The following 15 articles are written by scholars from Norway, Denmark and Iceland. In May 2015, the research group arranged a kick-off workshop, and during the autumn we organized two seminars, each followed by workshop: ‘Honour, war and violence in literature’ (25 September), and ‘The welfare state and the fall of honour groups’ (20 November). In Spring 2016, the Master’ course NOR4460 Lit- erature and honour was a part of the teaching portfolio at the Department of Lin- guistics and Scandinavian Studies. It was led by Thorstein Norheim, and several of the contributors to this volume, and research group members, contributed with lectures. The course generated several Master’s theses related to the honour con- cept. In August 2016, Cecilie Takle initiated her Ph.D.-project, ‘Honor Codes in Contemporary Scandinavian Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults’. We would like to thank the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Oslo for the financial support, which helped us to initiate the research group and work out the research project. We are particularly grateful to Per Thomas Andersen for his major role in initiating this, and outlining the research project. We would also like to thank Stefka Georgieva Eriksen for her contribution during the start-up phase and the first seminars. This OA-book is financially supported by the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies, University of Oslo, by the Publishing fund for UiO researchers, and the foundation Fritt Ord. Foreword C. Claire Thomson, UCL Confronting Klaus Rifbjerg Én, to, tre uforståelig sammensmelten af to organismer flihankat og grunden er lagt til det bedste af alt at eksistere. (‘Undfangelse’, Under Vejr med mig selv, 1956) One, two, three a bafing fusion of two organisms abracadabra and the ground is laid for the best thing of all – to exist. (‘Conception’, Setting Sail with Myself, 1956, my translation) With this playful depiction of the first moment of his existence, the 25-year-old Klaus Rifbjerg burst onto the Danish literary scene of 1956. His debut collection as a poet was entitled Under vejr med mig selv, which translates roughly as ‘Setting Sail with Myself’. It was startling enough that this sequence of poems described conception, gestation, birth, childhood and youth, but the language employed by Rifbjerg to take the reader on this journey was equally iconoclastic. The ‘I’ of the second poem in the collection introduces himself as fosterfisk, (foetus-fish) — a compound noun at once irreverent, inconsonant, and absolutely right. For Rifbjerg, and for his contemporary Leif Panduro, the solemnity of post-war Danish literature was ripe for rejuvenation through linguistic experimentation and an 7 C. Claire Thomson engagement with the everyday. Their brand of modernism took its name from Rifbjerg’s third poetry collection of 1960, Konfrontation (Confrontation). In the decade that followed, this ‘confrontation-modernism’ enacted the encounter of the individual with a world that was, to paraphrase a famous line from the anthology, blessedly empty, except for things. This was a material world of fesh and blood, of technology, and of words that collided to generate new and often joyous perspectives on existence.

  • Sundman Wrote in an Article in 1970 ("Om Att Overtolka" BLM)
    40. Sundman wrote in an article in 1970 ("Om att overtolka" B.L.M.) that Olle Stensson, the "I" of Tvl1 dagar, tv8 natter, is not a wholly reliable narrator. He gives obviously wrong information time and again. So even if we read the text very closely we still have this extra factor to contend with. But this is the strength of Sundman's writing. We are given exact descriptions of physical events, but there are almost no metaphors and no vague formulations about moral or aesthetic values. We aren't even sure when an action begins and ends. We don't know what is of particular significance. The result is that we read everything carefully, not wanting to miss any clues. We also come to realise that our interpretations will differ from those of other readers; that because of what we are we'll notice or respond to some details and not others. In the end this leads at best to a realisation of the fact that no event is an open and shut case, which must surely be a healthy sign in a community which values human rights. The following English translations of Sundman's novels have appeared: The Expedz"tz"on (ExpeditionenJ 1967, Seeker and Warburg. Two Days, Two Nz"ghts (Tva dagar, tvt natter) 1969 Panthean books. The Fl£ght of the Eagle (Ingenjor Andrees luftfard) 1970 Seeker and Warburg. • The Image of the Peasant Within National Museums in the Nordic Countries
The Image of the Peasant within National Museums in the Nordic Countries Peter Aronsson National narratives are crucial to the construction of legitimate citizenship: who belongs to what community, what qualifies inclusion and exclusion, what virtues are celebrated and what vices are refuted? These questions do not have arbitrary answers, but instead are connected to rather stable ideas of states and nation, and are continuously changing alongside the emergence of new ideals and new territorial boundaries. The new ideas, which restructured earlier sets of feudal relationships at the turns of 18th and 19th centuries, show a remarkable resemblance, at least superficially, to those appearing in many parts of the world where social and political conditions might instead imply a greater variety of ideals. Cultural transfer and the creation of narratives of uniqueness appear hand in hand. The idea of citizenship itself might be seen as an infusion of aristocratic ideas of individual rights into a bourgeois setting, a Bürgerlische Öffentlich- keit, developing an independent sphere of equality, freedom of speech, toler- ance, and mutual respect. But at the same time as rapid change and turmoil, historical vision imagery was transformed from an earlier construction of a glorious past with Biblical and classical references into a national history where the persistence of an independent peasant culture that supposedly thrived before the development of a stratified society and the state created a decisive starting point. This is true for 19th century cultural Swedish heroes such as E.G. Geijer and E. Tegnér – but also for Karl Marx. This is the case for Sweden, which had a large number of historical free-owning peasantry within 18th and 19th C societies, but also for Denmark, which had just created a class of that standard, and for Iceland, which was more dominated by fish- ing than by toiling the soil, and finally for Romania.
