KARTY SLOVANSKÝCH BOHYNÍ BABA JAGA Nechat jít, katarze, osvobození, roztržení pout, pouštění, transformace, stařena Baba Jaga přichází, aby ti do života pomohla integrovat její kvality. Ona poslouchá a léčí. Nebo si doma připrav solnou očistnou koupel. Dovol si vše procítit a odevzdat. Pak si do koupele můžeš přidat bylinky a vůně, aby pronikly do celého tvého těla.

Like the Romance and Germanic peoples, they are related by area and culture, not so much by blood. Today there are thirteen different Slavic groups divided into three blocs, Eastern, Southern and Western. These include the Russians, Poles, Czechs, Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Serbians,Croatians, Macedonians, Slovenians, Bulgarians, Kashubians, Albanians and Slovakians. Although the Lithuanians, Estonians and Latvians are of Baltic tribes, we are including some of their customs as they are similar to those of their Slavic neighbors. Slavic Runes were called "Runitsa", "Cherty y Rezy" ("Strokes and Cuts") and later, "Vlesovitsa".

  • Becoming Soviet: Lost Cultural Alternatives In
BECOMING SOVIET: LOST CULTURAL ALTERNATIVES IN UKRAINE, 1917-1933 Olena Palko, MA, BA (Hons.) In addition any quotation or extract must include full attribution.’ Abstract This doctoral thesis investigates the complex and multi-faceted process of the cultural sovietisation of Ukraine. The study argues that different political and cultural projects of a Soviet Ukraine were put to the test during the 1920s. These projects were developed and executed by representatives of two ideological factions within the Communist Party of Bolsheviks of Ukraine: one originating in the pre-war Ukrainian socialist and communist movements, and another with a clear centripetal orientation towards Moscow. The representatives of these two ideological horizons endorsed different approaches to defining Soviet culture. The unified Soviet canon in Ukraine was an amalgamation of at least two different Soviet cultural projects: Soviet Ukrainian culture and Soviet culture in the Ukrainian language. These two visions of Soviet culture are examined through a biographical study of two literary protagonists: the Ukrainian poet Pavlo Tychyna (1891-1967) and the writer Mykola Khvyl'ovyi (1893-1933). Overall, three equally important components, contributing to Ukraine’s sovietisation, are discussed: the power struggle among the Ukrainian communist elites; the manipulation of the tastes and expectations of the audience; and the ideological and aesthetic evolution of Ukraine’s writers in view of the first two components.

  • Contemporary Polish Surnames Motivated by Appellatives Related to Religion
DOI: 10.308161ICONN412017137 Contemporary Polish surnames motivated by appellatives related to religion Justyna B. Walkowiak Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland Abstract: Certain surnames currently used in Poland are motivated by religious terms: adjectives referring to Christian morality (Grzeszny ‘sinful’, Miłosierny ‘mer- ciful’), the Bible (Apostoł ‘apostle’, Herod, Piekielny ‘of hell’), pious exclamations (Bożemój ‘my God!’, Laboga ‘by God!’), Latin or Polish prayers (Oremus ‘let us pray’, Ojczenasz ‘Our Father’), and terms for vestments or other church objects (Rokieta ‘rochet’, Kropidło ‘aspergillum’). There is also a group related to non-Cath- olic denominations and their rituals: Luter ‘protestant’, Pogan ‘pagan’, Panachida ‘memorial service in the Eastern Orthodox Church’, Kadysz ‘Kaddish’. These sur- names are discussed with respect to their frequency and possible motivation. Keywords: surnames, religion, church, Christianity, Latin. Introduction The advent of Christianity in Poland, formally effected in 966, meant a profound cultural change which, among other spheres of social life, also had a major influence on anthroponomastics. This influence was exercised in two distinct ways. The more obvious one was the gradual replacement of the bulk of pagan personal names with Judeo-Christian onymy. The process markedly accelerated in the 16th century after the Council of Trent, though never ultimately completed (i.e. some pre-Christian names survived, and some in the 19th century underwent a revival). Less directly visible, although no less important, was the introduction of Christian culture and imagery into nicknames, later to become fixed surnames. The latter will be the subject of the present article. Over 400 surnames motivated by appellatives related to religion are discussed below.

THE COLLECTED TALES OF NIKOLAI GOGOL Translated and Annotated by RICHARD PEVEAR and LARISSA VOLOKHONSKY FIRST VINTAGE CLASSICS EDITION, JULY 1999 ISBN: 0679430237 1 Preface Art has the provinces in its blood. Art is provincial in principle, preserving for itself a naive, external, astonished and envious outlook. -Andrei Sinyavsky, In Gogol's Shadow Nikolai Vassilyevich Gogol was born on April 1, 1809, in the village of Sorochintsy, Mirgorod district, Poltava province, in the Ukraine, also known as Little Russia. His childhood was spent on Vassilyevka, a modest estate belonging to his mother. Nearby was the town of Dikanka, once the property of Kochubey, the most famous hetman of the independent Ukraine. In the church of Dikanka there was an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, for whom Gogol was named. In 1821 Gogol was sent to boarding school in Nezhin, near Kiev. He graduated seven years later, and in December 1828, at the age of nineteen, left his native province to try his fortunes in the Russian capital. There he fled from posts as a clerk in two government ministries, failed a tryout for the imperial theater (he had not been a brilliant student at school, but had shown unusual talent as a mimic and actor, and his late father had been an amateur playwright), printed at his own expense a long and very bad romantic poem, then bought back all the copies and burned them, and in 1830 published his first tale, "St. John's Eve," in the March issue of the magazine Fatherland Notes. There followed, in September 1831 and March 1832, the two volumes of Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka, each containing four tales on Ukrainian themes with a prologue by their supposed collector, the beekeeper Rusty Panko.
