The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai
The Lithuanian Jewish Community of Telšiai By Philip S. Shapiro1 Introduction This work had its genesis in an initiative of the “Alka” Samogitian Museum, which has undertaken projects to recover for Lithuanians the true history of the Jews who lived side-by-side with their ancestors. Several years ago, the Museum received a copy of the 500-plus-page “yizkor” (memorial) book for the Jewish community of Telšiai,2 which was printed in 1984.3 The yizkor book is a collection of facts and personal memories of those who had lived in Telšiai before or at the beginning of the Second World War. Most of the articles are written in Hebrew or Yiddish, but the Museum was determined to unlock the information that the book contained. Without any external prompting, the Museum embarked upon an ambitious project to create a Lithuanian version of The Telshe Book. As part of that project, the Museum organized this conference to discuss The Telshe Book and the Jewish community of Telšiai. This project is of great importance to Lithuania. Since Jews constituted about half of the population of most towns in provincial Lithuania in the 19th Century, a Lithuanian translation of the book will not only give Lithuanian readers a view of Jewish life in Telšiai but also a better knowledge of the town’s history, which is our common heritage. The first part of this article discusses my grandfather, Dov Ber Shapiro, who was born in 1883 in Kamajai, in the Rokiškis region, and attended the Telshe Yeshiva before emigrating in 1903 to the United States, where he was known as “Benjamin” Shapiro. -
Exiles and Constituents: Baltic Refugees and American Cold War Politics, 1948-1960
Exiles and Constituents: Baltic Refugees and American Cold War Politics, 1948-1960 Jonathan H. L’Hommedieu A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Turku in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Social Sciences in the Department of Contemporary History Turku 2011 Serial: Humaniora B 338 ISBN 978-951-29-4811-6 ISSN 0082-6987 Abstract Jonathan H. L’Hommedieu: Exiles and Constituents: Baltic Refugees and American Cold War Politics, 1948-1960 This dissertation explores the complicated relations between Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian postwar refugees and American foreign policymakers between 1948 and 1960. There were seemingly shared interests between the parties during the first decade of the Cold War. Generally, Eastern European refugees refused to recognize Soviet hegemony in their homelands, and American policy towards the Soviet bloc during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations sought to undermine the Kremlin’s standing in the region. More specifically, Baltic refugees and State Department officials sought to preserve the 1940 non-recognition policy towards the Soviet annexation of the Baltic States. I propose that despite the seemingly natural convergence of interests, the American experiment of constructing a State-Private network revolving around fostering relations with exile groups was fraught with difficulties. These difficulties ultimately undermined any ability that the United States might have had to liberate the Baltic States from the Soviet Union. As this dissertation demonstrates, Baltic exiles were primarily concerned with preserving a high level of political continuity to the interwar republics under the assumption that they would be able to regain their positions in liberated, democratic societies. -

Atskleidþiama, kurie bankai sutiko tai padaryti, o kurie grieþtai pasiprieðino okupantø këslams perimti Lietuvai priklausantá turtà. Pateikiama smulki aukso kiekio ir lëðø, buvusiø uþsienio bankuose, apskaita ir uþsienio bankø sàraðai. Pagrindiniai þodþiai: nacionalizacija; litas; valiuta; auksas; Lietuvos bankas; TSRS valstybinis bankas. HE LITTLE ENTENTE and ROMANIA from the PERSPECTIVE of T LITHUANIAN DIPLOMACY in the 1930S
Revista Română pentru Studii Baltice şi Nordice, Vol. 3, Issue 2 (2011): pp. 265-274 HE LITTLE ENTENTE AND ROMANIA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF T LITHUANIAN DIPLOMACY IN THE 1930s Dalia Bukelevičiūtė Vilnius University, Faculty of History, E-mail: [email protected] This paper has been presented at the Second International Conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies in Romania: Black Sea and Baltic Sea Regions: Confluences, influences and crosscurrents in the modern and contemporary ages hosted by the Romanian Association for Baltic and Nordic Studies, Târgoviste, May 20-22, 2011 and is prepared as part of postdoctoral fellowship research funded by European Union Structural Funds project entitled ”Postdoctoral Fellowship Implementation in Lithuania”. Abstract: The first diplomatic contacts between Lithuanian and Romanian representatives started in the aftermath of World War I when Lithuania was looking for the protection of her inhabitants who were still refugees in Russia. As Russia became entrenched with Bolshevism and Civil War, the Lithuanian citizens were evacuated through Romanian territory from South Ukraine and Crimea. Lithuania and Czechoslovakia established diplomatic relations in December 1919 and eventually an attempt was made to set up ties also with Romania. As a member of the Little Entente and an ally of Poland, Romania attracted the attention of the Lithuanian government. Romania recognized Lithuania de jure on August 21, 1924 and Dovas Zaunius was appointed as the first Lithuanian envoy to Bucharest. Nevertheless, during the next decade no political or diplomatic contacts between Lithuania and Romania were recorded. With the growing influence of Germany, the Soviet Union and the Little Entente on the international arena, Edvardas Turauskas was appointed on August 27, 1935 as envoy to Romania residing in Prague and later in the year Romania accredited Constantin Vallimarescu for the position of envoy to Lithuania residing in Riga. -
'Listen, the Jews Are Ruling Us Now': Antisemitism and National Conflict
B02 POLIN 25 TEXT 2/5/12 09:05 Page 305 ccccccccccccccccdxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ‘Listen, the Jews are Ruling Us Now ’ Antisemitism and National Conflict during the First Soviet Occupation of Lithuania, 1940– 1941 . : O 1940 Ignas Šeinius, one of Lithuania’s prominent writers and the Red Cross representative in Vilnius, returned to Kaunas. The trip proved difficult: ‘As far as the eye can see . the dust rose like smoke from the road, choked with Bolsheviks and their vehicles. It was impossible to get around them, the dust infused with the unbearable smell of petrol and sweat .’ A mounted Red Army officer, ‘himself layered with dust, atop a dust-armoured horse’, helped Šeinius’s official Mercedes-Benz through the log jam —the only bright moment in the depressing montage of the invasion which he painted in his literary memoir Red Deluge .1 Unable to persuade his cabinet to authorize military resistance and determined not to preside over the country’s surrender, President Antanas Smetona opted for exile. The leader of the nation left none too soon. The presidential motorcade set out for the German border on the afternoon of 15 June just as a Soviet aeroplane carrying the Kremlin’s viceroy for Lithuania, Molotov’s deputy Vladimir Dekanozov, touched down at Kaunas airport. 2 Augustinas Voldemaras, Smetona’s long-time arch -rival , foolishly took the opportunity to return from exile in France only to be summarily arrested by the NKVD and sent to Russia. 3 The exile of inter-war Lithuania’s two most prominent politicians, one voluntary, the other forced, signalled the political This chapter includes material from two previous works of mine: ‘Foreign Saviors, Native Disciples: Perspectives on Collaboration in Lithuania, 1940–1945’, in D.
