Over the past 15 years, as its economic and technological prowess, dip- lomatic influence, and military capabilities have grown, China has turned its focus toward surpassing the United States. Chi- nese leaders have grown increasingly aggressive in their pur- suit of this goal following the 2008 global financial crisis and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Xi Jinping’s ascent to power in 2012. • Chinese leaders regard the United States as China’s primary adversary and as the country most capable of preventing the CCP from achieving its goals. Over the nearly three decades of the post-Cold War era, Beijing has made concerted efforts to diminish the global strength and appeal of the United States. Chinese leaders have become increasingly active in seizing op- portunities to present the CCP’s one-party, authoritarian gover- nance system and values as an alternative model to U.S. global leadership. • China’s approach to competition with the United States is based on the CCP’s view of the United States as a dangerous ideologi- cal opponent that seeks to constrain its rise and undermine the legitimacy of its rule. Global Chinese 2018; 4(2): 217–246 Don Snow*, Shen Senyao and Zhou Xiayun A short history of written Wu, Part II: Written Shanghainese https://doi.org/10.1515/glochi-2018-0011 Abstract: The recent publication of the novel Magnificent Flowers (Fan Hua 繁花) has attracted attention not only because of critical acclaim and market success, but also because of its use of Shanghainese. While Magnificent Flowers is the most notable recent book to make substantial use of Shanghainese, it is not alone, and the recent increase in the number of books that are written partially or even entirely in Shanghainese raises the question of whether written Shanghainese may develop a role in Chinese print culture, especially that of Shanghai and the surrounding region, similar to that attained by written Cantonese in and around Hong Kong. This study examines the history of written Shanghainese in print culture. Growing out of the older written Suzhounese tradition, during the early decades of the twentieth century a distinctly Shanghainese form of written Wu emerged in the print culture of Shanghai, and Shanghainese continued to play a role in Shanghai’s print culture through the twentieth century, albeit quite a modest one. In the first decade of the twenty-first century Shanghainese began to receive increased public attention and to play a greater role in Shanghai media, and since 2009 there has been an increase in the number of books and other kinds of texts that use Shanghainese and also the degree to which they use it. This study argues that in important ways this phenomenon does parallel the growing role played by written Cantonese in Hong Kong, but that it also differs in several critical regards. -

Th e Upsurge of Woman Writers Th ere was a great upsurge in woman writers during the 1980s in terms of both numbers and quality, a phenomenon that drew the attention of observers. Th e literary works of woman writers of diff ering ages and diff ering experience appeared at each stage and in each literary trend to diff ering reactions, leading to the work of woman writers becoming an important component of 1980s literature. Th e use of gender (“woman writers”) as one way of describing this literary phenomenon during this period was related to literature’s historical situation. As some critics have pointed out, there were two “high tides” of woman writers during the twentieth century: One was during the “May Fourth” period, and the other during the 1980s.1 Th e woman writers of the “May Fourth” period, such as Chen Hengzhe, Bing Xin, Lu Yin, Feng Yuanjun, Ling Shuhua, Bai Wei, and Luo Shu, and, somewhat later, writers such as Ding Ling and Su Xuelin, participated in the “liberation of the self”, “freedom of marriage”, and other social campaigns through their lit- erary writings as part of the enlightenment trend of thought that had intellectuals at its core. Th is writing not only accorded with the need of women to “discover” themselves, but also received attention as a social issue concerning “women’s liberation”. Moreover, their writing, in so far as it promoted innovative forces, was supported and guided by intel- lectual circles. However, precisely because the work of woman writers primarily received attention for participating in “social movements”, the setbacks met by the enlightenment movement they followed and the shift of attention in society from culture to politics led to a decrease and divisions in this form of writing by women with “oneself” as its object. -
