Why Stockton Folk Dance Camp Still Produces a Syllabus
Syllabus of Dance Descriptions STOCKTON FOLK DANCE CAMP – 2018 FINAL In Memoriam Rickey Holden – 1926-2017 Rickey was a square and folk dance teacher, researcher, caller, record producer, and author. Rickey was largely responsible for spreading recreational international folk dancing throughout Europe and Asia. Rickey learned ballroom dance in Austin Texas in 1935 and 1936. He started square and contra dancing in Vermont in 1939. He taught international folk dance all over Europe and Asia, eventually making his home base in Brussels. He worked with Folkraft Records in the early years. He taught at Stockton Folk Dance Camp in the 1940s and 50s, plus an additional appearance in 1992. In addition to dozens of books about square dancing, he also authored books on Israeli, Turkish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Greek, and Macedonian dance. STOCKTON FOLK DANCE CAMP – 2018 FINAL Preface Many of the dance descriptions in the syllabus have been or are being copyrighted. They should not be reproduced in any form without permission. EKOD / 2018 (12): 33-49 TRADITIONAL FORMS AND GENRES OF TURKISH MUSIC IN THE CREATIONS OF INTERNATIONAL ART MUSIC COMPOSERS OF * TURKEY Türk Uluslararası Sanat Müziği Bestecilerinin Eserlerinde Türk Müziğinin Geleneksel Türleri ve Biçimleri Özge USTA** ABSTRACT 19th century was an era of nationalist movements in music. Nationalism was seen in important regions of the world, especially in Russia and Northern Europe. These nationalistic movements affected international art music composers of Turkey in the early years of Turkish Republic. Generally Turkish composers preferred to use traditional folk music elements instead of the elements of traditional art music. Either folk music with its melodic characteristic or maqam structure of art music is used by many international Turkish composers after the Turkish Fives. Generally, maqam factors are used as building stones in the compositions. The genre has been the less mentioned subject than maqam regarding the reflection of tradition. Besides, it is seen that the forms and genres of folk music are used in international art music. Here I present the composers’ preferences regarding Turkish music genres with notation samples. A dance happening that took place before the lining of the boundaries to date in the Greek and Turkish Thrace is that of “K’na”. “K’na” is a female dance happening which is danced to date by the people of both areas in spite of their religious beliefs, social – economic and cultural development. The purpose of this project is to study the different expressions of this dance in Nea Vyssa and examine if these are related to matters of search and conformation of ethnic and national identity of this group under the terms of the social cybernetics.
