Mary Bassett (d. 1572), Jane Lumley (1537-1578), Jane Seager (fl. 1589), and Esther Inglis (1570/1-1624) each translated an existing printed text into English; each woman translated her source text on a linguistic level – from Greek, or Latin, or French into English – but also translated on an inter- semiotic level – from print to manuscript, sometimes with striking additions in terms of painting, drawing, needlework, calligraphy, and bindings.

Ian Garden’s The Third Reich’s Celluloid War: Propaganda in Nazi Feature Films, Documentaries, and Television Gary James Jason California State University, Fullerton The history of cinema is an important tool for understanding the use of film for propaganda and indoctrination. Scholars of propaganda should be grateful to Ian Garden, because his The Third Reich’s Celluloid War1 is a comprehensive and insightful history of Nazi propaganda films. He holds that the Nazis understood propaganda to be a powerful weapon and that they wielded it more effectively than did the Allies. He also notes, though, that the Nazi propaganda machine made a great number of mistakes. He seeks to explain the key features of the major German propaganda films, the degree to which they were propagandistic, and how effective they were. Upon reviewing his work, I conclude that although Garden offers thoughtful reflections in many ways, he understates the unique power of Nazi propaganda film. Garden discusses briefly the nature of propaganda, defining it as messaging aimed at persuasion (p. 11). Understood that way, propaganda is a benign concept; however, after persistent misuse over a century by political agents, it now pejoratively means the dispersing of mendacious information. On his view, propaganda doesn’t necessarily involve lying or distorting the truth—though it often does. Propaganda may involve stating facts that are true, but they are so selectively presented that they mislead the audience into the point of view the propagandist is pushing.

The small town of Berchtesgaden, Adolf Hitler’s favourite place in the Bavarian mountains, prepares for the 13th instalment of the popular people’s run “Running for the Fuehrer”. The route through the Thousand-Year Reich – documented by Leni Riefenstahl – includes the most important cities of the Nazi movement, the goal of the run is to demonstrate the German people’s desire to win the war as well as their eternal loyalty to the Fuehrer. And like every year, the winner has the honour of personally wishing Adolf Hitler a happy birthday on the 20th of April in Berlin. But unlike the years before, there are very few volunteers, and most candidates look like they’ll never be able to survive the ordeal. Leni Riefenstahl is less than pleased with the “people material” on offer – until a tall blonde man escorted by policemen catches her eye just as the runners are lining up. Leni is adamant that this picture-perfect Arian, Paul Renner, should take part in the run. What neither she nor the organizers know: Paul’s real name is Harry Freudenthal, and he is a Jew from Berlin who went into hiding in Vienna in 1943 and is now trying to survive the last weeks of the Nazi regime disguised as a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela.

Those who never had the opportunity to study it thoroughly and know it by a version that was not from the enemy and thus able to take fair and sensible conclusions. It is an opportunity for our opponents, who were often manipulated to understand the truth about us, to fight us unconsciously and to collaborate on the same system aimed to destroy us. Many of our enemies have become aggressive towards us for finding a feasible solution. As well as to get rid of all the prejudice created by the propaganda of the mass media to defame us. The present article is an attempt to illuminate and clarify the truth about the National Socialist worldview, which was accused and persecuted for decades by people who sought to protect the People's revolt against the power of money and the dictatorship of interest. Throughout the twentieth century, it was never given to the National Socialists the right to counsel or the opportunity of a fair and democratic debate.
