CENSORSHIP AND THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH ti Well, here it is, the longest issue of the ARIZONA ENGLISH BULLETIN we'veever done, 263'pages crammed full of ideas and facts and technique, aboutcensorship and fighting censorship. The bibliography is the longest we'veever printed and the number of articles beats anything before, and we think it's eminently worth read- ing, all of it. Censorship has always been a hot and worrisome thingfor teachers, particularly English teachers, and when this issue was in its planningstages about a year ago, we knew the topic was worth doing again. Our earlier issue on censor- ship (FebruarY'1969) will seemed worthwhile butdated and the Fargo, North Dakota, mess was very.much in the news, and those two reasons alone made the topic worth do'ng. Since that time the West Virginia textbook situation has beenwith us, and censorship if anything seems to be getting worse and Englishteachers are even more concerned about it. This issue has material from manysources and many states: the survey of our own state and censorship conditions here; brief comments about censorship in several other states; a repot from the Phoenix Freedom forReaders group; two comments by librarians; remarks about censorship in the elementary school;a couple of cases for a rational censorship; two articles about racism and censorship;one article by Bruce Severy who was at the heart (or bowels) of the NorthDakota bookburning and another article reacting to the news about the bookburning;a statement about student rights in high school journalism; an article bya publisher and his attitudes towards censorship; a couple of articles about film censorship;a comment urging English teachers to recruit their students in the battle against censorship;two articles from organizations (ALA and Media Coalition) tightingcensorship; several articles about specific censorship incidents; severalstatements about the English teacher as a censor; an article arguing that school boards need for their own-saketo establish policy guidelines to protect students and educationfrom unwarranted attack; a comment on the student's right to write; specific recommendationsfor schools to follow in preparing for the censor;a warning that censorship cases are likely to increase; an argument that minority literature hasbeen censored by exclusion from textbooks; and several articles about the history of censorship. It is a rich and varied issue despite the fact that

    RSA JOU R N A L 25/2014 GIULIANA MUS C IO A Transcultural Perspective on the Casting of The Rose Tattoo A transcultural perspective on the film The Rose Tattoo (Daniel Mann, 1955), written by Tennessee Williams, is motivated by its setting in an Italian-American community (specifically Sicilian) in Louisiana, and by its cast, which includes relevant Italian participation. A re-examination of its production and textuality illuminates not only Williams’ work but also the cultural interactions between Italy and the U.S. On the background, the popularity and critical appreciation of neorealist cinema.1 The production of the film The Rose Tattoo has a complicated history, which is worth recalling, in order to capture its peculiar transcultural implications in Williams’ own work, moving from some biographical elements. In the late 1940s Tennessee Williams was often traveling in Italy, and visited Sicily, invited by Luchino Visconti (who had directed The Glass Managerie in Rome, in 1946) for the shooting of La terra trema (1948), where he went with his partner Frank Merlo, an occasional actor of Sicilian origins (Williams, Notebooks 472). Thus his Italian experiences involved both his professional life, putting him in touch with the lively world of Italian postwar theater and film, and his affections, with new encounters and new friends. In the early 1950s Williams wrote The Rose Tattoo as a play for Anna Magnani, protagonist of the neorealist masterpiece Rome Open City (Roberto Rossellini, 1945). However, the Italian actress was not yet comfortable with acting in English and therefore the American stage version (1951) starred Maureen Stapleton instead and Method actor Eli Wallach.

    Saugata Bhaduri Polycolonial Angst: Representations of Spain in Early Modern English Drama One of the important questions that this conference1 requires us to explore is how Spain was represented in early modern English theatre, and to examine such representation especially against the backdrop of the emergence of these two nations as arguably the most important players in the unfolding game of global imperialism. This is precisely what this article proposes to do: to take up representative English plays of the period belonging to the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) which do mention Spain, analyse what the nature of their treat- ment of Spain is and hypothesise as to what may have been the reasons behind such a treatment.2 Given that England and Spain were at bitter war during these twenty years, and given furthermore that these two nations were the most prominent rivals in the global carving of the colonial pie that had already begun during this period, the commonsensical expectation from such plays, about the way Spain would be represented in them, should be of unambiguous Hispanophobia. There were several contextual reasons to occasion widespread Hispanophobia in the period. His footnotes, which often perplex readers by their very presence in a work of fiction, allow Yunior an intimate space in which he may bring language to the enigmatic truths of his trauma as a subject who subconsciously carries the burden of Dominican history; an impossible past wrought by Spanish conquest, the slave trade and the consequent economy of breeding people, the U.S. backed dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina in the Dominican Republic for most of the presumably enlightened twentieth century, and the alienation of Dominican diaspora seeking liberty and opportunity within the contemporary United States. Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score.

Before Johannes Gutenberg introduced the printing press in 1455, the burning ofhand-scribed books destroyed limited copies and guaranteed they would not be read. With the printing press, books could be produced in greater numbers; yet, printed speech was still a commodity that could be controlled. In 1517, Pope Leo X condemned Martin Luther's Ninety Five Theses, an early example of religious censorship of materials deemed dangerous or subversive. Political censorship quickly followed when Emperor Charles V issued the Edict ofWorms, containing a "Law ofPrinting" which banned the printing, copying, sale, or reading of Luther's writings (Foerstel xi). Beginning in 1564, the Catholic papacy promulgated its Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Prohibited Books). Compiled by the Holy Inquisition in Rome, the Index listed the books and authors Catholics were prohibited from printing or reading.
