  • EDUCATION of POOR GIRLS in NORTH WEST ENGLAND C1780 to 1860: a STUDY of WARRINGTON and CHESTER by Joyce Valerie Ireland
EDUCATION OF POOR GIRLS IN NORTH WEST ENGLAND c1780 to 1860: A STUDY OF WARRINGTON AND CHESTER by Joyce Valerie Ireland A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire September 2005 EDUCATION OF POOR GIRLS IN NORTH WEST ENGLAND cll8Oto 1860 A STUDY OF WARRINGTON AND CHESTER ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to discover what provision there was in North West England in the early nineteenth century for the education of poor girls, using a comparative study of two towns, Warrington and Chester. The existing literature reviewed is quite extensive on the education of the poor generally but there is little that refers specifically to girls. Some of it was useful as background and provided a national framework. In order to describe the context for the study a brief account of early provision for the poor is included. A number of the schools existing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries continued into the nineteenth and occasionally even into the twentieth centuries and their records became the source material for this study. The eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century were marked by fluctuating fortunes in education, and there was a flurry of activity to revive the schools in both towns in the early nineteenth century. The local archives in the Chester/Cheshire Record Office contain minute books, account books and visitors' books for the Chester Blue Girls' school, Sunday and Working schools, the latter consolidated into one girls' school in 1816, all covering much of the nineteenth century.

  • The Blue Coat School Faith ~ Vision ~ Nurture
The Blue Coat School Proud to be p ar t o f The Cr anmer E duca t ion Tr ust Spring Newsletter – March, 2016 Robotic’s Nationals – Design Award Winners Congratulations to our BlueBots! Faith ~ Vision ~ Nurture Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers, This has been a short and very busy term! It is the business term, when students and staff are all focused on the exams to come, and the work that has to be submitted, marked and sometimes improved. Fortunately we haven’t had to contend with much snow (Friday, 4th March presented a few challenges with transport, but the Snow Zone Policy worked well. Thank you for your support), and good progress has been made. The newsletter focuses, as always, on what students have been doing in different areas of the school, and it is staff who generally tell the story. But this year I have asked Rebecca Howarth from Year 7 to introduce the term’s news. As an introduction to Blue Coat, and to all those happy (but possibly slightly apprehensive) Year 6’ers who have just got their letter, it’s a gem! (See below, and thank you). A Term in the Life at Blue Coat - By Rebecca Howarth 7B “When I first came to Blue Coat it was quite a shock. My primary school, St Agnes C of E, was very small with 105 pupils altogether and 15 pupils in Year 6. So coming to Blue Coat, with 249 students just in my year felt scary at first. Still, I was excited too, and two of my friends from Primary, Zoe and Sadie, were in my Form.

  • Headteacher Welcome
HEADTEACHER WELCOME ‘The reason a lot of people do not recognise opportunity is because it usually goes round wearing overalls looking like hard work’ - Thomas Edison Our wonderful Year 11s are over halfway through their GCSEs as you read this and we are very proud of how hard they have been working and how they are stepping up to the challenge of these exams. This time of year is incredibly pressurised for our young people, for their families and for teachers too as we are all unified in wanting the very best. It would be fair to say that it really is a team effort throughout the GCSE season as every member of staff has been involved in supporting the students in various ways from ensuring fruit and water are available at the start of exams to picking up anxious youngsters and being a friendly ear to providing post exam debriefs. Even the students from across other years have been part of the effort by being respectful and conscientious in ensuring Year 11s have the best experience possible. We are really looking forward to celebrating at the prom later this term – always a fabulous occasion in the Academy! The beginning of July will see our new Year 7s join us for a four day transition event which is an exciting new venture for us. It is a project agreed between many of the primary schools and both of the secondary schools in South Weston to try and ensure a positive and supportive move from primary to secondary as well as a great start to relationships between new families and the Academy.

Prolonged and combined efforts and partnership between national, regional and local government, 16–27 employers, community networks and local 3 SuperWeston people will be needed to restore confidence and economic activity.

  • UWGC-Chief-Executive-And-Clerk-Candidate-Brief
A Message from the Chairman Thank you very much for your interest in the role of Chief Executive and Clerk of the United Westminster and Grey Coat Foundation (UWGCF) in succession to the current Clerk who will retire at the end of this year. Until very recently the United Westminster Schools Foundation (UWS) and the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation (GCHF) were separate charities, with separate boards of trustees, which were administered by the same Foundation Office. On 31 March 2019 UWS and GCHF formally merged to become UWGCF with a single board of trustees. This creates an education charity of significant size and presents an extremely exciting opportunity for the Foundation in the years to come. We are looking for someone who is not only able to put forward strategies for Trustees to consider, but also to ensure that the current five schools are supported to help them continue to achieve excellence. These changes do not presage a change in the relationship with the Foundation’s schools; each school will retain its existing autonomy under the leadership of its respective Governing Body. The merger does, however, present opportunities to manage its endowments more effectively and to consider ways in which it can promote public benefit in a more focused and co-ordinated way than was possible before. The responsibilities of the Chief Executive and Clerk and the ideal candidate are described in this pack. You will note that the title of the post has been changed to reflect not only the traditional understanding of the term ‘Clerk’ in the field of education and other charitable organisations, but also to encompass the wide responsibility for all the executive functions of the office.
