Reconceptualizing the Alien: Jews in Modern Ukrainian Thought*
Ab Imperio, 4/2003 Yohanan PETROVSKY-SHTERN RECONCEPTUALIZING THE ALIEN: JEWS IN MODERN UKRAINIAN THOUGHT* To love ones motherland is no crime. From Zalyvakhas letter to Svitlychnyi, Chornovil, and Lukho. Whoever in hunger eats the grass of the motherland is no criminal. Andrei Platonov, The Sand Teacher Perhaps one of the most astounding phenomena in modern Ukrainian thought is the radical reassessment of the Jew. Though the revision of Jew- ish issues began earlier in the 20th century, if not in the late 19th, it became particularly salient as part of the new political narrative after the “velvet revolution” of 1991 that led to the demise of the USSR and the establish- * I gratefully acknowledge the help of two anonymous reviewers of Ab Imperio whose insightful comments helped me considerably to improve this paper. The new Ukrainian perception of the Jew boldly challenged the received bias and created a new social and political environment fostering the renaissance of Jewish culture in Ukraine, let alone Ukrainian-Jewish dialogue. There were a number of ways to explain what had happened. For some, the sudden Ukrainian-Jewish rapprochement was a by-product of the new western-oriented post-1991 Ukrainian foreign pol- icy. -

Iuliia Kysla
Rethinking the Postwar Era: Soviet Ukrainian Writers Under Late Stalinism, 1945-1949 by Iuliia Kysla A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Iuliia Kysla, 2018 Abstract This dissertation advances the study of late Stalinism, which has until recently been regarded as a bizarre appendage to Stalin’s rule, and aims to answer the question of whether late Stalinism was a rupture with or continuation of its prewar precursor. I analyze the reintegration of Ukrainian writers into the postwar Soviet polity and their adaptation to the new realities following the dramatic upheavals of war. Focusing on two parallel case studies, Lviv and Kyiv, this study explores how the Soviet regime worked with members of the intelligentsia in these two cities after 1945, at a time when both sides were engaged in “identification games.” This dissertation demonstrates that, despite the regime’s obsession with control, there was some room for independent action on the part of Ukrainian writers and other intellectuals. Authors exploited gaps in Soviet discourse to reclaim agency, which they used as a vehicle to promote their own cultural agendas. Unlike the 1930s, when all official writers had to internalize the tropes of Soviet culture, in the postwar years there was some flexibility in an author’s ability to accept or reject the Soviet system. Moreover, this dissertation suggests that Stalin’s postwar cultural policy—unlike the strategies of the 1930s, which relied predominantly on coercive tactics—was defined mainly by discipline by humiliation, which often involved bullying and threatening members of the creative intelligentsia. -
Biografia Del Cardinale Silvano Piovanelli

6. the Growth of Democratic Opposition
6 THE GROWTH OF DEMOCRATIC OPPOSITION Baltic echoes As the crucial Nineteenth Party Conference approached, the politi• cal struggle in Moscow intensified. It also raised hopes and further stimulated independent political activity. Throughout the Soviet Union, conservative forces batded to keep the reformists at bay and to prevent the selection of democratically minded delegates to the conference. Indeed, the conservative resistance was so strong that the elections, scheduled for April, were delayed for six weeks. Even then, charges of ballot-rigging abounded, making a mockery of the supposed shift towards more democratic elections. The dissatisfaction with this state of affairs precipitated the first attempts to form mass grass-roots movements for genuine democratization and reform —the so-called popular democratic fronts. The need for new independent organizations which would mobilize the public behind Gorbachev's restructuring drive was increasingly recognized during the first half of 1988 by leading Russian reformist intellectuals, such as Boris Kurashvili and Tatyana Zaslavskaya. They realized that the reformers in the Party would not be able to defeat the conservatives with the help of the liberal intelligentsia alone, and therefore began calling on the public to lend its support by organizing popular unions, or fronts, to promote restructuring.1 Zaslavskaya, interviewed in Izvestiya on 4 June, pointed to the example already being set by the Estonians, who were the first to demonstrate how powerful a force for change popular fronts could be.
