The Image of the Peasant Within National Museums in the Nordic Countries
The Image of the Peasant within National Museums in the Nordic Countries Peter Aronsson National narratives are crucial to the construction of legitimate citizenship: who belongs to what community, what qualifies inclusion and exclusion, what virtues are celebrated and what vices are refuted? These questions do not have arbitrary answers, but instead are connected to rather stable ideas of states and nation, and are continuously changing alongside the emergence of new ideals and new territorial boundaries. The new ideas, which restructured earlier sets of feudal relationships at the turns of 18th and 19th centuries, show a remarkable resemblance, at least superficially, to those appearing in many parts of the world where social and political conditions might instead imply a greater variety of ideals. Cultural transfer and the creation of narratives of uniqueness appear hand in hand. The idea of citizenship itself might be seen as an infusion of aristocratic ideas of individual rights into a bourgeois setting, a Bürgerlische Öffentlich- keit, developing an independent sphere of equality, freedom of speech, toler- ance, and mutual respect. But at the same time as rapid change and turmoil, historical vision imagery was transformed from an earlier construction of a glorious past with Biblical and classical references into a national history where the persistence of an independent peasant culture that supposedly thrived before the development of a stratified society and the state created a decisive starting point. This is true for 19th century cultural Swedish heroes such as E.G. Geijer and E. Tegnér – but also for Karl Marx. This is the case for Sweden, which had a large number of historical free-owning peasantry within 18th and 19th C societies, but also for Denmark, which had just created a class of that standard, and for Iceland, which was more dominated by fish- ing than by toiling the soil, and finally for Romania. -

The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Benjamin Martin (Institutionen för idé- och lärdomshistoria). Abstract Thompson, C. 2018. Norges Våpen. Cultural Memory and Uses of History in Norwegian Black Metal. Studia Historica Upsaliensia 263. 221 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-513-0505-9. This dissertation examines uses of history and expressions of cultural memory in Norwegian black metal. Formed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Norwegian black metal seemed at odds with many of the stereotypes of Norway. The genre is an extreme style of heavy metal music that has been associated with burning churches, desecrating graves, and committing murders. Yet, Norway is often perceived as wealthy with sublime natural beauty and high levels of equality. Since the late 1990s, Norwegian black metal has increasingly received positive recognition and support from Norwegian government agencies and cultural institutions who have deemed this style of music a cultural product of Norway. In exploring the relationship between Norwegian black metal and Norway, two primary questions are asked: what makes Norwegian black metal ‘Norwegian’ and what are its influences? To answer these questions, a theoretical approach based on Astrid Erll’s cultural memory complex is used. -

c 2011 by Cathrine Blom. All rights reserved. KJERULF AND WELHAVEN: THE ADVENT OF ROMANTIC LIEDER AND POETRY IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NORWAY BY CATHRINE BLOM DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor William Kinderman, Chair and Director of Research Professor Christina Bashford Professor Gayle Sherwood Magee Professor Rochelle Wright Abstract This thesis traces the development of the romantic Lied and poetry in Norway in the first half of the nineteenth century, a development driven by by two closely intertwined figures, the composer Halfdan Kjerulf (1815-1868) and the poet Johan Sebastian Cammermeyer Welhaven (1807-1873). Welhaven was Norway’s first Romantic poet in the Heidelberg tra- dition, a trend which took its inspiration from folklore, folk music, and medieval myths. His probing nationalistic depiction of nature, interwoven with supernatural folkloristic elements, and his elegiac-erotic and lyrical poetry inspired Kjerulf to create the Norwegian romance, Den norske romanse, modeling it initially on the German Lied. During the years from 1840 to 1868, Kjerulf set 43 Welhaven poems to music – 24 for solo voice and piano – and with his more than 130 songs established the Norwegian art-song that Edvard Grieg would build on during the decades following Kjerulf’s death. After presenting the cultural and political background in Norway, the intertwined lives of the poet and composer and their European cultural heritage, this thesis turns to a detailed analysis of the complete Welhaven romances for one voice, and demonstrates how Kjerulf and Welhaven, initially oriented towards Denmark and Europe, the Danish language and the German Lied, developed a growing appreciation for national traits and language. -
Innledning Til En Historiefaglig Biografi Tillegg Til Nansen

This chapter explores how these two tapestries came into being and asks how the Crusader king became a relevant symbol for the Norwegian nation around 1900. The iconography of the tapestries is analysed and compared to the narrative of King Sigurd as it is told in The Saga of the Sons of Magnús from the thirteenth century. The comparison reflects different versions of King Sigurd, as well as changing perceptions of Jerusalem. In the art collection of the Royal Palace in Oslo there are two monumental tapestries representing the Norwegian king Sigurd Magnusson (c.1090–1130) in Jerusalem and Constantinople (Figs. 28.1 and 28.2). The tapestries were made in 1900, almost 800 years after the king’s journey. King Sigurd travelled from Norway in 1108 and reached the Holy Land in the year 1111. The expedition earned him the byname Jorsalfare in Norwegian [Jerusalem-traveller], after the Old Norse name for Jerusalem: Jorsal.1 In English he is often called Sigurd the Crusader, pointing to the purpose of the journey. -
