John Raymond is assistant professor of music in studies (trumpet) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Recently voted a rising star trumpeter in DownBeat magazine’s Critics Poll, Raymond has been making a name for himself as one of the most promising up-and-coming jazz musicians in the world. He has performed with some of the most well- respected names in jazz including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Billy Hart, Orrin Evans, Gilad Hekselman, and Linda Oh, among others. Raymond has released six albums since 2012, all of which have garnered critical acclaim from The New York Times, DownBeat magazine, JazzTimes, and others. He has been a featured artist at the Festival of New Trumpet Music and New York City’s Winter Jazz Fest, was interviewed by The Gospel Coalition and WBGO’sThe Checkout program, and received the 2015 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. Raymond has also established himself as a sought-after educator as a guest clinician and soloist at schools around the world. He has presented multiple times at the Jazz Education Network national conference, and his two-part article “Developing the Entrepreneurial Mind: Teaching Students How to Bloom Where They’re Planted” was recently published by JAZZed magazine. Raymond’s frequent critical acclaim includes The New York Times naming him “a prepossessing young trumpet player,” and DownBeat commenting that, “Raymond is steering jazz in the right direction.” Raymond’s newest album, Real Feels Live, Vol. 2, was released in January 2019 on . (Photo by Eric Ryan Anderson) American jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller (1955-2013) combined “the bright precision of bebop, as exemplified by and , with the clattering intrigue of modal jazz, especially as defined by McCoy Tyner” (The New York Times). Miller grew up in Greenwood, , during the Civil Rights Movement and first began playing and gospel music in church. He attended Memphis State University in 1973, where he met fellow jazz piano legends James Williams and , who were also in school at the time. After he finished his studies, he was offered a job with the Orchestra under the direction of . He went on to perform as a sideman with many other seminal bandleaders including , , , and , among others, and appeared on over 500 albums throughout his career. A widely respected bandleader in his own right, working with a trio or his own group, Wingspanm he also served as the director of jazz studies at William Paterson University from 2005 until his passing in 2013.
