Čeprav se na prvi pogled utegne zdeti kot odziv na slovenske polemike o medijski cenzuri v zadnjih letih,1 so vzroki zanjo v resnici bolj daljnosežni. Sploh zato, ker v naši postavitvi problema cenzuri enakovre- dno mesto zavzema literatura, pa tudi zato, ker vprašujoči podnaslov Kdo se boji resnice literature? ni nujno zavezan odkrivanju nekega konkretnega cenzorskega subjekta, ki bi od zunaj ogrožal literarno avtonomijo, tem- več (po tihem) sprašuje tudi, ali je literaturi sploh mogoče kar na počez pripisovati tak emancipatorični, etični naboj, ki ga evocira pojem resnica. Ravno zato je treba naslov in podnaslov pojasniti natančneje. Skušali se jima bomo približati s pomočjo dveh temeljnih motivov, ki stojita v ozad- ju te izbire. Oba sta obarvana lokalno, a kot bomo videli, imata širše implikacije. Prvi je spoznanje, da smo globoko zaznamovani s cenzurirano preteklostjo. Novejša odkritja o slovenski (jugoslovanski) kulturni zgodovini v drugi polovici 20. stoletja so pokazala, da smo živeli v skrbno očiščenem svetu z odmerjenimi dozami svobode, ki so ga obvladovali mehanizmi vlada- joče komunistične ideologije, in da so številna dejstva ostajala načrtno in sistematično potlačena in izrinjena. Živeli smo v cenzurirani kulturi, ki ni poznala uradne cenzure, a so v njej – kljub navideznim liberalizacijam – nečloveški poboji desettisočev ljudi, montirani »dachavski« procesi, Goli otok, nasilje nad drugače mislečimi in drugi zločini oblasti ostajali prikriti oziroma neizgovorljivi dolga

Before Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press in 1455, the burning ofhand-scribed books destroyed limited copies and guaranteed they would not be read. With the printing press, books could be produced in greater numbers; yet, printed speech was still a commodity that could be controlled. In 1517, Pope Leo X condemned Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses, an early example of religious censorship of materials deemed dangerous or subversive. Political censorship quickly followed when Emperor Charles V issued the Edict ofWorms, containing a "Law ofPrinting" which banned the printing, copying, sale, or reading of Luther's writings (Foerstel xi). Beginning in 1564, the Catholic papacy promulgated its Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Prohibited Books). Compiled by the Holy Inquisition in Rome, the Index listed the books and authors Catholics were prohibited from printing or reading.

The discussion of pre-censorship is often submerged within more general censorship discussions and not specifically identified. It is addressed in snippets of information revealed in interviews and responses to questionnaires concerning censorship. This study was designed to examine in detail the phenomenon of pre-censorship as experienced by Canadian children’s and young adult authors and illustrators. A qualitative, naturalistic methodology was selected to explore participants’ experiences through in-depth interviews with open-ended questions designed to encourage participants to speak at length and share thoughts, feelings, and insights. Seventeen Canadian authors and illustrators, who self-identified as having experienced pre-censorship, participated in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with all but one of the participants, whose interview was conducted by telephone and a follow-up in-person meeting. Most participants requested confidentiality, wishing to keep their names and the titles of the books undisclosed. Participants provided concrete examples of how pre-censorship was experienced by authors and illustrators. Types of pre-censorship were identified. Reasons given for pre- censorship make clear that marketing and sales concerns as well as a fear of censorship after publication are dominant motivating factors.

But the manner of thinking of a head of state who favours such enlightenment goes even further and sees that even with regard to his own legislation there is no danger in allowing his subjects to make public use of their reason and to lay publicly before the world their thoughts about a better formulation of this legislation as well as a candid criticism of laws already given. We have a shining example of this, in which no monarch has yet surpassed the one we honour.

    From The Butcher Shop to The Peaceful Pill: A history of book censorship in New Zealand. - Paper presented at the LIANZA 2010 Conference in November 2010. The media which our society produces and consumes has always been cause for debate about the effects, positive or negative (though more often than not focussing on the negative), on its audience. From the influence of the written word on perceptions of religion and politics, to the concerns over films chipping away at society‟s moral fibre, to the debates over whether video games make people violent – the media, who accesses it and who stops them has been a constantly evolving and ongoing story both in New Zealand and around the world. Today, I‟m going to share a chapter of that story with you by looking at how censorship in New Zealand has evolved over the last 100 years or so. We‟ll look at the sort of content that has been subject to censorship, the various systems and bodies that have been created over the years to deal with this, and how the issue of book censorship has fitted into the broader story of censorship in New Zealand. I should begin by saying that we don‟t have a lot of information about the censorship of non- film publications prior to the creation of the Indecent Publications Tribunal in 1963. The main reason for this is that prior to 1963 book censorship was not the primary function of any organisation – instead it was the responsibility of New Zealand Customs operating under the Indecent Publications Act of 1910.

Conversation around this subject has, however, been superficial, lacking in both historical and empirical depth. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the origin, methods and motivations of censorship in Nigeria with a view to deepening the understanding of this phenomenon. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected offline and online using document analysis and interviews were analysed by simple percentages and the constant comparative method. Findings indicate that book censorship began in 1805, over two centuries ago. Eleven methods, including, burning, banning and bombing have been employed and three major motivations (political, religious and socio-cultural) were identified.

    Point: Book Censorship is an Attack on the Freedom of the Press. Thesis: The First Amendment, basically, grants American citizens the right to access, publish, or broadcast any content as long as it does not infringe upon the rights or safety of others. The right to a free press is threatened by censorship of existing media and by prevention of the publication or broadcast of certain content. Summary: Censorship of books and other publications is the most significant threat to modern media. Organizations and individuals continue to call for the censorship of books, websites, magazines and newspapers on the basis of "obscenity" or "maintaining public order." Though state and local governments have created numerous censorship guidelines, the Supreme Court has routinely upheld the right of free choice for adult consumers. The situation is markedly different in foreign countries, particularly China, which employs sophisticated internet filtering technology to keep its citizens from accessing a free range of information. During times of crisis, challenges to freedom of expression become more pronounced. It is not unusual for governments to attempt to thwart subversion and dissent by restricting the exchange of information between citizens. Libel (a civil, and in some countries, a criminal, action seeking to punish false or defamatory publications) and prior restraint (a doctrine permitting government to take action against errant speech before it is published) have been used, historically, to prevent the press from effectively monitoring the activities of government and interest groups. A series of landmark cases has validated the rights of the press to inform the public on political issues.

Debates on art censorship often have proved to offer a fertile ground for research on the issues of art, autonomy and freedom. Through an analysis of four case studies, this study aims to offer an analytical survey on censorship on visual arts in Đstanbul from the recent historical context of 2002 – 2009, during the rule of recent Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP – Justice and Development Party) government. The selected cases are situated within the framework of modernization, political Islam and Kemalism and are analysed as cultural expressions of the contemporary Turkish political scene. The cases are selected according to the variety and the possibilities offered by the censorship mechanisms as well as the positioning of the artists within the processes. Interviews with the artists discuss (a) the norms of censorship; (b) the engagements of the artists within the processes; (c) self-censorship; (d) the censors’ justifications for each case. The research suggests that although recent censorship on visual arts in Turkey always reflects a specific socio-cultural context, the general formulation of censorship has its roots in moral justifications, in both political Islam and the state nationalism, as a response directed against the representators of any kind of perceived oppositon in its political and social sense.
