за бъдещето. Това издание разказва за тези емблематични за столицата ни места като наше общо на- следство и е част от кампанията на Българската банка за развитие по повод 140-ата го- дишнина от встъпването в длъжност на Антонин Колар като първия градски архитект на София. -

STELLA PELšE 26 Creating the Discipline: Facts, Stories and Sources of Latvian Art History STELLA PELšE The article reflects on the main personalities, phases and achievements (such as major monographs and surveys) of art-historical research in Latvia, outlining the dominant ideas and institutional developments. While interest in art-related issues already emerged in Baltic German circles in the late nineteenth century, it was not until the late 1910s and early 1920s that the story of national art emerged as an important lacuna to be filled in the cultural consciousness of the newly founded nation-state. The construction of an uninterrupted line of artistic development from prehistoric times to the present came to the fore, inscribing the local heritage in the wider processes of the development of art. The Soviet period replaced the story of national art with the story of realist art produced on the territory of Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic; still the gradual entropy of imposed sociological method has largely encouraged a turn towards the autonomous artwork, examining it in a spectrum of aspects, such as regional routes of migration and influences, and genealogies of iconographic and stylistic traits. A loose empirical pluralistic and even eclectic approach seems to best describe the current situation in Latvian art history. It could be argued that the discipline of art history has been in a state of uncertainty and flux since its very beginning. The Eastern European context, particularly that of the Baltic states, further complicates the present situation. In the twentieth century there has appeared a cascade of critical rewritings in that region, largely related to po- litical upheavals and, to paraphrase Ernst Gombrich, stories of art abound. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 CATS Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation The centre is a strategic research partnership between three Copenhagen based research institutions Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK) The National Museum of Denmark (NMD) The School of Conservation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK) The cornerstone of CATS is technical art history, which is an interdisciplinary field of research between conservators, natural scientists and scholars from art historical and cultural studies. Technical art history investigates the making and meaning of art works, painting techniques and artists’ materials. A main objective of the research centre is to develop new and more exact methods to diagnose, treat and preserve our art historical heritage. The exploration of artistic practices is aimed at shedding light on the complex and fascinating cartography of ageing processes within works of art – to contribute to and advance the field of technical art history. The establishment of the Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation was made possible by a donation by the Villum Foundation and the Velux Foundation, and is a collaborate research venture between Statens Museum for Kunst, the National Museum of Denmark and the School of Conservation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation. Rethinking National Romanticism in the Architecture of Riga at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
SILVIja GROSA 56 Rethinking National Romanticism in the Architecture of Riga at the Turn of the Twentieth Century Silvija Grosa The article deals with the problem of interpretation related to national romanticism in Riga’s early twentieth-century architecture, focusing on the development of the term, as well as on its suitability. The complex cultural-historical context of early twentieth-century Riga is delineated; as in many peripheries of Europe, Riga was permeated by searches for a national style in the neo-romanticist vein typical of the period. This study attempts to answer the question of whether this trend, known in the Latvian history of architecture as Latvian national romanticism, really expresses the aspirations for a Latvian national style, as Baltic German architects were involved in its implementation and the trend was critically reviewed in early twentieth- century Latvian periodicals. In addition, architects of Latvian origin also put forward some ideas regarding classical heritage as a possible paradigm of national art. Fifteen years ago Riga’s historical centre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, testifying to the unique character and artistic quality of its architecture. This prestigious status has led both local and international circles to take an interest in Riga’s architecture at the turn of the twentieth century; the number of publications dealing with this subject has also increased. Still, not all issues related to the study and interpretation of Riga’s architecture have been resolved. This article aims to take up the problem of interpretation of ‘national romanticism’ in Riga’s architecture; the issue is well described in the text found on the website of the Riga Art Nouveau Museum: National romanticism reflects the attempts of Riga’s architects to create a spe- cific Latvian architecture. -
