Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Religion in China Religion ∙ Max DEEG is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cardiff. Haley, Chair Michael E. Townsend Beth E. Rivin Program Authorized to Offer Degree School of Law © Copyright 2015 Yu Un Oppusunggu ii University of Washington Abstract Sudargo Gautama and the Development of Indonesian Public Order: A Study on the Application of Public Order Doctrine in a Pluralistic Legal System Yu Un Oppusunggu Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor John O. Haley School of Law A sweeping proviso that protects basic or fundamental interests of a legal system is known in various names – ordre public, public policy, public order, government’s interest or Vorbehaltklausel. This study focuses on the concept of Indonesian public order in private international law. It argues that Indonesia has extraordinary layers of pluralism with respect to its people, statehood and law. Indonesian history is filled with the pursuit of nationhood while protecting diversity. The legal system has been the unifying instrument for the nation. However the selected cases on public order show that the legal system still lacks in coherence. Indonesian courts have treated public order argument inconsistently. A prima facie observation may find Indonesian public order unintelligible, and the courts have gained notoriety for it. This study proposes a different perspective. It sees public order in light of Indonesia’s legal pluralism and the stages of legal development.

This paper will therefore refer to both practitioner and responder in relation to pre-hospital spinal injury management. A one-day seminar to present current practice (Ireland, UK and USA) and current research in spinal injury management was held in June 2015. The seminar was targeted at Council and Committee members of PHECC and also PHECC facilitators, tutors and assistant tutors. Fifty-five people attended the seminar; see Appendix 1 for details. The position papers on pre-hospital spinal injury management in both the UK and USA (Connor, Greaves et al. 2013) (White, Domeier et al. 2014) were used as primary discussion documents for seminar attendees. Both papers question the continued use of protocols for immobilisation of every trauma patient and in particular the use of a long board for other than extrication.

  • The Politics of Law of the Civil Right Protection to Children Born out of Wedlock in Indonesian Legal System1
The Politics of Law of the Civil Right Protection to Children Born Out of Wedlock in Indonesian Legal System1 By: B. Resti Nurhayati2 dan Enny Nurbaningsih3 Email: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Child civil rights are the personal rights owned by a child to enjoy the right to alimony, the right to use family name, and inheritance rights. Civil rights are automatically owned by legitimate children, but the civil rights of children born out of wedlock are enjoyed when their fathers and/ or mothers conduct "child recognition" and ”child validation" to children born out of wedlock. The institution of child recognition and validation was derived from the Dutch Wetboek Burgelijk applied for Dutch people who lived in the Dutch East Indies. When Indonesia has been independent, Burgerlijk Wetboek is still applied to fill in the legal vacuum. When Indonesia enacted Law No. 1 of 1974 on Marriage, not all aspects set out in the Civil Code are embodied, including the institution of child recognition and validation. Meanwhile, in practice, there is a need for the protection to children born out of wedlock. The enactment of Law No. 24 of 2013, makes children born out of wedlock lose the right to get recognition from their biological fathers because according to Law No. 24 of 2013, the recognition of children born out of wedlock can only be conducted if the children’s parents are married religiously. This provision eliminates the rights of children born out of wedlock whose parents may not be religiously married to each other so that children born out of wedlock remains to potentially experience discrimination.

  • View of ASEAN Food William W
Foreword Amb. Kim Young-sun Secretary General, ASEAN-Korea Centre The ASEAN* region has a great variety of cuisines that are distinctive despite having some common elements. ASEAN cuisine is a celebration of cultural diversity and unique ways of life, delivered through appetite-whetting dishes and exotic aromas. It embraces the unique characteristics of many different ethnicities, and in that way is a history of the culture of the region. The ASEAN spirit and passion permeate each and every dish, and food is an important link in the chain that binds the ASEAN community together. The ASEAN Culinary Festival 2016, organized by the ASEAN-Korea Centre, aims to introduce ASEAN cuisine to the Korean public by presenting a wide spectrum of ASEAN dishes. Thirty distinctive dishes are included; they were selected to suit the Korean palate while showcasing the diverse flavors of ASEAN. Under the theme “Gourmet Trips to ASEAN,” the Festival will help Koreans, also known for their cuisine, discover the sweet and savory ASEAN culinary delights. In line with the “Visit ASEAN@50: Golden Celebration” campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, the Festival also intends to promote ASEAN culinary destinations by showcasing fascinating food trails across the region to the Korean public. Food is a universal language that brings people and cultures together. It is an essential part of life to all people of all nations. With the rise in the number of tourists traveling specifically to experience the cuisine of other peoples, food is increasingly important in enhancing harmony around the world. In this regard, I am certain that the ASEAN Culinary Festival will serve as a platform to strengthen the partnership between ASEAN and Korea by connecting the hearts and minds of the people and creating a bond over a “shared meal of diversity.” With the ASEAN-Korea Cultural Exchange Year in 2017, the ASEAN Culinary Festival is a new way to bring deeper cultural understanding between ASEAN and Korea.
