Story and photo by Rebecca E. Tonn Mountaineer staff

A certified occupational therapy assistant at Evans Army Community Hospital made a simulated M-4 rifle out of splint material to aid the recovery of Soldiers who have hand, wrist and arm injuries. Sgt. Christopher Burcalow, a reservist assigned to EACH, said that about 15 Soldiers have already used the weapon with positive results. “It has been beneficial for the Soldiers,” Burcalow said. He made the M-4 out of low-temperature, moldable plastic; it has a trigger simulator with variable trigger pull resistance. A computer program measures progress: number of repetitions, weight of trigger pull and amount of time between trigger pulls. Soldiers can see they’ve squeezed the trigger faster and/or harder than the last time, Burcalow said. “We don’t have to go to the range (for occupational therapy). It’s right here when they need it. One main concern of Soldiers is they want to go back to duty, but they can’t pull the trigger on their weapons. With this simulator, Soldiers feel confident that (after therapy) they are ready to train on the real thing at the range,” Burcalow said. The M-4 also has a working charging handle — to chamber the first round — adjustable sight knobs and a selector switch. Soldiers can insert and remove actual magazines. Capt. Priscillia Bejarano, assistant chief of occupational Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Sgt. Contracts From Page 19 goods to the seller, if the goods are already in the buyer’s possession. The seller is required to inform the buyer how to return the goods and the seller must pay for return shipping. For example, if you bought an encyclopedia and then changed your mind about the purchase, you can cancel the contract within three business days and the salesman has to come and pick up the encyclopedias or pay to have them sent back to the seller. Some buyers claim that they did not know of their right to rescind. If they had read the entire contract, they would have known of their right to rescind. Most contract issues would not occur if the buyer carefully read the entire contract before signing. Athlete of the Week Ann Claiborne Sports Position: Fitness and bodybuilding competitor Accomplishment: Overall winner of the Steel City Bodybuilding and Fitness Contest in Pueblo What got you started in the sport? I started competing in 2003 after I returned from my deployment to the desert. I saw the competitors in magazines and at shows I went to and I thought I could get to that level. What was your best moment in the sport? I have won titles in New Mexico and Colorado, but Steel City is the most significant to me because I won the overall competition. I thought I would do well in the competition because I have come a long way in the past seven months since I had my son and began training again. This was my first competition since my son was born, I was in the best shape of my life but I didn’t know if I was in good enough shape to win the overall competition. Why is participating in this sport important to you? Its extremely important to me to do this show more than any other because it represents the military and promotes military fitness. This goes above and beyond even the fitness testing that we do to be ready to train and fight. This is also my chance to represent all the Soldiers and military people, who, like me, are ready to defend our nation. If you could meet one person from the fitness sports would who would it be and why? I would like to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has done much to promote fitness and now he is promoting fitness to our young people. He is trying to help decrease childhood obesity. If we start teaching our children when they’re young how to be physically fit it, will Photo by Walt Johnson help them in their quality of life when they get older.
