  • THE EXPERTS of LITHUANIAN in SERVICE of the RUSSIAN EMPIRE: DMITRIIKASHIRIN, ZAKHARIILYATSKII, and ANDRIUS POIDENAS Summary
Giedrius Subačius THE EXPERTS OF LITHUANIAN IN SERVICE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE: DMITRIIKASHIRIN, ZAKHARIILYATSKII, AND ANDRIUS POIDENAS Summary From 1795 to 1914 the Russian Empire controlled Lithuania. It instilled a ban on Latin letters for Lithuanian texts that lasted for almost forty years (1865-1904). During that time almost sixty Lithuanian books in Cyrillic (i.e., Russian) letters were printed mostly by the initiative of the imperial administrators in Lithuania. Underground Lithuanian books and newspapers were printed in Latin script abroad and dispersed by knygnesiai (book carriers) and read illegally in Lithuania. At the same time, schools that had been teaching Lithuanian were also closed and so-called public "Russian schools" were introduced as a countermeasure to the spreading network of under ground private "home" schools, which taught Lithuanian in Latin script. The book The Experts of Lithuanian in Service of the Russian Empire: Dmitrii Kashirin, Zakharii Lyatskii, and Andrius Poidenas (Vilnius: Institute of the Lithuanian Language, 2011) recounts linguistic biographies of the three experts who served the administra tion of the Vilnius Education District to prepare, edit, evaluate, review, and correct certain Lithuanian texts in Cyrillic. Most of the Lithuanian Cyrillic texts approved by the imperial administrators in the Vilnius Education District were distributed to the schools and the populace in the form of primers and public readings. In the rare cases of private initiatives to print Lithuanian books in Cyrillic alphabet (e.g., that of Juozapas Miliauskas), the experts were used by the administrators to criticize and to reject the unwelcome proposals. By and large this book deals with the life and work of Kashirin, Lyatskii, and Poidenas: the three experts producing and evaluating Lithuanian Cyrillic during the 1867-1901 period of the ban on Latin script.

Subsequent fate of these dictionaries, compiled by bilingual authors natives of the Lithuanian petty nobility (Polish: drobna szlachta), proved to be extremely complex, and many of the works were lost once and for all. Lithuanists have been lively interested in the preserved manuscripts, treating them as an interesting source for researching Lithuanian language of the 19th century. It was much later that Polish linguists developed interest in this important legacy. Over the last decade, some of the translation dictionaries were published as duplicate originals: the Samogitian-Polish Dictionary (attached to the anonymous grammar from years 1820–1830); the Polish- Lithuanian, three-volume dictionary by Szymon Dowkont (Lithuanian: Simonas Daukantas), carefully edited by Giedrius Subačius; and the master critical three- volume edition of Polish-Lithuanian Dictionary by Wawrzyniec Iwiński (Lithuanian: Laurynas Ivinskis), prepared by Ona Kažukauskaitė and Rita Šepetytė in 2010. These sources have given an open access to valuable resources for the Polish language historians, documenting nineteenth-century Polish of bilingual and bicultural writers from ethnic Lithuania.

  • Development of the Cyrillic Orthography for Lithuanian in 1864‒1904
DEVELOPMENT OF THE CYRILLIC ORTHOGRAPHY FOR LITHUANIAN IN 1864–1904 GIEDRIUS SUBAČIUS University of Illinois at Chicago; Research Institute of Lithuanian Language, Vilnius In this article, I attempt to delineate the major trends in philological and sociolinguistic development of the Cyrillic script used for Lithuanian in Lithuania and Poland. After the failure of the insurrection in 1863 by Poland and Lithuania against Russia, Russian authorities initiated certain radical changes in the cultural life of Lithuania. One of them was a ban to use Latin letters for publications in the Lithuanian lan‐ guage and forceful introduction of the Cyrillic alphabet in‐ stead (the ban lasted from 1864 to 1904). Lithuania, a pre‐ dominantly Catholic country, had a tradition of using Latin script (or a Gothic modification of it) for more than three cen‐ turies, and this attempt to instill different letters was a very unexpected undertaking for most Lithuanians. Statistics show that, in the course of these forty years of prohibition, there were approximately sixty books published in Cyrillic Lithuanian. On average, this makes for a book and a half a year. Even for a nation of approximately two million people at that time, this number is very insignificant. By then, all people in Lithuania had become free under the law (the emancipation of serfs took place in 1861). This type of society was much more mobile. Literacy was steadily growing and 29 the demand for books was obviously much greater than one and a half per annum. The other figure of relevance here is the almost four thousand (3,953) Lithuanian books and pamphlets that were published in the Latin and Gothic alphabet in the same forty years (not including periodicals).

Changing relationships between authors and publishers: Lithuania Major in the first half of the 19th century Aušra Navickienė, [email protected] Institute of Book Science and Documentation, Faculty of Communication, Vilnius University Libellarium, VI, 1 – 2 (2013): 29 – 42. UDC: 655.52’’18’’(474.5) Proceedings of the International conference Publishing – trends and contents, Pula, Croatia, 6-7 December 2013 Summary The changing relationship between authors and publishers was a phenomenon related to the model of modern book publishing business which began to emerge in Lithuania Major, as well as throughout much of Central and Eastern Europe in the early 19th century. The topic of this research is the legal framework established in 1830 as part of Russian censorship laws intended to regulate property rights of authors and publishers, which was also applied in the occupied territory of Lithuania. Different sources and methods were used in this article to answer to the following questions: “How were the rights and obligations of authors and publishers understood in documents regulating publishing activities in Lithuania Major in the first decades of the 19th century (i.e. before 1830)?”; “How was this concept legitimized in the first legal enactments regulating copyrights (i.e. after the introduction of regulations)?”; “How were these mutually useful relationships reflected in Lithuanian book publishing before the Russian occupational government imposed radical measures to restrict Lithuanian national culture and publishing in 1864?” The main sources of data were the 19th century official and unofficial documents regulating publishing activities (including, most importantly, the censorship laws of the time) and archival materials documenting the activities of Lithuanian private publishers and book authors of the time, such as correspondence and documentation on the activities of publishing institutions.

  • Vytautas Merkys. Simonas Daukantas

  • Footprints of Lithuanians in America
Footprints of Lithuanians in America Stasys Bačkaitis Great Falls, VA June 2017 Edited by Emilis Urba Vilnius, Lithuania Foreword This narrative is dedicated to all those Lithuanian Americans who did not live to tell or to those still living and wondering about their roots and experiences their ancestors had to endure in the hope of creating a more meaningful and better life for themselves and their future generations. Unlike fragmented narrations of limited in time events that currently exist in the English language literature about Lithuanians in America, this presentation weaves together an overall picture of their struggle, perseverance, triumphs, and care for their subjugated homeland under circumstances that at many times seemed hopeless. This story might be of interest also to a broader English speaking audience about survival and growth of a determined people under seemingly doomed to failure conditions. Introduction Lithuania is a small European nation that was ripped apart in the XVII and XVIII centuries by Russia’s invasions and, subsequently, by more than a century of on and off wars on its soil between Germany and Russia. As a result, a significant part of its population has vanished either as war casualties, purposeful atrocities by occupiers, deportations, fleeing terror, and emigration. These unfortunate events and Russia’s brutal occupation of Lithuania for over 120 years since 1795 and then again for 50 years, caused nearly a third of Lithuania’s population to escape to the west. A majority of them eventually immigrated to the United States, where they found, after a few very difficult years, a chance to live in peace and freedom and more lasting economic opportunity.
