. There wore two different canps at Therosi.en&tadt during-tho occupation. One of then callod "Bio Snail Portress” originated .so that all tho civilian •inhabitants of tho town (Theresienstadt) were evacuated and a. Ghetto was formed in the towni ■ Jews vroro then sent to this canp and they cone not only from Czechoslovakia but from Germany and frcm. all Golman-occupiod countries as well. The town- Theresienstadt was built as a. military fortress during the reign of Mario-Theresa, on the sano pattern as Josofoir. . . .During the tine of tho first Ropub-lic. there v/as a large military garrison, as .the town had not changed much in its architectural structure, nevertheless, there wore.about 5.000 civilian inhabitants ¿Lying in tho town. . During the time of the .first Republic thero was a population (civilian and military) of about 8,000 porson3 and the town was probably-not capable of accom modating more than this numbor. After $tio forming of the Ghetto, however, 40,000 to 60,C00 Jew«* wore living in exactly the sane living space during tho ¿x-y' occupation, and owing to this number, conditions in the. carp can \to11 bo imagined. Besides this Theresienstadt was a sort of 11 transit-station" for those Jows who '>7sre later sent to Oswi&czin or other rarrps so that living conditions in the canp continued to deteriorate all the time. Interrogations were carriod out thoro whioh were of such a character that oven the officials of the Gestapo in Prague could not* bring themselvos to carry thon out in such a nanner, and apart fron that "inconvenient" prisoner® and witnesses v/ore "liquidated" there. "Sondarbohandlung" (i.e. shooting or execution without a trial) was also carried out there. Almost' all parachutists and all Da jor prisoners wore kopt in this prison. ;7hile from the Ghetto Jows were sent for agricultural labour*. or for labour in the nearby surroundings, the political prisoners (including Jor./s. v/ho v/ore apart from thoir race, also imprisoned because of political reasons), worked on the hardest jobs, in the building of the underground air factory idne Richard", in the Schict factories in Usti n/1. on the unloading of coal and other goods from the cargo boats at Lovosice and in Usti n/1» otc.
