Simon Fraser University Library Burnaby, BC, Canada ABSTRACT Up until this point, 2006, Asian Canadian criticism has sought legitimacy within a national framework in its efforts to carve out a distinctive Asian Canadian identity space. However, Canada is now explicitly "transnational"; it has been and continues to be a site of interconnected local and global movements that come together to produce particular spatial, political, and cultural configurations. Asian Canadian criticism has the potential to leverage itself as a critical medium for disturbing and deterritorializing constructed borders. The permeable critical lens of the present rereads the nation as a womb-space whose naturalized borders have allowed the nation-state to obscure its heterogeneity with the myth of stable identity reproduction. Literary texts like SKY Lee's Disappearing Moon Cafe, Denise Chong7s The Concubine's Children, Joy Kogawa7s Obasan, and Kerri Sakamoto's The ElectricalFiedhave a tendency to write according to national confines because they have yet to break out of naturalized domestic borders. Other texts like Anita Rau Badami7s Tamarind Mem and Wayson Choy7s TheJade Peony claim belonging within the nation by reproducing dominant paradigms that reify constructed borders. However, recent works like Hiromi Goto7s The Kappa Child, Ashok Mathur's 7%e Shorf, Happy Life of HanyKumar, and Kerri Sakamoto's One HundredMillion Hearfs have moved beyond claiming the nation to using present transnational contexts to rethink supposedly fixed identity spaces. Hiromi Goto7sHopeful Monsters and Larissa Lai's Salt fish Girlare examples of texts that further denaturalize the borders of the nation by claiming materiality and productivity within ambivalent subject positions. Donna Haraway7s"cyborg" is a crucial term for thinking about these recent Asian Canadian texts that negotiate the multiple material and discursive forces that shape their subjectivity. The cyborg exposes Asian Canadian as a fundamentally mixed and intersectional subject position. Asian Canadian criticism moves beyond a national framework through this critical performance that mobilizes the category as a productive rereading medium. Works like Laiwan7s"notes towards a body," "notes towards a body II," and Remotely in Touch presage a future for Asian Canadian literature in which it can leverage its own cyborg power for performing and producing change. In 2006, Asian Canadian criticism stands at a moment of praxis as one of multiple Asian Canadian bodies that have worked within the previously naturalized borders of the nation. With the spread of globalization and its destabilizing effects, new spaces for rereading the borders of the nation have opened up. As Diana Brydon writes, "it's time for a new set of questions" (14), arguing that twenty-first century Canadians must move beyond seeing the nation as a static,

    Susan Fisher Japanese Elements in the Poetry of Fred Wah and Roy Kiyooka For nearly a century, Japanese poetic forms have pro- vided inspiration for poets writing in English. The importance of Japanese poetry for Ezra Pound and its role in the formation of Imagism have been well documented (see, for example, Kawano, Kodama, and Miner). Charles Olson, in his manifesto "Projective Verse" (1950), drew examples from Japanese sources as well as Western ones. Several of the Beat Generation poets, such as Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, and Philip Whalen, studied in Japan and their work reflects a serious interest in Japanese poetry. Writing in 1973, p o e t and translator Kenneth Rexroth declared that "classical Japanese and Chinese poetry are today as influential on American poetry as English or French of any period, and close to determinative for those born since 1940" (157). Rexroth may have been overstating this influence; he, after all, had a role in creating it. Nonetheless, what Gary Snyder calls the "myste- riously plain quality" of East Asian verse has served as a model for the simple diction and directness of much contemporary poetry ("Introduction" 4). Writers belonging to these two generations of Asian-influenced American poets—the Imagists and the Beat poets—had no ethnic connection to Asia. But the demographic changes of the last few decades have produced a third generation whose interest in Asian poetry derives at least in part from their own Asian background. Several Asian Canadian poets have written works that are modelled on Japanese genres or make sustained allusions to Japanese literature.

Dans Chorus of Mushrooms, les parents japonais immigrants de Muriel, ou Murasaki, construisent l’identité de toute la famille sur le rejet de la langue et de la culture japonaises ; dans Monkey Beach, la communauté de Haisla des Premières nations de Kitamaat où vivent la protagoniste Lisamarie Hill et sa famille, s’est presque entièrement occidentalisée et pratiquement plus personne ne parle le Haisla.     Corning out of the House: A Conversation with Lee Maracle JENNIFER KELLY Jennifer Kelly spoke with Lee Maracle in her home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October 12, 1993. Maracle introduced herself as follows: I WAS BORN in Vancouver, but I was raised in North Vancouver. My mother is Métis, my father Salish. I went to public school until the eleventh grade, and then I dropped out. I kicked around in the Red Power movement for about seven years, which became the sover• eignty movement. I was one of the first Native people in this country to articulate a position of sovereignty, back in 196g. I have this reputation of being a pioneer of sorts, I suppose. Just after Maria Campbell's Halfbreed [1973], Bobbi Lee [1975] came out. I did all kinds of writing. But after about 1988, I decided to be a serious writer. I have four children. I should say that I have four adults—they all grew up on me. I recently moved to Toronto, basically to do a different kind of work. I've been doing a lot of empowerment work, through writing and counselling, particularly around sexual abuse issues, in Cape Croker and around the Toronto area. I bring a lot of indigenous teachings to that work. My most recent work is Ravensong [1993], just before that was Sundogs [1992]. I think they were out within a month of each other. And, in fact, the first drafts were written within six months of each other and then they were re-written almost in tandem, while I was teaching, and going to school.

These issues are important as they continue to impact Chinese-Canadians and other diasporic communities today. The thesis explores how language in the two novels reveals that Chinese Canadians have complex and mutable identities and how notions of identity challenge the control the hegemonic powers seek to construct and restrict the Chinese identity, which in turn also restricts ideas of language. I attempt to demonstrate how these two novels resist a generic, one-dimensional view of Chinese Canadian identity and language. In the dissertation, I analyze a body of literary texts by contemporary Indigenous and Asian North American writers whose works contain instances of reciprocal representation. I argue that actions proceeding from and grounded in praxes of acknowledgement and reciprocity constitute openings to solidarity. By enacting Asian Canadian studies explicitly with decolonial solidarities in the foreground, I argue that Asian Canadian studies may not only work in ethical alignment with Indigenous knowledges and methodologies, but may also enliven and reconstitute the solidarities upon which Asian Canadian studies is premised. Bringing Asian Canadian studies into dialogue with scholarly work from Indigenous studies and recent research on Asian settler colonialism within a transnational Asian (North) American context, this dissertation considers reciprocal representations across a number of literary works by Indigenous and Asian Canadian women.
