Begović V., Schrunk I., Kereković D. (2011). The project “A new GIS procedure for the reconstruction of the landscape in classical antiquity (territory of today Croatia)”. In: D. Kereković, R. Źróbek (ed.). The Future with GIS. Croatian Information Technology Association – GIS Forum, University of Silesia, Zagreb, 82-93. THE PROJECT "A NEW GIS PROCEDURE FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE LANDSCAPE IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY (territory of today Croatia)" Vlasta Begović Institute of Archaeology Gajeva 32, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia Ivančica Schrunk University of St. Thomas St. Paul, Minnesota 55105, USA Davorin Kereković GIS Forum Ilica 191 e, 10 000 Zagreb, Croatia Abstract In the course of the ongoing research project “Archaeological Topography of Croatia in Classical Antiquity” the application of a new GIS procedure made it possible to make reconstructions of some Roman sites and past landscapes (landscape in classical antiquity) on the territory of today Croatia. The GIS approach to the study of changes in historical landscapes indicated that the greatest transformation of the landscape occurred in the Roman period. Territorial creativity was high in the Roman time, when a completely new landscape identity appeared after the 2nd/1st century BC in Dalmatia and Histria, and after the 1st century AD in Pannonia. The new markers in the landscape consisted of: 1) Military camps; 2) Cities – colonies and settlements; 3) Roman villas; 4) A network of roads and aqueducts. Agro-forestry landscapes were unbalanced even in prehistory, with clearing of forests and expansion of agriculture. However, the most noticeable changes came in the Roman period with new exploitation of the land and the intensive planting of new cash crops - grape (vineyards) and olive trees in Dalmatia and Histria, and wheat and other cereals in Pannonia.

  • Q.Ne.ST DC2.5 Publications on Capitalized Best Practices and Routes
Q.ne.S.T. DC2.5 Publications on Capitalized best practices and routes: revised reports and informative sheets on the capitalization activities on best practices and routes. Istria (Croatia) _______________________ QNeST International Itineraries: Wine and Olive Oil Itinerary The theme of the Mediterranean Diet, with a particular focus on oil and wine, runs through all the countries of the EUSAIR area. The landscapes, characterised by olive groves and vineyards, bear witness to the common culture of the Euro-Mediterranean area, although each region has its own cultivars and production techniques. Oil and wine have always been used not just in food, but also in the rituals of the various belief systems practised on the shores of the Mediterranean. All the areas involved in the QNeST brand are crossed by routes linked to oil and wine. In Puglia, the greenways involving olive groves and vineyards are characterised by centuries-old monumental olive trees and olive oil mills, extensive vineyards and wineries. Along these routes in Xanthi, the olive trees stand out in all their majesty, while the wine route bears witness to the region's historic identity. The olive route in Epirus also highlights the bond between the centuries- old olive trees and the region. In the Marche region, the "Emotions without Borders" and "Experience the Region" routes allow you to discover the wealth of local heritage. The "Cycling through the Wineries" route allows you to enjoy the wineries in the Euganean Hills in Veneto in combination with the spas in the area. The vineyards and wineries of Montenegro are a constant theme of the "Historic and Natural treasure Route".

CRACOW LANDSCAPE MONOGRAPHS Landscape as impulsion for culture: research, perception & protection ISTRIA, CROATIA: ANCIENT SETTLEMENTS IN LANDSCAPE Klara Buršić-Matijašić1; Robert Matijašić2 ABSTRACT The Istrian peninsula has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, but only Bronze / Iron Age hilltop settlements have had a significant impact on the landscape. More than 400 sites have been identified, and it is not difficult to establish a relationship between the geomorphology of the land and the anthropized / anthropic landscape. A radical change occurred in the landscape with the roman conquest and romanization: hilltops were abandoned and new settlements appeared. Urban settlements were organized for the first time, while the countryside was dotted with farms (villae rusticae). The number of sites remained roughly the same, but their distribution is quite different. The Roman Age villas were positioned mainly along the western coast and within a few kilometers from it, and almost all on flat land suitable for mediterranean agriculture. During the transition to the Middle Ages some open sites were gradually abbandoned, others were nucleized with the formation of villages, some hilltops were resettled and fortified. These processes had an important impact on the formation of the modern istrian landscape. Keywords Istria, Prehistory, Antiquity, settlements, landscape 1. INTRODUCTION The Mediterranean setting of Istria, a Karstic region in the Northern Adriatic has deeply influenced the settlement of the territory. The peninsula has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, but Bronze and Iron Age hilltop settlements have had a great impact on the landscape. More than 400 such sites have been identified, and it is not difficult to recognize a relationship between the geomorphology of the land and the anthropized/anthropic landscape.

CROATIA – Istria and the Dalmatian coast THE PREHISTORIC SOCIETY OVERSEAS STUDY TOUR 2005 Monday 12 September – Monday 19 September 2005 (8 days) guided by Dr. Preston Miracle with help from Croatian archaeological colleagues price £1150 (single supplement £175) – all-inclusive except for lunch Day 7 & 8 and drinks Croatia is full of riches for the prehistorian, and the natural setting of its archaeological heritage is one of the most dramatic (and relatively undeveloped) in Mediterranean Europe. The tour will focus on the Adriatic coast from Pula to Dubrovnik. This is a karstic, limestone landscape riddled with caves (many full of prehistoric remains), with only pockets of arable land surrounded by tumuli, hillforts, and other prehistoric settlements. We will visit sites from the Mousterian to the Iron Age. Croatia is famous for having some of the youngest Neandertal remains from Europe, and we will have a chance to visit the site of Mujina Cave, which preserves a very late Mousterian stone tool assemblage. Other caves on our itinerary – Vela Spila and Kopačina – document the cultures of Upper Palaeolithic peoples, while Pupićina Cave is the richest Mesolithic site in Croatia. We will track the spread of the Neolithic down the Dalmatian Coast and back in time, visiting some of the key sites (Pupićina Cave, Kargadur/Vižula, Danilo, Nakovana). Along the way we will also examine the explosion of Bronze and Iron Age hillforts and tumuli on rocky promontories and the edge of arable land at sites like Škrip, Vidova Gora, and Monkodonja. Our trip through prehistory ends at the Iron Age Illyrian “shrine” in Nakovana Cave and the ritual landscape beneath the cave.
