Parliamentary Poet Laureate POETRY CONNECTION: LINK UP WITH CANADIAN POETRY Daphne Marlatt (1942 – ) was born in Australia but has lived most of her life in Vancouver. She was a key constituent of the early 1960’s “Tish” group at the University of British Columbia and has published numerous books of fiction and poetry. Since the 1970’s she has been a major participant in feminist writing and critique and, recently, has written for Noh theatre. Her poems here resonate with two earlier books (Vancouver Poems, 1972 and Salvage, 1991) in her ongoing interest in what might be considered a “poetics of renovation” that attends to texts of revision, rewriting, and extension. In 2006 she was made a Member of the Order of Canada. The Power of the Word: The (Unnameable) Lesbian Body Janne Cleveland It is our fiction that validates us. -- Monique Wittig, The Lesbian Body In the twenty-five years since The Lesbian Body was published in English translation, the question of how to present and represent lesbianism has continued to be a source of challenge, resistance, and more than a little anxiety. Central to this inquiry has been the question of language. What language is adequate to constitute the homosexual woman, the lesbian, without running the risk of devolving into an essentialist critique that does little to advance the project of creating a visible and viable presence? Is it possible to define lesbianism in any meaningful and satisfactory way? From what point, or points, is this even a useful exercise? While embarking on a recent course entitled “Theories of Lesbian Sexuality”, I was struck by the number of scholarly works that continue to refer to Wittig’s work. Regardless of whether the readings had their origin in the 1970s, or the late 1990s, it became clear that Wittig’s The Lesbian Body continues to be a site from which to engage the question of representation. More than a quarter of a century after its initial English publication, Wittig’s novel continues to stimulate debate, and provide an arena in which to explore the difficult terrain of the textual construction of female subjectivity upon which Wittig broke the ground for much feminist critical analysis that has since followed.[1] A close reading of this text reflects a strategic use of language that challenges the reader to consider ways in which to construct the lesbian subject from a body not bound to normative and limiting configurations of masculinist discourse. -

Tout en reconnaissant que, comme l’a démontré Emme LaRoque, les possibilités de ces littératures ne se limitent pas à des messages culturels et sociaux, l’auteure du présent article se concentre sur des textes choisis des écrivains autochtones canadiens qui manifestent très ouvertement des visions entrecroisées d’un projet social traité comme « le » principal projet contemporain des littérature des Premières Nations. Les textes récents écrits par des auteurs autochtones en établissant un diagnostic très pessimiste de la condition du monde, semblent en même temps viser leur propre objectif par la mise en valeur des éléments relevant des épistémologies et des ontologies indigènes. Ces dernières sont vues, dans ce contexte, comme une nécessité urgente mais aussi elles demeurent ouvertes aux discussions. Les ouvrages sont destinés aux lecteurs qui n’appartiennent pas à la communauté autochtone et qui ne sont pas issus de la société de colons canadiens. De plus en plus souvent les auteurs autochtones introduisent dans leurs textes une profonde conscience globale, en essayant d’agir contre ce qu’ils considèrent comme le mal causé par la globalisation en globalisant la portée et la thématique de leur littérature. Leurs ouvrages suggèrent que s’il y a encore un espoir de guérison et de survie globale, il ne peut être réalisé que par l’intermédiaire de l’éducation et d’une coopération importante de multiples communautés en interaction, tant sur le plan global que local. -

Sylvia Terzian Surviving My Mother’s Legacy Patriarchy, Colonialism, and Domestic Violence in Lee Maracle’s Daughters are Forever This paper examines the role of the mother figure in Native Canadian women’s fic- tion. Lee Maracle’s Daughters are Forever addresses the issue of multiple margin- alization experienced by Native women, and explores the violent impact of Western patriarchy and colonialism on the relationship between mothers and daughters in Aboriginal societies. Maracle’s text demonstrates a link between the mother’s legacy, cultural legacy and the legacy of trauma experienced by Native women in the past and in the twenty-first century. Specifically, Maracle’s text exposes the socio-cultural and historical processes and structures that have shaped Native women’s subjectivity and that underlie the cycle of domestic violence and abuse within Native Canadian families and communities. Web of Continuity: The Mother Figure In Native Women’s Literature The Mother, the Grandmother, recognized from earliest times into present among those people of the Americas who kept to the eldest traditions, is celebrated in social structures, architecture, law, custom, and the oral tradition. To her we owe our lives, and from her comes our ability to endure, regardless of the concerted assaults on our, on Her being, for the past five hundred years of colonization. She is the Old Woman Spider who weaves us together in a fabric of intercon- nection. (Allen, 1986: 11) Lee Maracle’s Daughters Are Forever is haunted by history and memory, and by a mother figure that embodies both. The mother figure is central to Native North American oral and written cultures. -

INTIMATE ENCOUNTERS WITH VIOLENCE: MEDIA AND TRAUMA IN THE WORK OF PHYLLIS WEBB AND DAPHNE MARLATT by © Collin Campbell A Dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2021 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador i Abstract This dissertation looks at the work of Phyllis Webb and Daphne Marlatt, two West Coast Canadian poets who explored questions of media technologies and trauma violence in their work during the latter half of the twentieth century. This thesis takes up contemporary phenomenological and feminist analyses of the connections between media technologies and trauma, especially war violence, in relation to both the creative and practical careers of these two writers. Research into the histories of media technologies such as the letter, radio, photography, and television shows how these technologies have shaped our experience of violence both globally and locally, from nineteenth-century colonial garrisons in Canada to the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War to the 1991 Gulf War. Ultimately, this dissertation suggests that these two poets offer new phenomenological interpretations of the ways in which media technologies shape our perception of historical, hidden traumas. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr. Joel Deshaye for endless patience and insight in supervising this dissertation. Siting itself at this largely unexplored academic juncture, the thesis analyses the complex interaction of feminist politics and fiction publishing in twentieth-century Britain. Chapter 1 -" 'Books With Bite': Virago Press and the Politics of Feminist Conversion" - focuses on Britain's oldest extant women's publishing venture, Virago Press, and analyses the organisational structures and innovative marketing strategies which engineered the success of its reprint and original fiction lists.
