Arriving at the Museum, I found the staff in tears about the military coup in Moscow, but they nonetheless allowed me to work. As I left, an elderly curator gave me a color lithograph of an early Byzantine icon. When I inquired about its source, she replied that it was from volume three of the history of the iconography of the Mother of God by Nikodim Pavlovich Kondakov.1 Puzzled, I said that I knew only two volumes of that major work, whereupon she replied that the plates were printed and the whole was ready for publication when the Russian Revolution aborted the project. That was during World War I, she said. She wanted me to have the lithograph, because World War III had begun that August day. Fortunately, she was wrong, but I always wondered about the unknown Kondakov volume until I began reading the book under review by Ivan Foletti (IF), a professor in the department of art history at Masaryk University in Bruno, and Adrien Palladino (AP), a post-doctoral fellow in the same department. In a recent video presentation,2 IF succinctly explains that the volume examines the immigration of Russian historians of Byzantine art to interwar Europe after the Russian Revolution. -

ISSN: 2158-7051 ==================== INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RUSSIAN STUDIES ==================== ISSUE NO. 5 ( 2016/2 ) THE LEGACY OF GENGHIS KHAN – THE MONGOL IMPACT ON RUSSIAN HISTORY, POLITICS, ECONOMY, AND CULTURE ANIL ÇİÇEK* Summary The Mongol impact on Russian history, politics, economy, and culture has been one of the most debated subjects not only among Russian historians, scholars, and philosophers, but also among the historians of Western countries as well. For Russian historians with a traditional approach, the Mongols brought nothing to Russia but destruction and bloodshed. The Westernizers approached the Mongol rule in Russia from the perspective of relations with Europe and thus perceived the Mongol impact as a very negative development, as Russia was isolated from Europe during the Mongol rule, which continued for almost 250 years. The Eurasian school, however, embraced the Mongol rule with the argument that it had a direct impact on strengthening the founding pillars of the Tsarist Russian State: Orthodoxy, centralization of political power, autocracy, and serfdom. In an attempt to make an impartial analysis, this paper first briefly takes a look at the different interpretations of Russian and Soviet historians of the impacts of the Mongol invasion. It then focuses on the search for concrete evidence that obviously demonstrates the impacts of the Mongol rule on Russia in various fields. In the last section, the paper tries to lay out its own impartial assessment based on the existing evidence as well as unbiased interpretations. Summary “Interactive Exhibits” – From the Collection MIYASHITA, Tohko As part of their educational activities, many art museums have recently held “interactive exhibits,” focusing on individual sensations. Based on these exhibits, I am investigating how best to put on an “interactive exhibit” where visitors can relax and enjoy the show without relying on any prior knowledge. In my article, I put forth three pieces. In Ryuumi Hashimoto’s “Song of Wind,” the pictures of the Jizo force the viewer to pay closer attention, which reveals a mysterious world hidden in the darkness. In Sadamasa Motonaga’s “Work,Pink-Red-91” the viewer’s eyes are drawn to the way the piece was painted, allowing the viewer to see the work with a scientific eye. In Kojin Kudo’s “Night,” viewers are made to search for the presence of “something” in the piece. In this article, I have investigated interactive exhibits through focused questions on the three pieces listed above. With such a specific focus, it is easier to gain a deeper understanding of the works without needlessly convoluting the discussion. Additionally, I have concluded that it is important to look for a reason for people’s opinions on the pieces, to use a variety of viewpoints, to not disregard any opinion, and to encourage discussion of the pieces by rephrasing and connecting the individual opinions.
