Soebrantas Km. 12,5 Simpang Baru Pekanbaru 28293-Telp/Fax. 0761-63277 Abstract Cultural diplomacy is a category of Soft Diplomacy in the implementation of a country's foreign policy. Cultural diplomacy is a manifestation of the implementation of public diplomacy. One of the cultural diplomacy instruments used by Indonesia to the United States is culinary. Diplomacy through culinary is known as gastrodiplomasi. Indonesian's Gastrodiplomacy aims to win the hearts and minds of foreigners thereby increasing interaction and cooperation with other countries. Using the theory of diplomacy is the concept of soft power by Joseph Nye, Jr and perspective of Neorealism by Kenneth Waltz, this research obtained data through literature studies and direct research to the Indonesia Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The research shows that Indonesian's Gastrodiplomacy have been done through annual festivals serving Indonesian culinary such as Indonesia Culinary Festival, participation of Indonesian government in annual culinary festival held by the United States of America and increasing the number of Indonesian restaurants in the United States of America. Culinary diplomacy also have been done through the media online, such as Youtube. It was also found that the implementation of culinary diplomacy impacts the level of Indonesian food and beverage exports to the United States and attracted the interest of the United States to visit Indonesia. -

Foreword Amb. Kim Young-sun Secretary General, ASEAN-Korea Centre The ASEAN* region has a great variety of cuisines that are distinctive despite having some common elements. ASEAN cuisine is a celebration of cultural diversity and unique ways of life, delivered through appetite-whetting dishes and exotic aromas. It embraces the unique characteristics of many different ethnicities, and in that way is a history of the culture of the region. The ASEAN spirit and passion permeate each and every dish, and food is an important link in the chain that binds the ASEAN community together. The ASEAN Culinary Festival 2016, organized by the ASEAN-Korea Centre, aims to introduce ASEAN cuisine to the Korean public by presenting a wide spectrum of ASEAN dishes. Thirty distinctive dishes are included; they were selected to suit the Korean palate while showcasing the diverse flavors of ASEAN. Under the theme “Gourmet Trips to ASEAN,” the Festival will help Koreans, also known for their cuisine, discover the sweet and savory ASEAN culinary delights. In line with the “Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration” campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, the Festival also intends to promote ASEAN culinary destinations by showcasing fascinating food trails across the region to the Korean public. Food is a universal language that brings people and cultures together. It is an essential part of life to all people of all nations. With the rise in the number of tourists traveling specifically to experience the cuisine of other peoples, food is increasingly important in enhancing harmony around the world. In this regard, I am certain that the ASEAN Culinary Festival will serve as a platform to strengthen the partnership between ASEAN and Korea by connecting the hearts and minds of the people and creating a bond over a “shared meal of diversity.” With the ASEAN-Korea Cultural Exchange Year in 2017, the ASEAN Culinary Festival is a new way to bring deeper cultural understanding between ASEAN and Korea. -

Global Chinese 2018; 4(2): 217–246 Don Snow*, Shen Senyao and Zhou Xiayun A short history of written Wu, Part II: Written Shanghainese https://doi.org/10.1515/glochi-2018-0011 Abstract: The recent publication of the novel Magnificent Flowers (Fan Hua 繁花) has attracted attention not only because of critical acclaim and market success, but also because of its use of Shanghainese. While Magnificent Flowers is the most notable recent book to make substantial use of Shanghainese, it is not alone, and the recent increase in the number of books that are written partially or even entirely in Shanghainese raises the question of whether written Shanghainese may develop a role in Chinese print culture, especially that of Shanghai and the surrounding region, similar to that attained by written Cantonese in and around Hong Kong. This study examines the history of written Shanghainese in print culture. Growing out of the older written Suzhounese tradition, during the early decades of the twentieth century a distinctly Shanghainese form of written Wu emerged in the print culture of Shanghai, and Shanghainese continued to play a role in Shanghai’s print culture through the twentieth century, albeit quite a modest one. In the first decade of the twenty-first century Shanghainese began to receive increased public attention and to play a greater role in Shanghai media, and since 2009 there has been an increase in the number of books and other kinds of texts that use Shanghainese and also the degree to which they use it. This study argues that in important ways this phenomenon does parallel the growing role played by written Cantonese in Hong Kong, but that it also differs in several critical regards. -

International Journal of Taiwan Studies 4 (2021) 311-344 Research Articles ⸪ Reconsidering Sinophone Studies: The Chinese Cold War, Multiple Sinocentrisms, and Theoretical Generalisation Flair Donglai Shi PhD Student, English Faculty, University of Oxford, Oxford, United Kingdom [email protected] Abstract Sinophone studies has improved the visibility of a range of Chinese-language cultural products and is expanding into a transnational and multilingual academic enterprise. With firm acknowledgement of the pragmatic benefits the Sinophone has brought (particularly to Anglophone and Taiwanese academia), this paper reflects on some of the problems embedded in the underlying premises and ideological mechanisms of the concept of the Sinophone that have so far been under-discussed. As a first step towards a more self-reflective meta-discourse about Sinophone studies, it highlights three areas that warrant more clarification and debate before the concept is applied to specific analyses: the significance of the Chinese Cold War; the matrix of multiple Sinocentrisms; and the double-edged sword of theoretical generalisation. Tingzijian functioned as lodging and as a social space for young writers and artists. For many lodger-writers, the Tingzijian was a temporary residence before they left around 1941. In the interim, Tingzijian life became a burgeoning literary subject, even a recognized literary category. This study explores what meanings people ascribed to Tingzijian, and the historical and the artistic function of the space in Chinese literature of the 1920s and 1930s. Scholars have traditionally viewed “Tingzijian literature” as the province of leftist “Tingzijian literati” (wenren) who later transformed into revolutionaries; this study reveals the involvement a much greater variety of writers. We find a cross section of the literary field, from famous writers like Ba Jin 巴金 and Ding Ling 丁玲, for whom living in a Tingzijian was an important stage in their transition from the margins to the center of the literary field, to a constellation of obscure tabloid writers concerned less with revolution than with common urbanites’ -

Herminingrum Journal of Ethnic Foods (2019) 6:15 Journal of Ethnic Foods https://doi.org/10.1186/s42779-019-0015-5 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Open Access The genealogy of traditional Javanese cassava-based foods Sri Herminingrum Abstract Cassava is generally consumed by Javanese who inhabited the areas where cassava plant is cultivated; therefore, culturally, it has ethnic importance. Even though formerly it was regarded as marginal food, its existence follows the nature of culture—ever-changing based on space and time. The study done aims to disclose the genealogy of various kinds of cassava-based foods in connection with Javanese food choices and food ways. Accordingly, the discussion encompasses the materials used, the preparation methods; cooking, serving, and giving suitable complements; the specific functions, the origin, and its development from the past to the present day. The findings significantly demonstrate that the numerous foods generated from cassava roots and leaves, covering staple foods, light meals, side dishes, and drinks, are manifestation of Indonesian cultural diversity. More importantly, this ethnic food in general is also inherent with the Javanese philosophy on living in harmony between humans and the nature surrounding that should be well managed. These two points underline that cassava-based food identity is not a mere cultural expression. It is built by Javanese communities through their natural experiences, simple knowledge, and hard efforts to make cassava-based foods still exist in agreement with the developing era.
