Traditional Greek Dance and Theatre1
TRADITIONAL GREEK DANCE AND THEATRE1 I R E N E L OUTZAKI Abstract In modern Greece staged folk dance performances focus on the representation of a scenario. The outcome of aesthetic experience depends on the narrative forwarded by the organizers of the event. By comparing the master narratives of three dance groups – more specifically, a “national” example, an experienced “traditional” example from one site, and a third example of “historic” evolution – the paper proposes a framework for understanding staged folk dance in Greece. It juxtaposes issues such as: dance movements, dancer’s body, costumes, staging approaches, and the audience. The paper concludes with suggestions of starting a critical dialogue with dance teachers/choreographers in the hope of creating alternative approaches to staged performances of Greek folk dances. Keywords Greece; narrative analysis; staging; performances; folk dances It is an established fact that over the past twenty years a significant growth is observed in the scholarship on traditional dance in Greece. Meanwhile, most publications are preoccupied with the potential benefits of traditional dance in education. And to a great extent this may be justified. From 1980 onward, when Greek dances are established as a discipline2 and their instruction is in- tegrated into the school curriculum, a similar interest is observed among other educational institu- tions (e.g. cultural organizations, dance groups, and various dance schools that integrated teaching into their educational programs); traditional Greek dances are now regarded as a cherished form of educational material, and there is an intention to teach all interested pupils to dance, while also acquiring knowledge with regard to the origin, history and function of these dances. -

Over the course of his lifetime, Crum amassed thousands of European folk music records. The UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive received part of Dick Crum's personal phonograph collection in 2007. This collection consists of more than 1,300 commercially-produced phonograph recordings (LPs, 78s, 45s) primarily from Eastern Europe. Many of these albums are no longer in print, or, are difficult to purchase. Texas Camp Syllabi Master Index This Texas Camp Index lists over 1400 dances published in Texas Camp syllabi from 1954 through 2011 (except 1955 and 1957). Some background material and songs are also indexed. This index was compiled by Sally Jenkins from Tulsa and Chuck Roth from Austin. Not all dances listed were actually taught at Texas Camp. In a number of the syllabi, the pages were not numbered, so we manually numbered our copies for purposes of indexing. Our numbering might not correspond to your numbering. Explanation of columns in the index: The dance names in the TITLE column are listed alphabetically, except in many cases articles (The, A, La, etc.) have been moved to the end of the name. So if you don’t find it under The Bishop or La Belle Katherine, look under Bishop, The or Belle Katherine, La. In most cases, the dance name is given and not the name of the tune to which it is danced. In the FORMation column, abbreviations are used as follows: cir = circle, no partners (usually a closed circle) cpl = couple cpl-mix = couple mixer set = a couple dance done in a set where couples interact with each other set2, set3, set4, etc. = set of 2, 3, 4, etc. couples setL = longways set with number of couples unspecified 3s = (threes) a trio dance 3s-mix = a trio dance that is a mixer ind = individual (usually a group of dancers scattered around the floor) Some of the dances may be done in more than one formation, and this is sometimes indicated in the notes. -

Köroğlu Destanı’nda Simgesel Değerler Ebru Şenocak* Özet Köroğlu Destanı, bütün Türk Dünyasında ve Türklere komşu olan Gürcü, Ermeni ve Tacikler arasında bilinen geniş bir coğrafyaya yayılmış anlatmaya dayalı bir türdür. Biz bu çalışmamızda Kazakistan, Özbekistan, Azerbaycan, Türkmenistan, Anadolu vb. gibi kaynaklardaki Köroğlu varyantlarından hareketle değerlendirmeler yapacağız. Amacımız, Köroğlu’nun doğumundan sır oluşuna kadar ki bireyleşme süreci içerisinde karşılaştığı belli simgesel değerleri (anne karnı, mezar, saz, türkü, at, kılıç, delikli demir vb. gibi) tahlil ederek Köroğlu’nun kimliğini, okuyucuya mesajlarını, örnek kişiliğini ve değer yargılarını tespit etmektir. Ayrıca simgesel değerlerin ağırlıklı olarak işlendiği eserde, içerik düzleminin zenginliği belirlenerek Türk ruhunun ve geleneklerinin yaşatılışı, Türk insanının hayata bakışı, insanı algılama biçimi ve değerlere verdiği önemi Köroğlu’nun tinsel dönüşüm aynasından yansıtılarak izlenecektir. In fluent greek his first words to me, were about his unfinished project of a directory of libraries in Greece which have resources for music research for Volume Five of the International Directory of Music Research Libraries. When he asked me to join and help him finish the project I readily agreed. Soon after I found myself travelling around Greece, with or without Neil, visiting monasteries, Schools and Libraries, trying to find music material of special value, for the Directory. When Neil passed away in 1994, 154 entries were incuded in the Directory. Now that the work is completed, the list numbers more than 240 entries. Neil Ratliff studied Library Science, piano and harpsichord, voice and musicology. -
