Running head: OHITIKA CHADE WIYA Ohitika Chade Wiya – Brave Hearted Woman: A Narrative of Recovery, Reclamation and Renewal of an Indigenous woman’s body image by Toni Sparkling Eyes Letendre A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation University of Alberta © Toni Sparkling Eyes Letendre, 2016 OHITIKA CHADE WIYA ii Abstract Body image research with Indigenous women typically focuses on the concept of health and their understandings of health. However, it is necessary to acknowledge how Indigenous women’s body image has been shaped through heteropatriarchy and settler colonialism. The purpose of this autoethnography was to understand Indigenous women’s body image. This study has been guided through an Indigenous perspective that draws from my own Indigenous background as a Nakota and the theoretical framework of Indigenous feminism(s). The guiding research question was ‘how can we create a safe space for Indigenous women to seek empowerment and find opportunity to share their own body image narratives of heteropatriarchal colonial and sexual violence?’ Typically, in our society when individuals speak up about the violence they experience, they are victim-blamed and shunned. When Indigenous women experience colonial or sexual violence (e.g. missing and murdered Indigenous women), they are silenced. I used epiphanies to capture these experiences and to challenge the conceptualization of Indigenous bodies within the biomedical and mainstream media discourse. I drew from remembered moments that have significantly impacted my body image experiences. I created a three-part collection of poetry and prose to capture my thoughts, feelings, and emotions from racism, sexism, and discrimination growing up in Edmonton, Alberta. -

Tout en reconnaissant que, comme l’a démontré Emme LaRoque, les possibilités de ces littératures ne se limitent pas à des messages culturels et sociaux, l’auteure du présent article se concentre sur des textes choisis des écrivains autochtones canadiens qui manifestent très ouvertement des visions entrecroisées d’un projet social traité comme « le » principal projet contemporain des littérature des Premières Nations. Les textes récents écrits par des auteurs autochtones en établissant un diagnostic très pessimiste de la condition du monde, semblent en même temps viser leur propre objectif par la mise en valeur des éléments relevant des épistémologies et des ontologies indigènes. Ces dernières sont vues, dans ce contexte, comme une nécessité urgente mais aussi elles demeurent ouvertes aux discussions. Les ouvrages sont destinés aux lecteurs qui n’appartiennent pas à la communauté autochtone et qui ne sont pas issus de la société de colons canadiens. De plus en plus souvent les auteurs autochtones introduisent dans leurs textes une profonde conscience globale, en essayant d’agir contre ce qu’ils considèrent comme le mal causé par la globalisation en globalisant la portée et la thématique de leur littérature. Leurs ouvrages suggèrent que s’il y a encore un espoir de guérison et de survie globale, il ne peut être réalisé que par l’intermédiaire de l’éducation et d’une coopération importante de multiples communautés en interaction, tant sur le plan global que local. -

Sylvia Terzian Surviving My Mother’s Legacy Patriarchy, Colonialism, and Domestic Violence in Lee Maracle’s Daughters are Forever This paper examines the role of the mother figure in Native Canadian women’s fic- tion. Lee Maracle’s Daughters are Forever addresses the issue of multiple margin- alization experienced by Native women, and explores the violent impact of Western patriarchy and colonialism on the relationship between mothers and daughters in Aboriginal societies. Maracle’s text demonstrates a link between the mother’s legacy, cultural legacy and the legacy of trauma experienced by Native women in the past and in the twenty-first century. Specifically, Maracle’s text exposes the socio-cultural and historical processes and structures that have shaped Native women’s subjectivity and that underlie the cycle of domestic violence and abuse within Native Canadian families and communities. Web of Continuity: The Mother Figure In Native Women’s Literature The Mother, the Grandmother, recognized from earliest times into present among those people of the Americas who kept to the eldest traditions, is celebrated in social structures, architecture, law, custom, and the oral tradition. To her we owe our lives, and from her comes our ability to endure, regardless of the concerted assaults on our, on Her being, for the past five hundred years of colonization. She is the Old Woman Spider who weaves us together in a fabric of intercon- nection. (Allen, 1986: 11) Lee Maracle’s Daughters Are Forever is haunted by history and memory, and by a mother figure that embodies both. The mother figure is central to Native North American oral and written cultures. -

To advance the knowledge of the interconnectedness of violence, I conducted two focus groups with six Indigenous women staff at Wilfrid Laurier University. This research, informed by Indigenous feminism and storytelling methodologies, shares their understandings of how colonial and gendered violence cannot be understood independent from one another. -

Received: 6 January 2019; Accepted: 6 March 2019; Published: 11 March 2019 Abstract: As a necessarily political act, the theorizing, debating and enacting of ecological economies offer pathways to radical socio-economic transformations that emphasize the ecological and prioritize justice. In response to a research agenda call for ecological economics, we propose and employ an ecofeminist frame to demonstrate how the logics of extractivist capitalism, which justify gender biased and anti-ecological power structures inherent in the growth paradigm, also directly inform the theoretical basis of ecological economics and its subsequent post-growth proposals. We offer pathways to reconcile these epistemological limitations through a synthesis of ecofeminist ethics and distributive justice imperatives, proposing leading questions to further the field. We make this statement to act against the erasure of ongoing colonial legacies across Turtle Island and to acknowledge that we contribute to and benefit from the expulsion, assimilation, and genocide of Indigenous Peoples. -

Then, it is fin- ished no matter how brave its warriors or how strong their weapons.” -Cheyenne Proverb Tina Parke-Sutherland Stephens College Abstract: Ancient female-centered Native American myths reveal pre-colonial at- titudes about gender, gender roles, and sexuality as well as about human persons’ essential relations with the non-human world. Girls and women in these stories vari- ously function as creators, embodiments of the sacred, and culture-bringers. After settler colonialism, the subsistence contract embodied in these women-centered myths was broken. On Native lands, unparalleled ecological disaster followed. Since then, Native people and their lands have suffered. Women and girls have doubly suffered from the colonizing culture and its patriarchal institutions as well as from their own cultures’ adopted misogyny. But in the last few decades, Native girls and women have taken the lead in rejecting the false choice between prosperity and sustainability. Their ecofeminist activism has spread throughout Native America, perhaps most suc- cessfully in the Southwest with the Hopi and Navajo Black Mesa Water Coalition and in North Dakota with the Water Protectors encampment on the Standing Rock Reservation to block the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline. This essay details those two inspirational projects that, in the words of Pueblo poet Simon Ortiz, bear witness to “a spring wind / rising / from Sand Creek.” Keywords: Native American, ecofeminist activism, Black Mesa Water Coalition, Wa- ter Protectors, Standing Rock Reservation. -

Book Notes #71 August 2021 By Jefferson Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Andrew Roth Songs of Freedom, Songs of Protest Part One As always, reader responses give me ideas for future Book Notes. In this and next week’s Book Notes, I’ll be following the suggestion of several readers who, in response to the two Book Notes in June on patriotic music, thought it might be interesting to canvass America’s tradition of protest music. If one of my The American Tapestry Project’s major threads is “Freedom’s Faultlines”, those tales of race and gender, those tales of exclusion and the many times America did not live up to its stated ideals, then the songs those excluded sang as they fought for inclusion ring patriotic. For, as the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his last speech the night before he was murdered, “Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right!” [1] And, those “rights” found some of their most memorable expressions in songs of protest exhorting America, as King said, “Be true to what you said on paper.” [2] In this Note, we’ll answer “What is a protest song?”, and we’ll consider three approaches to exploring protest music: a chronological approach, a thematic- genre approach, and although it sounds kind of silly a “Greatest Hits” approach. There actually are “Top Ten”, “Top Fifty” protest song lists from reputable sources floating around the internet. Finally, we’ll dive into two of the genres for a closer look at songs protesting environmental issues and, most famously, anti-war songs from World War I through the War in Viet Nam to Operation Iraqi Freedom. -

Corning out of the House: A Conversation with Lee Maracle JENNIFER KELLY Jennifer Kelly spoke with Lee Maracle in her home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October 12, 1993. Maracle introduced herself as follows: I WAS BORN in Vancouver, but I was raised in North Vancouver. My mother is Métis, my father Salish. I went to public school until the eleventh grade, and then I dropped out. I kicked around in the Red Power movement for about seven years, which became the sover• eignty movement. I was one of the first Native people in this country to articulate a position of sovereignty, back in 196g. I have this reputation of being a pioneer of sorts, I suppose. Just after Maria Campbell's Halfbreed [1973], Bobbi Lee [1975] came out. I did all kinds of writing. But after about 1988, I decided to be a serious writer. I have four children. I should say that I have four adults—they all grew up on me. I recently moved to Toronto, basically to do a different kind of work. I've been doing a lot of empowerment work, through writing and counselling, particularly around sexual abuse issues, in Cape Croker and around the Toronto area. I bring a lot of indigenous teachings to that work. My most recent work is Ravensong [1993], just before that was Sundogs [1992]. I think they were out within a month of each other. And, in fact, the first drafts were written within six months of each other and then they were re-written almost in tandem, while I was teaching, and going to school.
